A core assumption of sexual selection theory is that sexually selected weapons,specialized morphological structures used directly in male con-tests,can improve an individual's reproductive success but only if the bearer can overcome associated costs,the negative effects on the bear-er's fitness ***,recent studies have shown that producing and wielding exaggerated weapons may not necessarily be ***,some traits can be selected for supporting,or compensating for,the expense of producing and wielding such exaggerated weapons.n the ant-mimicking jumping spider Myrmarachne gisti,exaggerated chelicerae are borne only by adult males and not females,showing sexual dimorphism and steep positive allometry with body ***,we determine the potential benefits of bearing exaggerated chelicerae during male contests and explore the potential for costs in terms of prey-capture efficiency and compensation between chelicera size and neighboring trait *** males with longer chelicerae won most of their male-male contests,we found no significant differences in prey-capture effi-ciency between males and females regardless of whether prey was winged or ***'elongated chelicerae thus do not impede their efficiency at capturing ***,we found that the sizes of all neighboring traits are positively correlated with chelicera size,suggesting that these traits may be under correlational *** together,our findings suggest that *** males armed with the exaggerated chelicerae that function as weapons win more fights at limited cost for performance in prey capture and compensate for neighboring structures.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants are notorious for their transmissibility,but little is known about their subgenomic RNA(sgRNA)*** study applied RNA-seq to delineate the quantitative and qualitative profiles of canonical sgRNA of 118 respiratory samples collected from patients infected with Omicron BA.2 and compared with 338 patients infected with non-variant of concern(non-VOC)-D614G.A unique characteristic profile depicted by the relative abundance of 9 canonical sgRNAs was reproduced by both BA.2 and non-VOCD614G regardless of host gender,age and presence of ***,such profile was lost in samples with low viral load,suggesting a potential application of sgRNA pattern to indicate viral activity of individual patient at a specific time point.A characteristic qualitative profile of canonical sgRNAs was also reproduced by both BA.2 and *** presence of a full set of canonical sgRNAs carried a coherent correlation with crude viral load(AUC¼0.91,95%CI 0.88–0.94),and sgRNA ORF7b was identified to be the best surrogate marker allowing feasible routine application in characterizing the infection status of individual *** potentials in using sgRNA as a target for vaccine and antiviral development are worth pursuing.

AIM: To identify differentially expressed hydrophobic proteins in colorectal cancer. METHODS: Eighteen pairs of colorectal cancerous tissues in addition to tissues from normal mucosa were analysed. Hydrophobic proteins were extracted from the tissues, separated using 2-D gel electrophoresis and analysed using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Statistical analysis of the proteins was carried out in order to determine the significance of each protein to colorectal cancer (CRC) and also their relation to CRC stages, grades and patients’ gender. RESULTS: Thirteen differentially expressed proteins which were expressed abundantly in either cancerous or normal tissues were identified. A number of these proteins were found to relate strongly with a particular stage or grade of CRC. In addition, the association of these proteins with patient gender also appeared to be ***: Stomatin-like protein 2 was found to be a promising biomarker for CRC, especially in female patients. The differentially expressed proteins identified were associated with CRC and may act as drug target candidates.

We report herein a class of superatomic AU13 clusters stabilized by different N-heterocyclic carbenes(NHCs).The clusters show diverse metal surface structures,properties and functions as exemplified by:(1)the first anionic AU13 cluster[Au1g(NHC-1)sBr6],which has bulky NHC-1 ligands that lead to a rather open metal surface contributing to its high catalytic activity;(2)the tricationic cluster[Au13(NHC-2)sBr2]+which has bidentate,benzyl-rich NHC-2 ligands that make it ultra-stable and highly-luminescent,suitable for bio-imaging;and(3)by bearing two pyridyl groups on NHC-3,the dicationic cluster[Au:a(NHC-3)gClg]f+exhibits reversible and stable visible absorption and solubility responses to protonation/deprotonation cycles,making it a potential pH sensor(NHC-1=1,3-disopropylbenzimidazolin-ylidene;NHC-2=1,3-bis(1-benzyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-ium-yl)propane;NHC-3=1,3-bis(icolyI)benzimidazolin-ylidene).The study nicely demonstrates the importance of ligands in designing metal nanoclusters with desired functionalities.

