Infectious keratitis in Vietnam:etiology,organisms,and management at Vietnam National Eye Hospital

AIM:To report the etiologies,risk factors,treatments,and outcomes of infectious keratitis(IK)at a major Vietnamese eye ***:This is a retrospective review of all cases of IK at Vietnam National Eye Hospital(VNEH)in Hanoi,*** histories,demographics,clinical features,microbiological results,and treatment outcomes were ***:IK was diagnosed in 1974 eyes of 1952 patients,with ocular trauma being the greatest risk factor for IK(34.2%),frequently resulting from an agriculturerelated injur y(53.3%).The mean duration between symptom onset and presentation to VNEH was 19.3±14.4 d,and 98.7%of patients had been treated with topical antibiotic and/or antifungal agents prior to evaluation at *** on smear results of 1706 samples,the most common organisms identified were bacteria(n=1107,64.9%)and fungi(n=1092,64.0%),with identification of both bacteria and fungi in 614(36.0%)***-five of 374 bacterial cultures(14.7%)and 426 of 838 fungal cultures(50.8%)were positive,with the most commonly cultured pathogens being Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Streptococcus pneumonia,Fusarium spp.,and Aspergillus *** perforation and descemetocele developed in 391(19.8%)and 93(4.7%)eyes,*** treatment was successful in resolving IK in 50.4%eyes,while 337(17.1%)eyes underwent penetrating or anterior lamellar *** was performed in 7.1%of eyes,most commonly in the setting of fungal ***:Ocular trauma is a major risk factor for IK in Vietnam,which is diagnosed in almost 400 patients each year at *** this,and as approximately one quarter of the eyes that develop IK require corneal transplantation or evisceration,greater emphasis should be placed on the development of prevention and treatment programs for IK in Vietnam.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and perfluorinated compounds and evaluation of the availability of reclaimed water in Kinmen

Emerging contaminants have commonly been observed in environmental waters but have not been included in water quality assessments at many locations around the *** evaluate the availability of reclaimed water in Kinmen,Taiwan,this study provides the first survey of the distribution of thirty-three pharmaceuticals and five perfluorinated chemicals in lake waters and water from local wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs).The results showed that the target emerging contaminants in Kinmen lakes were at trace ng/L *** addition,most of the target compounds were present in the Jincheng and Taihu WWTP influents at ng/L concentrations levels,of which 5 compounds(erythromycin-H2O(1340 ng/L),ibuprofen(1763 ng/L),atenolol(1634 ng/L),acetaminophen(2143 ng/L),and caffeine(3113 ng/L))reached mg/L *** overall treatment efficiencies of the Jincheng and Taihu WWTPs with respect to these pharmaceuticals and perfluorinated chemicals were poor;half of the compounds were less than 50%*** compounds(sulfamethoxazole,erythromycin-H2O,clarithromycin,ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin)with risk quotient(RQ)values>1 in the effluent should be further investigated to understand their effects on the aquatic *** and advanced treatment units are found necessary to provide high-quality recycled water and sustainable water resources.

One of the most promising tools for the control of fungal plant diseases is spray-induced gene silencing(SIGS).In SIGS,small interfering RNA(siRNA)or double-stranded RNA(dsRNA)targeting essential or virulence-related pathogen genes are exogenously applied to plants and postharvest products to trigger RNA interference(RNAi)of the targeted genes,inhibiting fungal growth and ***,SIGS is limited by the unstable nature of RNA under environmental *** use of layered double hydroxide or clay particles as carriers to deliver biologically active dsRNA,a formulation termed BioClay^(TM),can enhance RNA durability on plants,prolonging its activity against ***,we demonstrate that dsRNA delivered as BioClay can prolong protection against Botrytis cinerea,a major plant fungal pathogen,on tomato leaves and fruit and on mature chickpea *** increased the protection window from 1 to 3 weeks on tomato leaves and from 5 to 10 days on tomato fruits,when compared with naked *** flowering chickpea plants,BioClay provided prolonged protection for up to 4 weeks,covering the critical period of poding,whereas naked dsRNA provided limited *** research represents a major step forward for the adoption of SIGS as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fungicides.

