Human embryonic stem cells as an in vitro model for studying developmental origins of type 2 diabetes

The developmental origins of health and diseases(DOHaD)is a concept stating that adverse intrauterine environments contribute to the health risks of *** the theory emerged more than 30 years ago,many epidemiological and animal studies have confirmed that in utero exposure to environmental insults,including hyperglycemia and chemicals,increased the risk of developing noncommunicable diseases(NCDs).These NCDs include metabolic syndrome,type 2 diabetes,and complications such as diabetic *** the effects of different environmental insults on early embryo development would aid in understanding the underlying mechanisms by which these insults promote NCD *** stem cells(ESCs)have also been utilized by researchers to study the *** have pluripotent characteristics and can be differentiated into almost every cell lineage;therefore,they are excellent in vitro models for studying early developmental *** importantly,human ESCs(hESCs)are the best alternative to human embryos for research because of ethical *** this review,we will discuss different maternal conditions associated with DOHaD,focusing on the complications of maternal ***,we will review the differentiation protocols developed to generate different cell lineages from ***,we will review how hESCs are utilized as a model for research into the *** effects of environmental insults on hESC differentiation and the possible involvement of epigenetic regulation will be discussed.

Age-related osteoporosis is a metabolic skeletal disorder caused by estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal *** use of anti-osteoporotic drugs such as bisphosphonates and FDA-approved anti-resorptive selective estrogen receptor modulators(SERMs)has been associated with various clinical *** recently discovered a low-molecular-weight biocompatible and osteoanabolic phytoprotein,called HKUOT-S2 protein(32 kDa),from Dioscorea opposita Thunb that can accelerate bone defect ***,we demonstrated that the HKUOT-S2 protein treatment can enhance osteoblasts-induced ossification and suppress osteoporosis development by upregulating skeletal estrogen receptors(ERs)ERα,ERβ,and GPR30 expressions in ***,HKUOT-S2 protein estrogenic activities promoted hMSCs-osteoblasts differentiation and functions by increasing osteogenic markers,ALP,and RUNX2 expressions,ALP activity,and osteoblast biomineralization in *** treatment impaired the HKUOT-S2 protein-induced ERs expressions,osteoblasts differentiation,and ***,we demonstrated that the HKUOT-S2 protein could bind to ERs to exert osteogenic and osteoanabolic *** results showed that the biocompatible HKUOT-S2 protein can exert estrogenic and osteoanabolic properties by positively modulating skeletal estrogen receptor signaling to promote ossification and suppress ***,there is no or limited data if any,on osteoanabolic *** HKUOT-S2 protein can be applied as a new osteoanabolic SERM for osteoporosis treatment.

Syngas produced from the gasification of organic feedstocks from biomass is one of the clean and sustainable sources of *** advantages of simple access and renewability of biomass energy can meet the energy needs of temporary power *** study presents a biomass power-generation system for vehicular *** biomass and a free-piston Stirling engine generator(FPSEG)as the primary material and prime mover,respectively,biomass energy is converted into electricity by combusting the syngas to heat the *** and key parameter design for biomass gasification and thermoelectric conversion systems within a power generation system were performed.A porous medium area was constructed using Si-C foam ceramics to obtain an energy-conversion experimental *** effects of bed height,porosity,porous-region diameter,and air-intake conditions on the power-generation performance were investigated,and optimisations were performed for the thermoelectric conversion *** rate of increase during FPSEG power generation first increased and then decreased with increasing bed height,peaking at a bed height of 40 *** increasing porous-region diameter accelerated FPSEG power generation,whereas porosity changes in the porous media did not significantly affect the rate of change during FPSEG power *** increasing air intake,the rate of increase during power generation first increased and then *** maximum change rate and the highest thermoelectric conversion efficiency of the power-generation system occurred at 9.5 m^(3)/h and 6.5 m^(3)/h(~45.1%)air intakes,*** the thermal inertia and combustion structure of the thermoelectric conversion system significantly increased the power-generation rate of the system,with 1.8 W/s being observed at a 9.7 m^(3)/h air intake.

