Biological weathering of phlogopite during enriched vermicomposting

As the dominant macrofauna in many soils,earthworms play a significant role in mineral weathering and nutrient release from mineral structures into available forms for root uptake.Phlogopite is a trioctahedral micaceous mineral that can be weathered to other minerals through release of its interlayer potassium(K).In this study,we investigated the effect of earthworm activities and associated microbial communities on phlogopite weathering during the production of phlogopite-enriched vermicompost with different quantities of phlogopite added.An experiment was run under laboratory conditions using three levels of phlogopite(0,20%and 40%by weight)in triplicates.Each Petri dish contained 20 g of a mixture of cow manure and phlogopite,and vermicomposting process was performed by inoculation of eight Eisenia foetida earthworms.Changes in clay mineralogy and C/N ratio in each dish were assessed at days 0,45,90,135,and 180 during vermicomposting.The results indicated that phlogopite was partially weathered to vermiculite and interstratified mica-vermiculite during the vermicomposting process.The rate of weathering was higher during the early stages of vermicomposting(the first 90 d).The weathering of phlogopite was influenced considerably by the activity of earthworms and associated microbial communities during the organic matter transformation process.At the early stages of the process,the weathering rate for different levels of phlogopite was not significantly different,but over time it accelerated steadily,and the difference increased.

Factors Affecting the Occurrence of Palygorskite in Central Iranian Soils Developed on Tertiary Sediments

Limited information is available on the distribution and origin of palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments as the major soil parent materials in central Iran and other Middle Eastern countries. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution and origin of palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments, and to identify the major soil properties that influence palygorskite distribution in the soils studied. Sixteen soil profiles developed on Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Oligocene-Miocene, Miocene and Pliocene sediments were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscopy. Physicochemical characteristics of the soils and sediments including particle size distribution, pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, gypsum, carbonates, and soluble Si, Ca and Mg were determined. The principal component analysis was used to establish the relationships between palygorskite and the physicochemical characteristics of the soils studied. Results showed that clay fraction of all the soils in the study area was dominated by palygorskite. The highest amount of palygorskite was found in horizons where simultaneous accumulation of both carbonates and gypsum occurred. Limited amount of palygorskite was found in salic and calcic horizons. Palygorskite seemed to be of eolian origin in the surface horizon of all the soils. Using principal component analysis, the soluble Mg/Ca ratio, pH, soluble Si and gypsum contents were identified as the most important factors affecting the distribution and genesis of palygorskite in the soils studied. Results might suggest the neoformation of palygorskite by precipitation from solutions in which evaporation fluxes were very high. However, palygorskite in soils developed on Tertiary sediments in central Iran seems to be of both inherited and pedogenic origins.

Comparative Evaluation of a Modified Acetic Method for Extraction of Antioxidant Compounds from Black Beans (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i>)

Extraction of phenolic compounds from bean seed coats by acetic acid was evaluated and compared to conventional extraction with 80% methanol. Total phenols, flavonoids and free radical scavenging capacity were determined by colorimetric methods. Furthermore, qualitative flavonoid characterization was performed via HPLC diode array. The acetic acid extract contained 73.4 ± 7 mg/g of sample expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE), and 41.3 ± 4 mg/g as catechin equivalents (CE). The acetic acid extract (at 1 mg/mL) showed over 89% efficiency to scavenge the 1,1 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) radical (EC50 = 6.13 mg extract/mg standard). Gallic acid, delphinidin-3-glycoside, petunidinglycoside, petunidin, malvidin-3-glycoside, myricetin-glycoside, quercitin-glycoside, saponin (β-g), and 3-hydroxy-5, 7-megastigmadien-9-one were identified in both extracts. Additionally, kaempferol-3-glycoside was found in the acetic acid extract. Sequential acetic acid extractions indicated that the antiradical activity was about 90% in DPPH radical scavenging within the first 8 h of extraction, when compared to a 24 h extraction. Matrix metalloproteases and their tissue inhibitors in non-alcoholic liver fibrosis of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients

AIM To investigate the relationships among diverse metalloproteases(MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors(TIMPs) and non-alcoholic liver fibrosis in human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected patients.METHODS Single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in MMPs, TNF-α and CCR5 genes, and serum levels of MMPs and TIMPs were determined in HIV-infected individuals with/out hepatitis C virus(HCV) coinfection. A total of 158 patients were included, 57 of whom were HCVcoinfected. All patients drank < 50 g ethanol/day. Diverse SNPs(MMP-1-1607 1G/2G, MMP-8-799C/T, MMP-9-1562 C/T, MMP-13-77A/G, TNF-α-308 G/A,CCR5-?32), and serum levels of MMPs(2, 3, 8, 9 and 10) and TIMPs(1, 2 and 4) were assessed. Liver fibrosis was determined by transient elastometry, although other non-invasive markers of fibrosis were also considered. Significant liver fibrosis(F ≥ 2) was defined by a transient elastometry value ≥ 7.1 kP a.RESULTS A total of 34 patients(21.5%) had liver fibrosis ≥ F2. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 serum levels were higher in patients with liver fibrosis ≥ F2(P = 0.02 and P = 0.03, respectively) and correlated positively with transient elastometry values(P = 0.02 and P = 0.0009, respectively), whereas MMP-9 values were negatively correlated with transient elastometry measurements(P = 0.01). Multivariate analyses showed that high levels of MMP-2(OR = 2.397; 95%CI: 1.191-4.827, P = 0.014) were independently associated with liver fibrosis ≥ F2 in the patients as a whole. MMP-2(OR = 7.179; 95%CI: 1.210-42.581, P = 0.03) and male gender(OR = 10.040; 95%CI: 1.621-62.11, P = 0.013) were also independent predictors of fibrosis ≥ F2 in the HCV-infected subgroup. Likewise, MMP-2, TIMP-2 and MMP-9 were independently associated with transient elastometry values and other non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis. None of the six SNPs evaluated had any significant association with liver fibrosis ≥ F2.CONCLUSION Certain MMPs and TIMPs, particularly MMP-2, seems to be associated with non-alcoholic liver fibrosis in HIVinfected patients with/without HCV coinfec
