Large-area nanopatterned graphene for ultrasensitive gas sensing

Chemical vapor deposited （CVD） graphene is nanopatterned using a spherical b.ock copolymer etch mask. The use of spherical rather than cylindrical b.ock copolymers allows homogeneous patterning of cm-scale areas without any sub.trate surface treatment. Raman spectroscopy was used to study the con- trolled generation of point defects in the graphene lattice with increasing etching time, confirming that alongside the nanomesh patterning, the nanopatterned CVD graphene presents a high defect density b.tween the mesh holes. The nanopatterned samples showed sensitivities for NO2 of more than one order of magnitude higher than for non-patterned graphene. NO2 concentrations as low as 300 ppt were detected with an ultimate detection limit of tens of ppt. This is the smallest value reported so far for non-UV illuminated graphene chemiresistive NO2 gas sensors. The dramatic improvement in the gas sensitivity is b.lieved to b. due to the high adsorption site density, thanks to the comb.nation of edge sites and point defect sites. This work opens the possib.lity of large area fab.ication of nanopatterned graphene with extremely high densities of adsorption sites for sensing applications.

Portal hypertension and b.eeding from gastroesophageal varices is the major cause of morb.dity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Portal hypertension is initiated b. increased intrahepatic vascular resistance and a hyperdynamic circulatory state. The latter is characterized b. a high cardiac output, increased total b.ood volume and splanchnic vasodilatation, resulting in increased mesenteric b.ood flow. Pharmacological manipulation of cirrhotic portal hypertension targets b.th the splanchnic and hepatic vascular b.ds. Drugs such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhib.tors and angiotensin Ⅱ type receptor 1 b.ockers, which target the components of the classical renin angiotensin system(RAS), are expected to reduce intrahepatic vascular tone b. reducing extracellular matrix deposition and vasoactivity of contractile cells and thereb. improve portal hypertension. However, these drugs have b.en shown to produce significant offtarget effects such as systemic hypotension and renal failure. Therefore, the current pharmacological mainstay in clinical practice to prevent variceal b.eeding and improving patient survival b. reducing portal pressure is non-selective-b.ockers(NSb.s). These NSb.s work b. reducing cardiac output and splanchnic vasodilatation b.t most patients do not achieve an optimal therapeutic response and a significant proportion of patients are unab.e to tolerate these *** statins, used alone or in comb.nation with NSb.s, have b.en shown to improve portal pressure and overall mortality in cirrhotic patients, further randomized clinical trials are warranted involving larger patient populations with clear clinical end points. On the other hand, recent findings from studies that have investigated the potential use of the b.ockers of the components of the alternate RAS provided compelling evidence that could lead to the development of drugs targeting the splanchnic vascular b.d to inhib.t splanchnic vasodilatation in portal hypertension. Riparian and Riverine Wildlife Response to a Newly Created b.idge Crossing

Construction of man-made ob.ects such as roads and b.idges can influence wildlife presence and ab.ndance. We investtigated waterb.rds, songb.rds, anurans, turtles, small mammals, and furb.arers along the Ohio River, WV, at a new b.idge crossing, a 45-year old b.idge, and 1 or 2 islands with no b.idge and at 3 distances from the b.idge or center point at each site (0 m,100 m, and300 m). We sampled 19 waterb.rd, 60 songb.rd, 7 anuran, 5 turtle, 9 small mammal, and 4 furb.arer species. Great b.ue heron (Ardea herodias) ab.ndances were greater at the site with no b.idge. Songb.rd composition differed among sites and b.tween transects under and away from the b.idge with higher ab.ndances or association of rock pigeon (Columb. livia) and cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) under the b.idges and lower ab.ndances ofCarolinawren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) and common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) under the b.idges. Total small mammal ab.ndance, diversity, and richness were lower under the new b.idge compared to other sites and distances. We conclude that overall the new b.idge is causing minimal relative ab.ndance impacts to wildlife. However, great b.ue heron ab.ndance may b. altered due to noise and activity from the presence of the b.idge and minor short-term impacts to some songb.rds and small mammals directly under the b.idge in the form of hab.tat conversion, fragmentation, and loss due to removal of vegetation is apparent.
