Risk Factors Associated with Birth Asphyxia in Rural District Matiari, Pakistan: A Case Control Study

Background: During the past two decades there has been a sustained decline in child mortality;however, neonatal mortality has remained stagnant. Each year approximately 4 million babies are born asphyxiated resulting in 2 million neonatal deaths and intrapartum stillbirths. Almost all neonatal deaths occur in developing countries, where the majority is delivered at homes with negligible antenatal care and poor perinatal services. Objectives: To identify socio-demographic and clinical risk factors associated with birth asphyxia in Matiari District of Sindh Province, Pakistan. Method: A matched case control study was conducted in Matiari District with 246 cases and 492 controls. Newborn deaths with birth asphyxia diagnosed through verbal autopsy accreditation during 2005 and 2006 were taken as cases. Controls were the live births during the same period, matched on area of residence, gender and age. Result: The factors found to be associated with birth asphyxia mortality in Matiari District of Sindh Province, Pakistan are maternal education, history of stillbirths, pregnancy complications (including smelly or excessive vaginal discharge and anemia), intrapartum complications (including fever, prolong or difficult labour, breech delivery, cord around child’s neck, premature delivery, large baby size) and failure to establish spontaneous respiration after birth. Conclusion and Recommendation: There is an immediate need to develop strategies for early identification and management of factors associated with birth asphyxia by involving women, families, communities, community health workers, health professionals and policy makers. Community health workers should be trained for emergency obstetric care, basic newborn care including preliminary resuscitation measures to provide skilled birth attendance and encourage early recognition and referral.

A Study of Prevalence and Pathogenic Activity of Bacteria in the Air of Dhaka City and Their Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern

Bangladesh composes the most polluted air with Dhaka securing the top position. The purpose of the study is the enumeration of the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in Dhaka city’s air and their antibiotic susceptibility to the common antibiotics. For the sample collection, different selective media was exposed in air where the highest and lowest CFU was 137 and 1 respectively. Pathogens were screened through Hemolysis, DNase and Coagulase test and identified by 16s rRNA sequencing followed by antibiotic susceptibility test. 16s rRNA sequencing revealed that the organisms were Bacillus altitudinis strain 41KF2bT.28, Bacillus licheniformis strain QMA46-2, Bacillus altitudinis, Bacillus pumilis strain BJ-DEBCR-34, Staphylococcus aureus strain TPS3156, Bacillus sp CO16, Pseudomonas sp strain 96LC22 and Shigella dysenteriae strain ATCC 13313. Shigella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus were 81.81% and 54.54% resistant to the antibiotics. Whole-genome sequencing would help to observe mutations in the traits as changes in hemolytic activity were found during pathogenecity tests.

Risk assessment of alcohol and obesity on liver enzymes (transaminases, cholestatic)

Background: This study was designed to investigate the BMI and alcohol consumption effects on hepatic enzymes. The degree of alteration among moderate drinkers is still unclear. Objective: To determine causes of liver failure due to alcohol and obesity. We observed the association between moderate alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI;in kg/m2) and transaminase, cholestatic enzymes. Design: Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphate (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT) were examined in 995 healthy persons. In this study 400 persons were reported as abstainers and 595 participants involved as a moderate drinkers. The study population was further split into according to BMI as follows: <19 (underweight), ≥19 and <25 (normal weight), ≥25 and <30 (over- weight), and ≥30 (obese). Results: Serum ALT (P < 0.002), GGT (P < 0.001) and ALP (P < 0.001) but not AST (P < 0.883) activities in moderate drinkers were higher than those in abstainers. Mean ALT activity is higher in obese and over weight in alcohol consumers and abstainers as compared to mean AST activity in the same groups. ALP activity was increased with BMI in moderate drinkers. In abstainers activity of ALP shows weak relation in order to BMI. Conclusion: The result of moderate alcohol use raises activity of hepatic enzymes with increasing BMI. Most participants with alcohol consumption have an AST/ALT ratio above 1.

Recognition of Bangla Handwritten Number Using Combination of PCA and FIS with the Aid of DWT

The structure of any Bangla numerical character is more complex compared to English numerical character. Two pairs of numerical character in Bangla resembles to be closed and they are: “one and nine” and “five and six”. We found that, handwritten Bangla numerical character cannot be recognized using single machine learning algorithm or discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Above phenomenon motivated us to use combination of DWT, Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to recognize numerical characters of Bangla in handwritten format. The four lowest spectral components of a preprocessed image are taken using DWT, which is considered as the feature vector to recognize the digits in first phase. The feature vector is then applied to FIS and PCA separately. The combined method provides recognition accuracy of 95.8% whereas application of individual method gives less rate of accuracy. Instead of storing the images itself in a folder, if we can store the feature vector of images achieved from DWT in tabular form. The records of table can be applied in FIS, PCA or other object detection algorithm. Although the technique used in the paper can detect objects with moderate rate of accuracy but can save huge storage against a benchmark database of images. If a tradeoff is made between storage requirements and accuracy of recognition, the model of the paper is preferable compared to other present state-of-art. Another finding of the paper is that, the spectral components of images acquired by DWT only matched with FIS and PCA for classification but do not match properly with unsupervised (K-mean clustering) and supervised (support vector machine) learning.

