Advances in science and technology, especially in bioprospecting and biomimetics, have provided solutions to everyday problems over time. Through bioengineering, research and the discovery of the mechanisms present in nature for the production and functionality of adhesives, different materials and substances capable of imitating the role of their analogs in nature have been developed, which generates positive consequences in the area of the medical, textile, wood industry, among others. In this review, we present some researches and discoveries that have been made, which focus on the way in which adhesives produced by organisms found in nature are made, such as: marine organisms, plants, land organisms, insects, among others. In addition, different types of adhesives that exist and how they can be produced synthetically to be oriented to several industrial applications are mentioned, too.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world,with radiotherapy as one of the treatment *** planning starts with delineating the affected area from healthy organs,called organs at risk(OAR).A new approach to automatic OAR seg-mentation in the chest cavity in Computed Tomography(CT)images is *** proposed approach is based on the modified U‐Net architecture with the ResNet‐34 encoder,which is the baseline adopted in this *** new two‐branch CS‐SA U‐Net architecture is proposed,which consists of two parallel U‐Net models in which self‐attention blocks with cosine similarity as query‐key similarity function(CS‐SA)blocks are inserted between the encoder and decoder,which enabled the use of con-sistency *** proposed solution demonstrates state‐of‐the‐art performance for the problem of OAR segmentation in CT images on the publicly available SegTHOR benchmark dataset in terms of a Dice coefficient(oesophagus-0.8714,heart-0.9516,trachea-0.9286,aorta-0.9510)and Hausdorff distance(oesophagus-0.2541,heart-0.1514,trachea-0.1722,aorta-0.1114)and significantly outperforms the *** current approach is demonstrated to be viable for improving the quality of OAR segmentation for radiotherapy planning.

Background Araucaria araucana is a mast species that presents a high variability in annual cone production. Researchers have recorded synchronization events in cone production in different populations, which allows the seed production to be concentrated, reducing the percentage of seeds consumed by different animal *** We sampled three populations located in the Andes Mountains, Araucanía Region, Chile. In 2004 we began the collection of data on cone production, for which we installed permanent plots（1200 m2each） at each location. We identified and labeled each female tree in each plot to monitor its cone production. In 2012 we selected a total of 30 trees near the plots to evaluate the number of seeds per cone. In each February from 2012 to 2014 we selected two mature cones and covered them with a porous mesh for subsequent collection and storage in March. At the beginning of June, we counted and weighed the seeds, determining the average weight, the number of seeds per cone, the germination capacity（GC）, and the germination speed（GS）.Results Cone production was synchronous across the three locations. We observed significant differences among the locations and years evaluated. The cones had fewer seeds in 2013（high production） compared to those in 2012（low production）, but their weights were similar. In 2014 the cones produced smaller seeds in fewer quantities. The difference between the years 2013 and 2014 resulted from the high-energy expenditure in 2013. Regarding GC and GS, there were significant differences among the three locations（GC: F = 45.41, p < 0.01; GS: F = 96.08, p < 0.01）, where the highest values were observed in *** Both GC and GS are related to seed weight but not to the number of cones produced in a given year. The extension of dual-comb spectroscopy(DCS)to all wavelengths of light along with its ability to provide ultralarge dynamic range and ultra-high spectral resolution,renders it extremely useful for a diverse array of applications in physics,chemistry,atmospheric science,space science,as well as medical *** this work,we report on an innovative technique of quartz-enhanced multiheterodyne resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy(QEMR-PAS),in which the beat frequency response from a dual comb is frequency down-converted into the audio frequency *** this way,gas molecules act as an optical-acoustic converter through the photoacoustic effect,generating heterodyne sound *** conventional DCS,where the light wave is detected by a wavelengthdependent photoreceiver,QEMR-PAS employs a quartz tuning fork(QTF)as a high-Q sound transducer and works in conjunction with a phase-sensitive detector to extract the resonant sound component from the multiple heterodyne acoustic tones,resulting in a straightforward and low-cost hardware *** novel QEMRPAS technique enables wavelength-independent DCS detection for gas sensing,providing an unprecedented dynamic range of 63 dB,a remarkable spectral resolution of 43 MHz(or~0.3 pm),and a prominent noise equivalent absorption of 5.99×10^(-6)cm^(-1)·Hz-1/2.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy(PAS)as a highly sensitive and selective trace gas detection technique has extremely broad application in many ***,the laser sources currently used in PAS limit the sensing *** to diode laser and quantum cascade laser,the solid-state laser has the merits of high optical power,excellent beam quality,and wide tuning *** we present a long-wave,high-power,wide-tunable,singlelongitudinal-mode solid-state laser used as light source in a PAS sensor for trace gas *** self-built solid-state laser had an emission wavelength of~2μm with Tm:YAP crystal as the gain material,with an excellent wavelength and optical power stability as well as a high beam *** wide wavelength tuning range of 9.44 nm covers the absorption spectra of water and ammonia,with a maximum optical power of~130 mW,allowing dual gas detection with a single laser *** solid-state laser was used as light source in three different photoacoustic detection techniques:standard PAS with microphone,and external-and intra-cavity quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy(QEPAS),proving that solid-state laser is an attractive excitation source in photoacoustic spectroscopy.

Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion mutation of a cytosine-adenine-guanine triplet in the exon 1 of the HTT gene which is responsible for the production of the huntingtin (Htt) protein. In physiological conditions, Htt is involved in many cellular processes such as cell signaling, transcriptional regulation, energy metabolism regulation, DNA maintenance, axonal trafficking, and antiapoptotic activity. When the genetic alteration is present, the production of a mutant version of Htt (mHtt) occurs, which is characterized by a plethora of pathogenic activities that, finally, lead to cell death. Among all the cells in which mHtt exerts its dangerous activity, the GABAergic Medium Spiny Neurons seem to be the most affected by the mHtt-induced excitotoxicity both in the cortex and in the striatum. However, as the neurodegeneration proceeds ahead the neuronal loss grows also in other brain areas such as the cerebellum, hypothalamus, thalamus, subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus, and substantia nigra, determining the variety of symptoms that characterize Huntington’s disease. From a clinical point of view, Huntington’s disease is characterized by a wide spectrum of symptoms spanning from motor impairment to cognitive disorders and dementia. Huntington’s disease shows a prevalence of around 3.92 cases every 100,000 worldwide and an incidence of 0.48 new cases every 100,000/year. To date, there is no available cure for Huntington’s disease. Several treatments have been developed so far, aiming to reduce the severity of one or more symptoms to slow down the inexorable decline caused by the disease. In this context, the search for reliable strategies to target the different aspects of Huntington’s disease become of the utmost interest.