Unraveling the exceptional kinetics of Zn‖organic batteries in hydrated deep eutectic solution

Intuitively,the solvation structure featuring stronger interacted sheath in deep eutectic solution（DES）electrolyte would result in sluggish interfacial charge transfer and intense polarization,which obstructs its practical application in emerging Zn based ***,here we discover a Zn‖organic battery with exceptional kinetics properties enabled by a hydrated DES electrolyte,which can render higher discharge capacity,smaller voltage polarization,and faster kinetics of charge transfer in comparison with conventional aqueous 3 M ZnCl2electrolyte,though its viscosity is two orders of magnitude higher than the *** improved kinetics of charge transfer and ion diffusion is demonstrated to originate from the local electron structure regulation of cathode in hydrated DES ***,the DES electrolyte has also been shown to restrict parasitic reaction associated with active water by preferential urea-molecular adsorption on Zn surface and stronger water trapping in solvation structure,giving rise to long-term stable dendrite-free Zn plating/*** work provides a new rationale for understanding electrochemical behaviors of organic cathodes in DES electrolyte,which is conducive to the development of high-performance Zn‖organic batteries.

Statistical Research on Megahertz-peaked Spectra Pulsars

Megahertz-peaked spectra(MPS) pulsars are referred as cases whose radio spectra turn over around 100 MHz. We identified 53 MPS pulsars based on the spectral data from the literature, and statistically analyzed the spatial location distribution, the magnetic field-period distribution, peak frequencies, spectral indices, and dispersion measures of these MPS pulsars. We found that there is a strong positive correlation between the dispersion measures and the peak frequencies of MPS pulsars, and negative correlations of the dispersion measures with spectral indices and the ages are also found. Such correlations suggest that the interstellar medium is an important factor that affects observational properties of MPS pulsars.

Sodium citrate enhancing electrodeposition of metallic arsenic from toxic trivalent arsenic and the mechanism understanding

Electrochemical conversion of hypertoxic trivalent arsenic to value-added metallic arsenic can not only contribute to pollution abatement,but also resources reutilization,therefore being widely *** reduction of trivalent arsenic as a promising way is widely ***,the high efficiency conversion is retarded by the sluggish reduction kinetics of AsO33−and fierce evolution of side products of both H_(2)and toxic AsH_(3).Herein,by using the sodium citrate as the additive,the current efficiency for metal arsenic production is increased greatly from 60%to 91%,with the accompanied evolution of hypertoxic AsH_(3)being restrained from 0.15 Nm^(3)/t_(As)to 0.022 Nm^(3)/t_(As),promising a high-efficiency and green *** electrochemical tests and electrode surface characterizations aswell as DFT calculations indicate that the added sodium citrate promotes both the diffusion of reactive AsO_(3)^(3−)towards the cathode and its subsequent adsorption on the Ti cathode,contributing to smoother reduction for generating metal arsenic,with the evolution of toxic AsH_(3)being hindered at the same *** results can provide new insights for the highefficiency and greener conversion of hypertoxic trivalent arsenic to value-added metallic arsenic.

Spatiotemporal variation and driving factors of vegetation net primary productivity in the Guan-zhong Plain Urban Agglomeration,China from 2001 to 2020

Studying the spatiotemporal variation and driving mechanisms of vegetation net primary productivity(NPP)in the Guanzhong Plain Urban Agglomeration(GPUA)of China is highly important for regional green and low-carbon *** study used the Theil-Sen trend analysis,Mann-Kendall trend test,coefficient of variation,Hurst index,and machine learning method(eXtreme Gradient Boosting and SHapley Additive exPlanations(XGBoost-SHAP))to analyze the spatiotemporal variation of NPP in the GPUA from 2001 to 2020 and reveal its response to climate change and human *** results found that during 2001-2020,the averageNPP in the GPUA showed a significant upward trend,with an annual growth rate of 10.84 g C/(m^(2)•a).The multi-year average NPP in the GPUA was 484.83 g C/(m^(2)•a),with higher values in the southwestern Qinling Mountains and lower values in the central and northeastern cropland and built-up *** average coefficient of variation of NPP in the GPUA was 0.14,indicating a relatively stable state overall,but 72.72%of the study area showed weak anti-persistence,suggesting that NPP in most areas may have declined in the short *** to XGBoost-SHAP analyses,elevation,land use type and precipitation were identified as the main driving factors of *** precipitation and higher temperatures promote NPP growth,whereas extreme climates,high population density,and nighttime lighting inhibit *** study has important theoretical and practical significance for achieving regional sustainable development,offers a scientific basis for formulating effective ecological protection and restoration strategies,and promotes green,coordinated,and sustainable development in the GPUA.