Application of Box-Behnken Design for Optimization of Different Pretreatment Conditions for Cellulase Production

Effects of dilute acid and acid steam pretreatments were inspected for cellulose production of Eucalyptus leaves through Box-Behenken design, a three variable factors for response surface methodology by Bacillus subtilus K-18. Maximum cellulose production performed in 250 mL erlenmeyer flask with submerged fermentation attained at 50＂C, pH 5, 140 r· min-1 for 24 h. Results showed the efficient cellulose production from acid steam pretreatrnent （being autoclaved at 15 Psi for 15 rain） than acid pretreatment. The optimum condition for maximum carboxymethyl cellulas （CMCase） was 1.811 IU·mL-1·min-1 （0.8% acid cone., 10 g biomass loading, 6 h reaction time） and filter paper activity （FPase） was 2.255 IU·mL·-1·min-1 （1% acid conc., 10 g biomass loading, 8 h reaction time）. Whereas, the acid steam maximum CMCase activity recorded was 2.585 IU·mL-1·min-1 （0.8% acid cone., 15 g substrate loading and 8 h reaction time） and the highest FPase activity was 2.055 IU·mL-1·min-1 （0.8% cone., 10 g biomass, 6 h reaction time then autoclaved）. Results revealed that acid pretreated Eucalyptus leaves were better lignocellulosic biomass for cellulose production by submerged fermentation.

Polyaniline stannic molybdate—an organic-inorganic composite material, was prepared via sol-gel mixing of organic polymer polyaniline into matrices of inorganic precipitate of stannicmolybdate. The composite material synthesized at pH 1.2 showed an ion exchange capacity 1.8 meq/g for Na+?ions. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration and distribution studies were carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The distribution studies showed the selectivity of Hg(II) ions by this material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures had been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant media.

Microbial Agents Responsible for Diarrheal Infections in Flood Victims: A Study from Karachi, Pakistan

The present study was aimed to determine the frequency of water borne diarrheal infections and gastroenteritis in two of the flood affected camps of Karachi and nearby areas. Each year approximately, 579,732 people are adversely affected by this phenomenon, putting Pakistan 9th in terms of flood-affected countries worldwide. Patients and Methods: All patients suffering from diarrhea (more than 3 stools per day for the last 2 days), abdominal pain, vomiting or fever who were residing in the camps were included in the study. After taking consent, a fresh stool sample for D/R and C/S, and 5 ml of venous blood sample for CP and ALT and other viral markers were collected from each patient suffering from any of the symptoms like jaundice, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain during past 2-3 days. Direct microscopy of the stools was done to see any protozoal or bacterial infection. Culture of stool was also set up simultaneously. Hemoglobin % age was noted for each patient. Serology of Hepatitis E and A virus using ELISA (Anti HEV-IgM, and anti HAV IgM) was done in those with more than 2 times raised ALT level. Results: A total of 500 samples collected from refugee camps of flood affected areas near Karachi were included in this study. All patients were mal nourished, having below normal Hb% ages, and were suspected cases or patients of diarrhea with elevated ALT (Alanine Transaminase) values. Occult blood was found positive in 40% (200) specimens;protozoa were also seen i.e., trophozoit stage of Giardia lamblia in 45% (225) of specimens;Entamoeba coli in 95% (475) and Balantidium coli in 20% (100) of stool specimens, while cyst forms of Entamoeba histolytica were present in 35% (175) specimens. Bacteriological analysis showed high bacterial prevalence of E. coli with 63% (315), followed by Enterobacter specie with 55% (275), then 20% (100) and 12% (60) of Klebseilla oxytoca and Klebseilla pneumoniae respectively. Studies on Biomass Yield, Morphological Characteristics and Nutritive Quality of Napier Cultivars under Two Different Geo-Topographic Conditions of Bangladesh

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of Napier cultivars in terms of forage yield, plant morphology and nutrient contents under two different agro-ecology and geo-topographic conditions. Three Napier cultivars being conserved by Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), namely-BLRI-Napier 1, (BN-1), BLRI-Napier 3 (BN-3) and Merkeron (BN-5) were selected to cultivate in severe drought prone areas (called Barind) and non-drought area at Savar (Modhupur terrace). Stem cuttings were planted in rows apart from 70 cm and 35cm spacing between plants. Data of 6 consecutive harvests from a period of approximately one year were collected and analyzed statistically by “R” software. The results showed that cultivar and location had a significant (P were significantly varied with locations. BN-3 yielded the highest biomass (33.32 t/ha/harvest) at non-drought location (42.98 t/ha/harvest). The highest plant height was obtained in BN-1 (171.2 cm) at non-drought location (174.6 cm). Number of tillers per hill ranged from 25.4 to 26.3 among cultivars (P > 0.05) and the highest tillers were found at non-drought location (28.1 no). The best LSR was estimated from BN-5 (0.86) at drought location (0.95). The proximate analysis showed that CP, ADF and NDF in whole plant were varied significantly (P < 0.001), being the highest contents in BN-1 (10.69%, 46.20% and 54.58

Assemble of Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Based on Locally Available Natural Dye

Due to the availability, non-toxicity and cost-effectivity, natural dyes are becoming popular day by day. This study explains the fabrication method of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using natural dyes containing anthocyanins extracted from pomegranate, blackberry and beetroot. Doctor blade method was employed to prepare TiO2 film as photoanode on FTO glass. The structural and morphological properties of photoanode was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. The extracted dye absorption was evaluated by UVVis- NIR spectroscopy. The fabricated cells have efficiency in the range of 0.015-0.042% which has been measured by sun simulator.
