Oil-in-water nanoemulsions loaded with lycopene extracts encapsulated by spray drying:Formulation,characterization and optimization

This paper addresses the planning problem of parallel DC electric springs (DCESs). DCES, a demand-side management method, realizes automatic matching of power consumption and power generation by adjusting non-critical load (NCL) and internal storage. It can offer higher power quality to critical load (CL), reduce power imbalance and relieve pressure on energy storage systems (RESs). In this paper, a planning method for parallel DCESs is proposed to maximize stability gain, economic benefits, and penetration of RESs. The planning model is a master optimization with sub-optimization to highlight the priority of objectives. Master optimization is used to improve stability of the network, and sub-optimization aims to improve economic benefit and allowable penetration of RESs. This issue is a multivariable nonlinear mixed integer problem, requiring huge calculations by using common solvers. Therefore, particle Swarm optimization (PSO) and Elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) were used to solve this model. Considering uncertainty of RESs, this paper verifies effectiveness of the proposed planning method on IEEE 33-bus system based on deterministic scenarios obtained by scenario analysis.

In this study, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of Spartium junceum L. aromatic water (SJAW), obtained by vacuum process distillation, were investigated. Antimicrobial activity of SJAW was evaluated against fungal organisms, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using agar-well diffusion method. Moreover, the ability of SJAW to sensitize Staphyloccus aureus to antibiotics was also evaluated. The antioxidant activity was examined by 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity assay and the cytotoxic activity of SJAW main components was tested on melanoma RPMI 7932 and normal keratinocytes NCTC 2544 cell lines using the trypan blue method. The preparation did not show antibacterial activity against tested microorganisms and was unable, at tested concentrations/conditions, to sensitize Staphylococcus aureus to antibiotics clindamycin (2 μg) and tetracycline (30 μg). On the contrary SJAW possesses an appreciable antioxidant and cytotoxic activity suggesting its potential use for pharmaceutical applications.

The intermittent nature of renewable resources requires for most applications the development of efficient and cost-effective technologies for steady supply of electrical *** storage of energy in the form of hydrogen chemically bound within organic molecules(rather than physically as compressed gas or cooled liquid)represents an alternative approach that is attracting great research *** to other liquid organic hydrogen carriers(LOHCs),dimethyl ether(DME)appears to have the largest potential impact on society,especially if inserted in technological chains of CO_(2) sequestration and utilization,so to determine an effective mitigation of environmental issues,without any net effect on the carbon ***,the steps of H2 storage and H2 release can take place in two coupled chemical processes,constituted by the exothermic synthesis of DME via CO_(2) hydrogenation and the endothermic steam reforming of DME,***,the latest advances in the development of heterogeneous bifunctional and hybrid catalysts for the direct hydrogenation of CO_(2) to DME are thoroughly reviewed,with special emphasis on thermodynamics,catalyst design and process *** many aspects behind the mechanism of DME synthesis from H2-CO_(2) streams are still to be uncovered,the recent progress in the research on H2 release by DME steam reforming is increasing the interest for effectively closing this binary H2 loop,in view of future green deals and sustainable research developments.

Several andrological diseases require surgical repair or reconstruction of tunica albuginea, which envelops the corpora cavernosa penis. Despite intense research efforts involving a variety of biological materials, such as skin, muscle aponeurosis, human dura mater, tunica vaginalis, and pericardium, engineered tunica albuginea suitable for graft use is yet to be obtained. The study investigates microsurgical tunica albuginea allotransplantation in an animal model with the purpose of creation of an organ-specific tissue bank to store penile tissue, from cadaveric donors and male-to-female trans-sexual surgery, for allogeneic transplantation. Materials were tunica albuginea tissue explanted from 15 donor rats, cryopreserved at -80~C, gamma-irradiated, and implanted in 15 recipient rats, of which three rats were used as controls. Penile grafts were explanted at different time intervals; after macroscopic evaluation of the organ, the grafts were processed to morphological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical examinations by light microscopy. Detection of pro-inflammatory cytokines was also performed. Examination of the tunica albuginea allografts collected 1, 3, or 6 months after surgery and of control tunica albuginea fragments showed that tunica albuginea implants achieved biointegration with adjacent tissue at all-time points. The integration of cryopreserved rat tunica albuginea allografts, documented by our study, encourages the exploration of tunica albuginea allotransplantation in humans. In conclusion, the effectiveness and reliability of the tunica albuginea conditioning protocol described here suggest the feasibility of setting up a tunica albuginea bank as a further tissue bank.