Crowdsourcing in health and medical research:a systematic review

Background:Crowdsourcing is used increasingly in health and medical *** is the process of aggregating crowd wisdom to solve a *** purpose of this systematic review is to summarize quantitative evidence on crowdsourcing to improve ***:We followed Cochrane systematic review guidance and systematically searched seven databases up to September 4th *** were included if they reported on crowdsourcing and related to health or *** were excluded if recruitment was the only use of *** determined the level of evidence associated with review findings using the GRADE ***:We screened 3508 citations,accessed 362 articles,and included 188 ***-six studies examined effectiveness,127 examined feasibility,and 37 examined *** most common purposes were to evaluate surgical skills(17 studies),to create sexual health messages(seven studies),and to provide layperson cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)out-of-hospital(six studies).Seventeen observational studies used crowdsourcing to evaluate surgical skills,finding that crowdsourcing evaluation was as effective as expert evaluation(low quality).Four studies used a challenge contest to solicit human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)testing promotion materials and increase HIV testing rates(moderate quality),and two of the four studies found this approach saved *** studies suggested that an interactive technology system increased rates of layperson initiated CPR out-ofhospital(moderate quality).However,studies analyzing crowdsourcing to evaluate surgical skills and laypersoninitiated CPR were only from high-income *** studies examined crowdsourcing to inform artificial intelligence projects,most often related to annotation of medical *** was evaluated using different outcomes,limiting the extent to which studies could be ***:Crowdsourcing has been used to improve health in many *** crowds

Economic optimization of resource-constrained project scheduling:a two-phase metaheuristic approach

This paper deals with the problem of project scheduling subject to multiple execution modes with non-renewable resources, and a model that handles some of monetary issues in real world *** objective is to schedule the activities to maximize the expected net present value(NPV) of the project, taking into account the activity costs, the activity durations, and the cash flows generated by successfully completing an *** to the combinatorial nature of this problem, the current study develops a hybrid of branch-and-bound procedure and memetic algorithm to enhance both mode assignment and activity *** for the makespan minimization problem have been made through a set of benchmark problem *** performance is rated on the maximization of the project NPV and computational results show that the two-phase hybrid metaheuristic performs competitively for all instances of different problem sizes.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)are ubiquitous pollutants generated by industrial *** compounds are released into the atmosphere and soil as complex mixtures due to incomplete combustion during daily living(tobacco smoking,traffic-related emission,cooking,and heating)and industrial activities(electronic waste recycling,asphalt,coal-fired power plants,foundries,and blast furnaces).Owing to their highly lipophilic nature,PAHs are readily absorbed into the human body through ingestion,inhalation,or dermal contact,and are subsequently distributed rapidly and widely throughout the *** exposure to PAHs is of significant concern,as studies have demonstrated that it may lead to adverse effects,such as immunotoxicity,neurotoxicity,carcinogenicity,genotoxicity,teratogenicity,and reproductive toxicity[1].Allergic diseases,such as asthma,rhinitis,eczema,hay fever,and food allergies,are among the most prevalent chronic health *** allergies are recognized as a result of interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors,they are primarily considered environmental diseases.

Development and validation of a nomogram for survival benefit of lymphadenectomy in resected gallbladder cancer

Background:Due to absence of large,prospective,randomized,clinical trial data,the potential survivalbenefit of lymphadenectomy with different number of regional lymph nodes(LNs)remains *** aim to create a predicting model to help estimate individualized potential survival benefit oflymphadenectomy with more regional LNs for patients with resected gallbladder cancer(GBC).Methods:Patients with resected GBC were selected from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Resultsdatabase who were diagnosed between 2004 and *** included age,race,sex,grade,histologicalstage,tumor sizes and receipt of non-primary *** types of multivariate survival regression modelswere constructed and *** best model performance was tested by the external validation data fromour ***:A total of 1,669 patients met the inclusion criteria for this *** lognormal survival modelshowed the best performance and was tested by the external validation data,including 193 patients withresected GBC from our ***,which based on the accelerated failure time parametricsurvival model,were built to estimate individualized survival.C-index,was up to 0.754 and 0.710 in internalvalidation for more and less regional LNs removed,*** of internal and external calibrationcurves showed good agreement between predicted and observed outcomes in the 1-,3-,and 5-year overallsurvival(OS).Conclusions:A predicting model can be used as a decision model to predict which patients may obtainbenefit from lymphadenectomy with more regional LNs.
