Biocultural Diversity of Sarangani Province, Philippines: An Ethno-Ecological Analysis

This paper discussed effects of lowland-associated influences on upland ecology, food security and biocultural diversity in the Sarangani farming communities of the Philippines. In the uplands of Sarangani Province, the conservation of traditional rice varieties, the centrality of rice in tribal life, and the continued observance of planting rituals attest to its cultural significance and convey a common desire for cultural preservation and community solidarity. Economic and socio-political pressures had transformed tribal communities, although vestiges of traditional farming systems are still being practiced in remote sitios（villages）. Changing land use patterns had also resulted in shrinking farm sizes and consequently in food insecurity in the Sarangani uplands. Extractive industries（i.e. logging, mining and charcoal making） and swidden farming were observed to cause widespread environmental degradation, while modern agriculture had undermined the capacity of indigenous peoples to survive because of their complete dependence on lands and resources. With the reality that cultural and biological diversities are inextricably linked, trans-disciplinary strategies coupling indigenous knowledge systems with scientific knowledge should, therefore, be instituted to save the Sarangani upland ecosystem, the indigenous peoples and their tribal resources.

Role of Fluid Management on Renal Failure in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

Introduction: The reported incidence of AKI with COVID-19 varies from 0.5% to 22%. Several mechanisms were postulated as a cause of AKI in patients infected with COVID-19. The appropriate management of AKI in patients with COVID-19 remains unclear at this time. One point of absolute importance, is the consideration of volume status. Given the paucity of knowledge with regards to the role of different strategies for fluid management during an episode of AKI in patients with COVID-19, this retrospective study aims to compare renal outcome and overall prognosis in patients who received conservative versus liberal fluid management. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective observational cohort study at a community hospital in Westchester County, NY. All adult patients who tested positive for the COVID-19 infection by PCR testing of a nasopharyngeal swab and were hospitalized from March 22, 2020 to May 25, 2020 are eligible. Among those identified with AKI, patients were divided into two groups: conservative fluid administration versus liberal fluid administration. Results: Of the 136 patients, 84 (61.76%) were admitted to the ICU, with 60% of patients under the conservative fluid strategy and 40% receiving liberal fluid management. On the other hand, 52 (38.23%) patients were admitted on the medical floors, with more patients (67.31%) receiving liberal fluid management. Discussion: In our cohort of 136 patients with COVID-19 respiratory illness and AKI, there was a significant difference in renal outcome, in terms of improvement of renal function in patients receiving liberal fluid management (55.07%) versus conservative fluid management (16.41%, p ≤ 0.001), with more patients in the liberal group having lower peak creatinine before levels improved. 随着二语教学界愈发重视学习者在现实生活中对二语使用情况,关于“二语交际意愿”的研究广泛地展开起来。本文采取定性与定量相结合的方式对菲律宾籍华裔留学生的课外汉语交际意愿进行调查,并探究其影响因素。研究对象为在中国福建省高校学习汉语的菲律宾籍华裔留学生。本文分为三个部分展开:首先结合文献阅读心得与对研究对象的观察,选取“自我感知交际能力”和“对华群际态度”这两个自变量,与“课外汉语交际意愿”这一个因变量一起搭建考察模式,通过发放问卷的形式,进行定量的调查,并对以上三个变量的调查结果以及背景变量进行定性的分析与讨论。接着,结合长期观察的心得与访谈得到的内容,总结出其他三个影响华裔留学生课外汉语交际意愿的因素。最后结合优秀语言学习者的学习方法与经验,分享了一些提高汉语水平与课外高汉语交际意愿的建议。使用SPSS统计软件对问卷数据进行分析后,得出：1.自变量自我感知交际能力与汉语交际意愿具有显著的强度相关关系。2.群际态度与汉语交际能力具有中度相关关系。留学生整体在“口语”与“理解”模块交际意愿比较高;在“阅读”与“写作模块”的交际意愿比较低。本文的研究成果反映出华裔留学生课堂外交际活动时的真实心理状态和影响因素,也展现了优秀语言学习者身上的积极因素。希望能通过对研究结果的具体运用,启发留学生对课堂外交际的意识、拓展他们的思路,通过不同的途径提高华裔留学生的课外汉语交际意愿,进而提高他们在华适应度、生活满意度以及对华积极情感。

