Snow damages on trees of an uneven age in mixed broadleaf forests:effects of topographical conditions and tree characteristics

Snow damage on natural stands is an important problem concerning mountainous forest *** the present research,the frequency and intensity of heavy snow damage on natural stands and the relationship of damages with characteristics of trees,stand and topography were studied in mountainous forests of northern Iran.A systematic sampling design was applied to the study area(140 ha),with 122 circular *** grid dimension was100 m and each plot area was 1000 m^*** four types of snow damage to trees include:crown damage(8.6%),stem breakage(5.4%),uprooting(3.2%),and bending(1.4%).The frequency of crown damage grew with an increase inthe diameter at breast height(DBH),while the frequency of stem breakage,uprooting and bending decreased with an increase the *** frequency of crown damage,stem breakage,and total damages was related to tree species(p<0.01).Not all tree species were equally susceptible to snow *** amount of damage grew with increasing elevation and slope angle and decreased with increasing soil *** trees(DBH<25 cm)were more susceptible to snow damage than other *** damage decreased by as the trees in the stand became more mixed in *** susceptibility of trees to snow damage increased by height and slenderness *** adequate silvicultural operation,snow damage can be reduced to a minimum level in these natural forests.

Nickel-iron-oxide catalysts were synthesized by a liquid-phase method, through the oxalate route, and used, as anodes, in an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer. The effect of the heating treatments (performed at 350 degrees C, 450 degrees C, and 550 degrees C) on the structure, composition, particle size, and catalytic activity was analyzed. The morphological features were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing an increased particle size for the catalysts treated at higher temperatures (from approximate to 4 nm at 350 degrees C to approximate to 10 nm at 550 degrees C). The structure and surface composition were evaluated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The electrochemical characterization was performed in a 5 cm2 single-cell setup. The highest performance was obtained with the sample treated at 450 degrees C, reaching current density values equal to 3.25 A cm-2 at 2.2 V. The catalysts' behavior was also compared, under the same conditions, with NiO and IrO2 commercial catalysts, demonstrating a higher activity of this class of compounds. The time-stability test of ca. 100 h showed a more constant behavior for the catalyst treated at 350 degrees ***: Electrolyser;Nickel-iron oxides;Anion exchange membrane;Oxygen evolution reaction;Calcination temperature.

Willows （Salix spp.） are a very diverse group of catkin-bearing trees and shrubs that are widely distributed across temperate regions of the globe. Some species respond well to being grown in short rotation coppice （SRC） cycles, which are much shorter than conventional forestry. Cop- picing reinvigorates growth and the biomass rapidly accumulated can be used as a source of renewable carbon for bioenergy and biofuels. As SRC willows re-distribute nutrients during the perennial cycle they require only minimal nitrogen fertilizer for growth. This results in fuel chains with potentially high greenhouse gas reductions. To exploit their potential for renewable energy, willows need to be kept free of pests and diseases and yields need to be improved without significantly increasing the requirements for fertilizers and water. The biomass composition needs to be optimized for different end-uses. Yields also need to be sustainable on land less productive for food crops to reduce conflicts over land use. Advances in understanding the physiology and growth of willow, and in the identification of genes underlying key traits, are now at the stage where they can start to be used in breeding programs to help achieve these goals.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement （TAVR） has revolutionised the treatment of patients with aortic stenosis （AS） over the last 15 *** is a well-established procedure for the treatment of patients considered high risk for open surgery. Results from the PARTNER （Placement of AoRTic traNscathetER） trial showed that inoperable patients randomly assigned to TAVR, had a 20% reduction in all-cause mortality, as well as hospitalisation, at one year compared to best medical management.

A PEGylated-PLGA random nanofibrous membrane loaded with gold and iron oxide nanoparticles and with silibinin was prepared by electrospinning deposition. The nanofibrous membrane can be remotely controlled and activated by a laser light or magnetic field to release biological agents on demand. The nanosystems were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. The drug loading efficiency and drug content percentages were determined by UV-vis optical absorption spectroscopy. The nanofibrous membrane irradiated by a relatively low-intensity laser or stimulated by a magnetic field showed sustained silibinin release for at least 60 h, without the burst effect. The proposed low-cost electrospinning procedure is capable of assembling, via a one-step procedure, a stimuli-responsive drug-loaded nanosystem with metallic nanoparticles to be externally activated for controlled drug delivery.