Copper-hydrides have been intensively studied for a long time due to their utilization in a variety of technologically important chemical ***,poor stability of the species severely hinders its isolation,storage and operation,which is worse for nano-sized *** report here an unprecedented strategy to access to ultrastable copper-hydride nanoclusters(NCs),namely,using bidentate N-heterocyclic carbenes as stabilizing ligands in addition to *** this work,a simple synthetic protocol was developed to synthesize the first large copper-hydride nanoclusters(NCs)stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbenes(NHCs).The NC,with the formula of Cu3i(RS)25(NHC)3H6(NHC=1,4-bis(1-benzyl-1 H-benzimidazol-1-ium-3-yl)butane,RS=4-fluorothiophenol),was fully characterized by high resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrum,nuclear magnetic resonance,ultra-violet visible spectroscopy,density functional theory(DFT)calculations and single-crystal X-ray ***,the title cluster exhibits unprecedented Cu4 tetrahedron-based vertex-sharing(TBVS)superstructure(fusion of six Cu4 tetrahedra).Moreover,the ultrahigh thermal stability renders the cluster a model system to highlight the power of NHCs(even other carbenes)in controlling geometrical,electronic and surface structure of polyhydrido copper clusters.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of intramuscular injection of testosterone undecanoate on overall quality of life （QoL） in men with testosterone deficiency syndrome （TDS）. A randomized controlled trial over a 12-month period was carried out in 2009. One hundred and twenty men aged 40 years and above with a diagnosis of TDS （serum total testosterone 〈12 nmol 1-1 and total Aging Male Symptom （AMS） scores ≥ 27） were invited to participate. Interventions comprised intramuscular injection of either placebo or 1000 mg testosterone undecanoate, given at weeks O, 6, 18, 30 and 42. This paper presents the secondary analysis of QoL changes measured in the scores of Short-Form-12 （SF-12） scale at baseline, weeks 30 and 48 after the first injection. A total of 56/60 and 58/60 men from the active treatment and placebo group, respectively, completed the study. At week 48, before adjusting for baseline differences, the QoL of men in the treatment group improved significantly in five out of the eight domains on SF-12. The physical health composite scores improved 4.0 points from a baseline of 41.9±7.0 in the treatment group compared to 0.8 point from a baseline of 43.7--7.1 in the placebo group （F=3.652, P=0.027）. The mental health composite scores improved 4.4 points from a baseline of 37.1±9.0 in the treatment group compared to 1.0 points from a baseline of 37.6±7.9 in the placebo group （F=4.514, P=-0.018）. After adjusting for baseline differences, significant improvement was observed in mental health composite scores, but not in physical health composite scores. LQng-acting testosterone undecanoate significanUy improved the mental health component of QoL in men with TDS.

AIM:To evaluate the usefulness of differentially expressed proteins from colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues for differentiating cancer and normal ***:A Proteomic approach was used to identify the differentially expressed proteins between CRC and normal *** proteins were extracted using Tris buffer and thiourea lysis buffer (TLB) for extraction of aqueous soluble and membrane-associated proteins,***,namely principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA),were used to assess the usefulness of these proteins for identifying the cancerous state of ***:Differentially expressed proteins identified were 37 aqueous soluble proteins in Tris extracts and 24 membrane-associated proteins in TLB *** on the protein spots intensity on 2D-gel images,PCA by applying an eigenvalue > 1 was successfully used to reduce the number of principal components (PCs) into 12 and seven PCs for Tris and TLB extracts,respectively,and subsequently six PCs,respectively from both the extracts were used for *** LDA classification for Tris extract showed 82.7% of original samples were correctly classified,whereas 82.7% were correctly classified for the cross-validated *** LDA for TLB extract showed that 78.8% of original samples and 71.2% of the cross-validated samples were correctly ***:The classification of CRC tissues by PCA and LDA provided a promising distinction between normal and cancer *** methods can possibly be used for identification of potential biomarkers among the differentially expressed proteins identified.

AIM： To identify and analyze the differentially expressed proteins in normal and cancerous tissues of four patients suffering from colon cancer. METHODS： Colon tissues （normal and cancerous） were homogenized and the proteins were extracted using three protein extraction buffers. The extraction buffers were used in an orderly sequence of increasing extraction strength for proteins with hydrophobic properties. The protein extracts were separated using the SDS-PAGE method and the images were captured and analyzed using Quantity One software. The target protein bands were subjected to in-gel digestion with trypsin and finally analyzed using an ESI-ion trap mass spectrometer. RESULTS： A total of 50 differentially expressed proteins in colonic cancerous and normal tissues were identified. CONCLUSION： Many of the identified proteins have been reported to be involved in the progression of similar or other types of cancers. However, some of the identified proteins have not been reported before. In addition, a number of hypothetical proteins were also identified.
