Pre-diagnostic levels of adiponectin and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 are associated with colorectal cancer risk

AIm： To examine the relationships between pre-diag- nostic biomarkers and colorectal cancer risk and assess their relevance in predictive ***： A nested case-control study was designed to include all first primary incident colorectal cancer cases diagnosed between inclusion in the SUpplemen- tation en VItamines et min^raux AntioXydants cohort in 1994 and the end of follow-up in 2007. Cases （n = 50） were matched with two randomly selected con- trols （n = 100）. Conditional logistic regression models were used to investigate the associations between pre- diagnostic levels of hs-CRP, adiponectin, leptin, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 （sVCAm-1）, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-I, E-selectin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and colorectal cancer risk. Area under the receiver operating curves （AUC） and relative integrated discrimination improvement （RIDI） statistics were used to assess the discriminatory poten- tial of the models. RESULTS： Plasma adiponectin level was associated with decreased colorectal cancer risk （P for linear trend -- 0.03）. Quartiles of sVCAm-1 were associated with increased colorectal cancer risk （P for linear trend = 0.02）. No association was observed with any of the other biomarkers. Compared to standard models with known risk factors, those including both adiponectin and sVCAm-1 had substantially improved performance for colorectal cancer risk prediction （P for AUC improve- ment = 0.01, RIDI = 26.5%）. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that pre-diag- nostic plasma adiponectin and sVCAm-1 levels are as- sociated with decreased and increased colorectal cancer risk, respectively. These relationships must be confirmed in large validation studies.

Three-dimensional imaging reconstruction of the kidney’s anatomy for a tailored minimally invasive partial nephrectomy:A pilot study

Objective:The aim of the study was to evaluate three-dimensional virtual models(3DVms)usefulness in the intraoperative assistance of minimally-invasive partial nephrectomy in highly complex renal ***:At our institution cT1-2N0m0 all renal masses with Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomical classification score≥10 treated with minimally-invasive partial nephrectomy were considered for the present *** inclusion a baseline contrast-enhanced computed tomography in order to obtain 3DVms,the baseline and postoperative serum creatinine as well as estimated glomerular filtration rate values were *** patients,in which 3DVms were used to assist the surgeon in the planning and intraoperative guidance,were then compared with a control group of patients who underwent minimally-invasive partial nephrectomy with the same renal function assessments,but without *** logistic regression models were used to predict the margin,ischemia,and complication score ***:Overall,79 patients met the inclusion criteria and were compared with 143 complex renal masses without 3DVm *** 3DVm group showed better postoperative outcomes in terms of baseline-weighted differential estimated glomerular filtration rate(-17.7%vs.-22.2%,p=0.03),postoperative complications(16.5%vs.23.1%,p=0.03),and major complications(Clavien Dindo>III,2.5%vs.5.6%,p=0.03).At multivariable logistic regression 3DVm assistance independently predicted higher rates of successful partial nephrectomy(odds ratio:1.42,p=0.03).Conclusion:3DVms represent a useful tool to plan a tailored surgical approach in case of surgically complex *** can be used in different ways,matching the surgeon's needs from the planning phase to the demolitive and reconstructive phase,leading towards maximum safety and efficacy outcomes.

Group Exercise versus Personal Training for Prostate Cancer Patients: A Pilot Randomized Trial

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated psychosocial and physical benefit from exercise for older men treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa). To date, different intervention delivery methods have not been assessed. This study compared the effect of group-based exercise (GBE) to personal training (PT) in men undergoing ADT for PCa. methods: 13 participants (mean age = 68.2, SD = 7.2) were randomly assigned to GBE or PT for 8 weeks. Participants exercised for 60 minutes three times per week at a moderate-vigorous intensity. Results: 10 participants completed the intervention. At post-intervention, the PT group improved: fatigue, systolic BP, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and maximal leg strength;participants in the GBE group improved leg strength. At 8 weeks, maximal upper body strength in the PT group was greater than the GBE group. There were no adverse events associated with moderate-high intensity training in this population of older men. Conclusion: PT may be more efficacious than GBE in improving several physical fitness outcomes and fatigue in men with PCa who are androgen deprived. Due to the small sample size and attrition, these results require cautious interpretation and confirmation from adequately powered trials.

H pylori (CagA) and Epstein-Barr virus infection in gastric carcinomas:Correlation with p53 mutation and c-myc,Bcl-2 and Bax expression

AIm: To investigate the interrelationship between H pylori and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in the gastric carcinogenesis having in focus the p53 mutation and the c-myc, Bcl-2 and Bax expression. mETHODS: seventy-one gastric carcinoma tissues were assessed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for H pylori and in situ hybridization for EBV. c-myc, Bcl-2 and Bax expression were detected by immunohistochemistry and single-stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) for p53 mutation. RESULTS: The positivity rates for H pylori and EBV were 94.4% and 8.45%, respectively. The majority of the cases displayed only the H pylori presence. All EBV positive cases were also H pylori positive. None infectious agent was observed in 5.55% of the cases. The intestinal type tumor was more frequent in the co-infected and non-infected groups. The female predominated in the non-infected group showing statistical significance (70.4% vs 29.6%, P=0.039). The Bcl-2 was only detected in the group exclusively infected by H pylori. However, c-myc and Bax were detected in the three groups but with a low frequency in the co-infected group. mutation of p53 was present in all groups, with the highest frequencies in the H pylori positive groups. CONCLUSION: The frequency of H pylori infection in gastric carcinomas was high. The presented data indicated that gastric carcinogenesis has different pathways depending of the presence of the two investigated infectious agents, suggesting a possible involvement of H pylori with apoptotic process. The low expression of c-myc and Bax in the EBV-positive groups suggests that EBV may inhibit the expression of these proteins. Nevertheless, p53 mutation shows to be a relevant alteration, independent of both infectious agents.