Impact of Hard Segment Structures on Fatigue Threshold of Casti

The fatigue resistance of casting polyurethane(CPU)is crucial in various sectors,such as construction,healthcare,and the automotive *** its importance,no studies have reported on the fatigue threshold of *** study employed an advanced Intrinsic Strength Analyzer(ISA)to evaluate the fatigue threshold of CPUs,systematically exploring the effects of three types of isocyanates(PPDI,NDI,TDI)that contribute to hard segment structures based on the cutting *** multiple advanced characterization techniques(XRD,TEM,DSC,AFM),the results indicate that PPDI-based polyurethane exhibits the highest fatigue threshold(182.89 J/m^(2))due to a highest phase separation and a densely packed spherulitic structure,although the hydrogen bonding degree is the lowest(48.3%).Conversely,NDI-based polyurethane,despite having the high hydrogen bonding degree(53.6%),exhibits moderate fatigue performance(122.52 J/m^(2)),likely due to a more scattered ***-based polyurethane,with the highest hydrogen bonding degree(59.1%)but absence of spherulitic structure,shows the lowest fatigue threshold(46.43 J/m^(2)).Compared to common rubbers(NR,NBR,EPDM,BR),the superior fatigue performance of CPU is attributed to its well-organized microstructure,polyurethane possesses a higher fatigue threshold due to its high phase separation degree and orderly and dense spherulitic structure which enhances energy dissipation and reduces crack propagation.

The La_(1.7)Pr_(0.3)Mg_(16)Ni hydrogen storage alloy was prepared by medium-frequency induction melting,and then the composite hydrogen storage alloy powder of La_(1.7)Pr_(0.3)Mg_(16)Ni+x wt.%(x=0,2,4,and 6)graphene was prepared by ball milling for 10 *** effect of the addition of graphene on the activation and hydrogen de/absorption properties of La_(1.7)Pr_(0.3)Mg_(16)Ni alloy was *** result demonstrated that these composite alloys were composed of La_(2)Mg_(17),La_(2)Ni_(3),and Mg_(2)Ni *** saturated hydrogen absorption,it was composed of LaH_(3),Mg_(2)NiH_(4),and MgH_(2)phases,while during the dehydrogenation process,it was composed of LaH_(3),Mg,and Mg_(2)Ni *** addition of graphene can help get a more homogeneous granule after ball milling and accelerate the first activation of dehydrogenation/hydrogen *** hydrogen release activation energy of the alloys first decreases and then increases as the graphene content increases from x=0 wt.%to x=6 wt.%.The minimum activation energy of the composite hydrogen storage alloy is 51.22 kJ mol^(-1) when x=4 wt.%.

Intelligent field monitoring system for cruciferous vegetable pests using yellow sticky board images and an improved Cascade R-CNN

Cruciferous vegetables are important edible vegetable ***,they are susceptible to various pests during their growth process,which requires real-time and accurate monitoring of these pests for pest forecasting and scientific *** yellow sticky boards is a common way to monitor and trap those pests which are attracted to the yellow *** achieve real-time,low-cost,intelligent monitoring of these vegetable pests on the boards,we established an intelligent monitoring system consisting of a smart camera,a web platform and a pest detection algorithm deployed on a *** the operator sets the monitoring preset points and shooting time of the camera on the system platform,the camera in the field can automatically collect images of multiple yellow sticky boards at fixed places and times every *** pests trapped on the yellow sticky boards in vegetable fields,Plutella xylostella,Phyllotreta striolata and flies,are very small and susceptible to deterioration and breakage,which increases the difficulty of model *** solve the problem of poor recognition due to the small size and breaking of the pest bodies,we propose an intelligent pest detection algorithm based on an improved Cascade R-CNN model for three important cruciferous crop *** algorithm uses an overlapping sliding window method,an improved Res2Net network as the backbone network,and a recursive feature pyramid network as the neck *** results of field tests show that the algorithm achieves good detection results for the three target pests on the yellow sticky board images,with precision levels of 96.5,92.2 and 75.0%,and recall levels of 96.6,93.1 and 74.7%,respectively,and an F_(1) value of *** with other algorithms,our algorithm has a significant advantage in its ability to detect small target *** accurately obtain the data for the newly added pests each day,a two-stage pest matching algorithm was *** algorithm performed well and achieved