A Comparative Study of Performance Between Operators With Work Discontinuity and Without Work Discontinuity

In situations where discontinuity in operation occurs, specifically in a country where coontractualization has an increasing trend, the performance level of operators after the work break is of great interest. Existing studies have found that the performance of an operator declines after her operation is completely stopped. However, when the operator performed other tasks （may it be similar or not from her previous task） during the work break, the performance after the work break seems to be affected at different level. Contractual and regular operators from a semiconductor and textile company were considered to replicate a discontinuous and continuous operation. The processing times of contractual workers before and after several months of work break were compared. Two types of work break were seen to have significant effect on an operator＇s performance after the work break, Type 1： 0% to 40% similarity from previous task and Type 2： 40% to 97% similarity from previous task. One can find that when 21% of tasks performed during the work break are similar to the operator＇s previous task, there would be no change in her performance upon returning. On the other hand, a 5% decline in performance was observed after work break type 1 and an 8.54% improvement after work break type 2. Also, a remission rate of 18% from end of stint 1 to start of stint 2 under work break type 1 was seen, while 8% for work break type 2. This may also be true to other industries. Thus, further study is suggested.

Determination of Variables That Affect the Remission Rate of Sewing Operations in a Textile Company

In operations management, the learning curve has been an effective tool in estimating operator performance. However, discontinuities in work disrupt the learning process and a phenomenon called remission or forgetting occurs, resulting in increased time of performing the task upon resumption of work. The study aims to identify variables that significantly affect the remission rate of sewing operations in a manufacturing setting. Four variables--length of stint 1, percent Differenceat stint t, gender, and product family, were identified. Statistical analyses, such as paired t-test, correlation, regression, and analysis of variance （ANOVA） were conducted in order to observe the relationships between the dependent variable and independent variables. For the results of the first general regression, gender was found to be an insignificant variable in predicting remission rate, while product family, length of stint 1, and percent Differenceat stint I were statistically significant. Moreover, the final general regression, which excluded the insignificant gender variable and considered the （regrouped） product families, revealed that product family, length of stint 1, and percent Differenceat stint 1 were still statistically significant. Length of stint 1 had a moderately positive correlation with remission rate, while percent Differenceat stint i had a moderately negative correlation with remission rate. Also, percent Differenceat stint 1 was the largest contributor to the remission rate model. In terms of R2, the goodness-of-fit of the model is moderate. Finally, the model yielded an absolute error of 5.08%, indicating a high accuracy in predicting remission rate.

Carbon dioxide insufflation during colonoscopy in deeply sedated patients

AIM:To compare the impact of carbon dioxide(CO2) and air insufflation on patient tolerance/safety in deeply sedated patients undergoing ***:Patients referred for colonoscopy were randomized to receive either CO2 or air insufflation during the *** the colonoscopist and patient were blinded to the type of gas *** the procedure,insertion and withdrawal times,caecal intubationrates,total sedation given and capnography readings were *** level of sedation and magnitude of patient discomfort during the procedure was assessed by a nurse using a visual analogue scale(VAS)(0-3).Patients then graded their level of discomfort and abdominal bloating using a similar *** during and after the procedure were ***:A total of 142 patients were randomized with 72 in the air arm and 70 in the CO2 *** age between the two study groups were *** time to the caecum was quicker in the CO2 group at 7.3 min vs 9.9 min with air(P = 0.0083).The average withdrawal times were not significantly different between the two *** intubation rates were 94.4% and 100% in the air and CO2 groups respectively(P = 0.012).The level of discomfort assessed by the nurse was 0.69(air) and 0.39(CO2)(P = 0.0155) and by the patient 0.82(air) and 0.46(CO2)(P = 0.0228).The level of abdominal bloating was 0.97(air) and 0.36(CO2)(P = 0.001).Capnography readings trended to be higher in the CO2 group at the commencement,caecal intubation,and conclusion of the procedure,even though this was not significantly different when compared to readings obtained during air *** were no complications in both ***:CO2 insufflation during colonoscopy is more efficacious than air,allowing quicker and better cecal intubation *** discomfort and bloating were significantly less with CO2 insufflation.