Evaluation of a Suspended Personal Radiation Protection System vs. Conventional Apron and Shields in Clinical Interventional Procedures

Purpose: This clinical study compares conventional lead aprons and ancillary shields to a functionally weightless personal overhead-supported system with expanded coverage. materials and methods: Primary operators performed procedures (N = 126, fluoroscopy minutes = 1209) using one of 2 methods of radiation protection and wearing dosimeters on multiple body locations. method “LAS” (Lead-Apron+Shields): lead skirt, vest, thyroid shield, with 100% use of under-table shield, side shield, and mobile suspended lead-acrylic shield. method “Zgrav”: ZeroGravity system (CFI medical Solutions) with variable use of shielding. The studied early model moving with the operator had a curved lead-acrylic head shield (0.5 mm Pb) and expansive lead apron (0.5 - 1.0 mm Pb) that covered leg to distal calf and proximal arm to elbow, and a drape that permitted sterile entry and exit. Study was institutional review board approved and HIPPA-compliant. Results: measured with a sensitive electronic dosimeter, eye exposures were 99% (P 0.001) reduced for Zgrav with upgraded face shield vs. LAS, regardless of use or non-use of suspended shield with Zgrav. With optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters, operator exposures, standardized to minutes of fluoroscopy and Fluoroscopic Patient Dose Area Product, were reduced by 87% - 100% for eye & head, neck, humerus, and tibia (Zgrav vs. LAS). Overall eye & head exposure reduction for entire study was 94%. Non-equivalence of torso exposures was not demonstrated. A brief user survey showed ergonomic advantages of Zgrav. Conclusion: Compared to conventional lead aprons with shields, the suspended system provided superior operator protection during interventional fluoroscopy, allowing operators to perform procedures without potentially obstructive shields.

Optimization of the Angle of Frog in mouldboard Tillage Operations in Sandy Clay Soil

This paper investigated the effect of three independent variables including: tillage speed (ranges of below 2.5 m/s and between 2.5 m/s and 5 m/s), tillage depth (range of 10 cm from 0 cm to 30 cm) and frog angle (30° 40°, and 50°) on draught forces. The experimental work was completed with determination of the draught forces using an analytical method (Saunders Equation). Numerical Simulation: Discrete Element method (DEm) was used to verify the results obtained analytically. The results indicated that tillage depth has a stronger influence on the draught forces as compared to the tillage speed. minimal draught forces can then be achieved through operating at shallow tillage depth and maintaining a frog angle of 30°. The results showed a variance of ±15.95% to the calculated values supporting DEm as a numerical method capable of predicting draft forces correctly, tillage power optimization and determination of optimal frog angle for the mouldboard plough.

The auditory brainstem implant(ABI)was originally developed to provide rehabilitation of retrocochlear deafness caused by neurofibromatosis type 2(NF2).Recent studies of the ABI have investigated outcomes in non-NF2 cohorts,such as patients with cochlear nerve aplasia or cochlear ossification and more recently,intractable *** technologies that improve the ABI-neural tissue interface are being explored as means to improve performance and decrease side *** discoveries in optogenetics and bioengineering present opportunities to continually evolve this technology into the future,enhancing spatial selectivity of neuronal activation in the cochlear nucleus and preventing side effects through reduction in activation of non-target neuronal *** advances will improve surgical planning and ultimately improve patients1 audiological *** research has rapidly increased in the 21st century and applications of this technology are likely to continually ***,we aim to characterize ongoing clinical,basic science,and bioengineering advances in ABIs and discuss future directions of this technology.

The Potentiality of Non Timber Forest Products. Fruit Availability, Phytochemical Properties of Rosa rubiginosa L. Rose Hips

We evaluated fruit availability, phytochemical characteristics and mineral content of R. rubiginosa L. rose hips, at two experimental sites in San Luis province: Potrero de los Funes-El Volcán (PF-V) and Estancia Grande (EG). Plant density was 70 plants/ha (1 ha = 10,000 m2) in PF-V and 50 plants/ha in EG. Fruit availability (DF) in fresh fruits (FF) was 4.39 kg (PF-V) and 3.10 kg (EG) during march, and decreased during June. Ascorbic acid in FF increased during ripening period, peaking on late April, early may, and diminished 75% - 85% in dried fruits. Total soluble solids in FF ranged from 32.55 to 55.20 °Brix. Elements Ba, Ca, Fe, K, Zn and Cu, determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), were significant for human health. Dried fruits maintain a high level of ascorbic acid, a characteristic added to content of mineral elements, particularly calcium content, providing an important nutritional value to R. rubiginosa rose hips.
