Neural correlates of focused attention in cognitively normal older adults

Focused attention (FA) is among the cognitive functions that decline with aging. The Stroop task was used to investigate the neural correlates underlying FA in cognitively normal older adults. Twenty-one participants underwent a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) verbal Stroop task paradigm. Colour words were printed in an incongruent ink colour. Series 1 consisted of four blocks “Read the word” followed by four blocks “Say the colour of the ink”;Series 2 alternated between the two conditions. Functional data were analyzed using SPM5 to detect anatomical areas with significant signal intensity differences between the conditions. Within-group analyses of the “Say the colour of the ink” minus “Read the word” contrast yielded significant activation in the left supplementary motor area, bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral precentral gyrus, left insula and right superior frontal gyrus (p < 0.05, uncorrected). These results, using verbal responses, are consistent with previous manual modality Stroop-fMRI studies in older adults. Verbal responses may provide a more suitable modality for older adults and certain patient populations.

Green and Sustainable Software has emerged as a new and highly active area in the software *** several years of research and work,we believe that it is now necessary to obtain a general snapshot of how the research in this area is *** do so,we have applied the 5 Ws(why,when,who,where,and what),a formula for getting the complete story on a *** have therefore carried out a study,using 542 publications related to Green and Sustainable Software research;these were recovered using *** results obtained allow us to conclude that it is important to identify key elements of the research to allow researchers be fully aware of the state of the research on Green and Sustainable Software(why);the study uses papers published between 2000 and the beginning of November 2018(when);the most prolific authors are mainly from Europe,although the USA is the most active country,Green and Sustainable Software being a very interactive area with a good number of multinational publications(who);the top five keywords related to sustainable aspects are Green Software,Green IT,Software Sustainability,Energy Consumption,and Energy Efficiency(what);finally,as regards the places authors prefer to publish in,there is almost a complete balance between conferences and journals,with a trend towards an increase in the number of publications(where).

To the Editor:We sincerely applaud the work done by Gupta et al.,in which they analyzed a single-center experience regarding gallbladder per-foration(GBP)management[1].Currently,there is a lack of cohort studies to adequately describe the approach strategies and man-agement for this pathology,with international guidelines making ambiguous recommendations[2,3].Their study stratified GBP types and provided details regarding clinical presentation,comorbidities,preoperative diagnosis,etiology,imaging techniques,and surgical *** study reported a high conversion rate when a la-paroscopic approach was attempted for cholecystectomy.

Novel approaches for high contrast, deep tissue, in vivo fluorescence biomedical imaging are based on infrared-emitting nanoparticles working in the so-called second biological window （1,000-1,400 nm）. This allows for the acquisition of high resolution, deep tissue images due to the partial transparency of tissues in this particular spectral range. In addition, the optical excitation with low energy （infrared） photons also leads to a drastic reduction in the contribution of autofluorescence to the in vivo image. Nevertheless, as is demonstrated here, working solely in this biological window does not ensure a complete removal of autofluorescence as the specimens diet shows a remarkable infrared fluorescence that extends up to 1,100 nm. In this work, we show how the 1,340 nm emission band of Nd3. ions embedded in SrF2 nanoparticles can be used to produce autofluorescence free, high contrast in vivo fluorescence images. It is also dem- onstrated that the complete removal of the food-related infrared autofluorescence is imperative for the development of reliable biodistribution studies.

Introduction: It is not known what the minimum duration of training programme is effective in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness in physical fitness and exercise of the training programme of 8 weeks of duration with two modalities (2 or 3 sessions per week) in subjects with moderate-high risk of cardiovascular disease in a primary care setting. Main Findings: A significant increase in the six-minute walk test was observed (from 488 ± 87.4 m to 532 ± 68.0 m, p < 0.0001). A significant increase of exercise duration (from 11.4 ± 3.0 min to 12.3 ± 3.0 min, p < 0.0001) and a delay in the anaerobic threshold (from 8.8 ± 2.9 min to 10.1 ± 2.5 min, p < 0.0001) during the ergometric tests were also observed. The proportion of patients exercising regularly increased significantly (from 36.1% to 83.3%, p < 0.0001). Both modalities of training programme improved fitness and physical activity, without significant differences between them. Conclusion: Our study shows that a structured training programme of two months of duration with 2 or 3 sessions per week significantly improves the fitness and physical activity of patients with moderate-high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Genotoxicity evaluation of two derived products from Allium extracts: s-propylmercaptocysteine and s-propyl mercaptoglutathione

Propyl-propane-thiosulfonate (PTSO) is one of the main organosulfur compounds present in Allium essential oils with a widely documented biological activity. For this reason, it could be used as a food and feed additive in the agri-food industry. A genotoxicity evaluation of substances and their metabolites present in food is necessary to guarantee the consumer's health following the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). To evaluate the toxicological profile of derivatives of PTSO, the cytotoxicity, an Ames test, a micronucleus test and the comet assay were performed. Results showed that non-cytotoxic effects were observed in Caco-2 exposed to s-propyl mercaptocysteine (CSSP) and s-propyl mercaptoglutathione (GSSP) (0-450 mu M). The mutagenicity index remained in the range of 0.6-1.4 for both compounds, showing no mutagenic effects for the concentrations of 5000-312.5 mu g GSSP/plate and 250-15.63 mu g CSSP/plate. Moreover, the % binucleated cells with micronuclei were 1.3-2.2 and 1.6-2.7 for GSSP and GSSP, respectively. For comet assays there was no DNA-genotoxic or oxidative damage in a concentration range of 112.5-450 mu M. Therefore, we can conclude that these compounds are not genotoxic at the conditions tested. These results support that the presence of CSSP and GSSP in the food/ feed is not of concern, although further studies are needed to complete their safety profile.

Adolescent obesity is a health problem worldwide. Drug therapy for obesity in children is only acceptable if done within the framework of a comprehensive weight loss, prevention of comorbidities, including health education, changes in lifestyles, diet and exercise. These pharmacological treatments indicate that mainly young patients did not respond to standard measures and developing complications. The role of bariatric surgery, with or without the use of drugs is subject to further research to elucidate its role among the various treatment options for these patients. Currently being studied a wide range of drugs to those included gastrointestinal hormones. Scientific information regarding the use of exenatide in obese patients without diabetes is still limited. The use of exenatide in adolescents with morbid obesity may represent a therapeutic complement invaluable, effective and free of complications, and prevents future bariatric surgery.
