A flexible protruding microelectrode array for neural interfacing in bioelectronic medicine

Recording neural signals from delicate autonomic nerves is a challenging task that requires the development of a lowinvasive neural interface with highly selective,micrometer-sized *** paper reports on the development of a three-dimensional(3D)protruding thin-film microelectrode array(MEA),which is intended to be used for recording low-amplitude neural signals from pelvic nervous structures by penetrating the nerves transversely to reduce the distance to the *** gold pillars(O 20 or 50μm,~60μm height)were fabricated on a micromachined polyimide substrate in an electroplating *** sidewalls were insulated with parylene C,and their tips were optionally modified by wet etching and/or the application of a titanium nitride(TiN)*** microelectrodes modified by these combined techniques exhibited low impedances(~7 kΩ at 1 kHz for ∅ 50μm microelectrode with the exposed surface area of~5000μm^(2))and low intrinsic noise *** functionalities were evaluated in an ex vivo pilot study with mouse retinae,in which spontaneous neuronal spikes were recorded with amplitudes of up to 66μ*** novel process strategy for fabricating flexible,3D neural interfaces with low-impedance microelectrodes has the potential to selectively record neural signals from not only delicate structures such as retinal cells but also autonomic nerves with improved signal quality to study neural circuits and develop stimulation strategies in bioelectronic medicine,e.g.,for the control of vital digestive functions.

Can a science-based definition of acupuncture improve clinical outcomes？

Research on acupuncture has been muddled by attempts to bridge the ancient with the modern. Barriers to effectiveness research are reflected in recurring conflicts that include disagreement on use of the most basic terms, lack of standard intervention controls, and the absence of functional measures for assessing treatment effect. Acupuncture research has stalled at the ＂placebo barrier＇ wherein acupuncture is ＂no better than placebo.＂ The most widely recognized comparative effectiveness research in acupuncture does not compare acupuncture treatment protocols within groups, thereby, mutating large scale effectiveness studies into large scale efficacy trials. Too often research in acupuncture attempts to tie outcomes to traditional belief systems thereby limiting usefulness of the research. The acupuncture research paradigm needs to focus more closely on a scientific definition of treatments and outcomes that compare protocols in terms of prevalent clinical issues such as relative effectiveness for treating pain.

Application of shortened heat treatment cycles on A356 automotive brake calipers with respective globular and dendritic microstructures

Since the automotive industry has many possible applications for semi-solid metal (SSM)-high-pressure die casting (HPDC) parts, the newly developed heat treatment cycles, as well as the traditional heat treatment cycles, were applied to A356 brake calipers cast using a LK DCC630 HPDC *** hardness measurements at a cross section of the brake calipers were performed, indicating that similar values can be obtained when using the significantly shorter heat treatment ***, the typical tensile properties that can be obtained for SSM-HPDC A356 brake calipers are compared with those manufactured by gravity die *** indicate that the differences in microstructures (globular or dendritic) do not have a noteworthy effect on the heat treatment *** implies that the short heat treatment cycles originally developed for globular SSM-HPDC A356 castings can be successfully applied to dendritic liquid A356 castings too.

Controlling the structure formation of molecules on surfaces is fundamental for creating molecular nanostructures with tailored properties and functionalities and relies on tuning the subtle balance between intermolecular and molecule-surface *** far,however,reliable rules of design are largely lacking,preventing the controlled fabrication of self-assembled functional structures on *** addition,while so far many studies focused on varying the molecular building blocks,the impact of systematically adjusting the underlying substrate has been less frequently ***,we elucidate the potential of tailoring the mesoscopic island shape by tuning the interactions at the molecular *** a model system,we have selected the molecule dimolybdenum tetraacetate on three prototypical surfaces,Cu(111),Au(111)and CaF2(111).While providing the same hexagonal geometry,compared to Cu(111),the lattice constants of Au(111)and CaF2(111)differ by a factor of 1.1 and 1.5,*** high-resolution scanning probe microscopy images reveal molecular-level information on the resulting islands and elucidate the molecular-level design principles for the observed mesoscopic island *** study demonstrates the capability to tailor the mesoscopic island shape by exclusively tuning the substrate lattice constant,in spite of the very different electronic structure of the substrates *** work provides insights for developing general design strategies for controlling molecular mesostructures on surfaces.

Comparing outcomes from the two most recognized acupuncturist workforce surveys

OBJECTIVE： To determine the informational consistency produced by the two most recent independent surveys and draw a conclusion whether the data would be sufficient for the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis and Bureau of Labor and Statistics consideration. METHODS： This paper compares workforce outcomes collected by the two most prominent acupuncture entities that have produced the most useful acupuncturist workforce data （California Acupuncture Board 2015 Occupational Analysis and the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine^2013 Job Analysis） at national and state levels. RESULTS： Findings based upon the most compatible survey questions showed the following： more than 70% of acupuncturists work fewer than 40 hours weekly; approximately 76% work in solo practice or in shared space with other acupuncturists; more than 70% of the national sample have been in practice 15 years or less; and median income is between $40 000 and $50 000. A preponderance of acupuncturists is less than 50 years of age, and fewer than 15% of all respondents have been in practice more than 20 years. CONCLUSION： Basic workforce information is a necessary precursor for conducting workforce projections. It is useful to track the expansion or contraction of any given profession. Tracking influences subsequent planning for the profession based upon reliable and valid information about its growth. The ability of the profession to collect its own workforce data is paramount to workforce projection models. Any future survey should be a shared project that follows guidelines supported by the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis.

Overproduction of Alkaloid Phytoalexins in California Poppy Cells Is Associated with the Co-Expression of Biosynthetic and Stress-Protective Enzymes

Many plant cells respond to pathogens by the induction of phytoalexin biosynthesis, but the underlying changes of gene expression are often obscured by their close linkage to the complex rearrangements during pathogen defense, especially the hypersensitive cell death. In root-derived cell cultures of Eschscholzia californica, the overproduction of cytotoxic benzophenanthridine alkaloids can be triggered by a minimum of pathogen pressure that does not evoke hypersensitive reactions. Such conditions activate a signal chain that is initiated by a short contact to low concentrations of yeast glycoprotein elicitor and includes a transient acidification of the cytoplasm. In contrast, high elicitor concentrations signal via an increase of jasmonate and trigger hypersensitive cell death, preceded by a drastic decay of translatable mRNAs. The main changes in protein and mRNA patterns caused by either signal path were compared by 2D proteomic separation, MS/MS sequencing and mRNA-in vitro translation. The four proteins showing the highest overexpression were identical between cells that received low or high-elicitor treatment and overlapped with the three proteins most upregulated by artificial pH shifts. They comprised one biosynthetic enzyme （norcoclaurine：SAM 4＇ O-methyl-transferase） plus a unique combination of stress-protective proteins： a heat shock protein （hsp 70）; a peptidyl-prolyl-cis/trans isomerase （cyclophilin）; and a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. It appears that overproduction of the benzophenanthri- dine phytoalexins requires the up-regulation of a rate-limiting biosynthetic enzyme plus the coordinated expression of a specific set of protective enzymes and thus is managed like an oxidative stress.