Portal hypertension,liver fibrosis,and angiosarcoma of the liver(ASL)have been reported among workers exposed to vinyl chloride monomer(VCM)since the *** 2007,the International Agency for Research on Cancer established the association of VCM with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),though only on the basis of the few cases ***,recent reports from the United States cohort and a European sub-cohort of vinyl chloride workers provided compelling evidence of a strong association between cumulative VCM exposure and HCC *** areas of research include the risk of liver cancer at lower levels of exposure and different patterns of risk of ASL and HCC with the time since *** evidence of interaction between VCM exposure and other known liver carcinogens such as alcohol and chronic viral infection provides clues for the health surveillance of exposed ***,also the risk of VCM-associated chronic liver disease is modulated by alcohol consumption,viral infection,and genetic polymorphism.A counter-intuitive finding from cohort studies of exposed workers is the lower mortality from liver cirrhosis with respect to the general population;this can be attributed to the healthy worker effect and to the selection of liver cancer as the cause of death in the presence of concomitant chronic liver *** designed to overcome these intricacies confirmed an association between cumulative VCM exposure and the risk of liver cirrhosis.

The purpose of the present review is to summarise the current knowledge on the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the interferon L3 (IFNL3) gene and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in children. Many studies in adults have demonstrated that genetic variation in IFNL3 is a strong predictor of the virological response in treatment-naive patients with HCV genotype 1 who were treated with Pegylated-IFN-α and ribavirin. Genetic variation in IFNL3 is also associated with the spontaneous clearance of HCV. Thus far, few paediatric studies have explored the association between variations in the IFNL3 gene and either spontaneous or treatment-induced clearance of HCV. The CC genotype of the rs12979860 SNP is associated with the spontaneous clearance of HCV in children independently of HCV genotype. Four paediatric studies have shown that both the CC genotype of the rs12979860 SNP and the TT genotype of the rs8099917 SNP are associated with the treatment-induced (IFN monotherapy and Pegylated-IFN-α and ribavirin association) clearance of HCV, while the rs12980275 SNP did not affect the virological response. The possible role of IFNL3 gene variation as a pre-treatment and on-treatment predictor of virological response in children is highly attractive but still undetermined. Further paediatric studies are needed to evaluate if testing for SNPs in IFNL3, either alone or together with other predictors of response to treatment, could be used to direct treatment strategies, including an avoidance of unnecessary protease inhibitor therapy and the duration of treatment.

Metastatic tumors to the pancreas: The role of surgery

Pancreatic metastases from other primary malignancies are a rare entity. By far, the most common primary cancer site resulting in an isolated pancreatic metastasis is the kidney, followed by colorectal cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, lung carcinoma and sarcoma. Only few data on the surgical outcome of pancreatic resections performed for metastases from other primary tumor have been published, and there are no guidelines to address the surgical treatment for these patients. In this study, we performed a review of the published literature, focusing on the early and long-term results of surgery for the most frequent primary tumors metastasizing to the pancreas. Results for the Literature's analysis show that in last years an increasing number of surgical resections have been performed in selected patients with limited pancreatic disease. Pancreatic resection for metastatic disease can be performed with acceptable mortality and morbidity rates. The usefulness of pancreatic resection is mainly linked to the biology of the primary tumor metastasizing to the pancreas. The benefit of metastasectomy in terms of patient survival has been observed for metastases from renal cell cancer, while for other primary tumors, such as lung and breast cancers, the role of surgery is mainly palliative.
