Influence of Dietary Administration of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate （HMB） on the Innate Immunity and Resistance against Bacterial Infections in Pikeperch （Sander lucioperca）

The present study examined the influence of leucine metabolite β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate （HMB） on the nonspecific cellular and humoral defence mechanisms and protection against Yersinia ruckeri and Aeromonas salmonicida in juvenile pikeperch （Sander lucioperca）. The fish was fed with a commercial trout pellets, containing either 0 （control group） or 50 mg HMB kg^-1 body weight day^-1 （HMB fed group）. After four weeks feeding, 20 pikeperch from each group were anaesthetised and blood and pronephros samples were taken. The levels of the following immunological parameters were measured： respiratory burst activity of phagocytes, potential killing activity of phagocytes, lymphocytes proliferation stimulated by concanavaline A or lipopolisaccharide, lysozyme activity in serum, ceruloplasmin activity in serum, total protein in serum and total immunoglobulin （Ig） level in serum. A disease challenge test using Yersinia ruckeri or Aeromonas salmonicida was conducted after 4 weeks of feeding. The levels of all immunological parameters excluding ceruloplasmin activity and total protein in serum were statistically significantly higher （P 〈 0.05） in the HMB treated group compared to the control group. Feeding with HMB has led to a significant decrease in the mortality after the challenge trial with Y. ruckeri （30% lower mortality than in the control group） and with theA. salmonicida （40% lower mortality than in the control group）. The current study strongly suggests that feeding pikeperch with HMB in dose 50 mg kg^-1 body weight day^-1 may improve the innate immunity and decrease the mortality rates after experimental infection with pathogenic bacteria Y. ruckeri and A. salmonicida.

This paper presents non-linear and linear models of flow system of laboratory stand (semi-industrial scale) with pressurized fluidized bed boiler. The non-linear model belongs to the class of lumped parameter models. The linear model was obtained experimentally using a novel method for design of control systems in industrial plants - MIKOZ. This study has connection with comparison of various methods of mathematical modeling of flow systems frequently encountered in power equipment.

Crossover to PDT after the unsuccessful micropulse laser treatment of central serous chorioretinopathy

Purpose:Subthreshold micropulse laser(SML)and photodynamic therapy(PDT)are among the most effective therapeutic modalities applied to central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR).This study aimed to evaluate the ef-ficacy and durability of PDT in CSCR cases unresponsive to at least two SML ***:The study included 26 consecutive eyes of 24 patients(21 males and three females)with chronic *** all cases,a lack of reduction in subretinal fluid(SRF)levels was noted after at least two consecutive SML *** parameters of best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and spectral domain optical coherence tomog-raphy(SD-OCT)were evaluated at baseline and 1,3 and 12 months ***:The mean duration of symptoms in the group was 53.81±39.48 months,the mean age of the patients was 49.26±12.91 years,and the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness(SFCT)was 572.11±116.21 *** resorption of SRF was observed in 21 out of 26 eyes(80.77%)at 1 month and sustained in 18 cases(69.23%)at 12 *** 12 months,in the sustained group,BCVA improved significantly from 0.39±0.18 to 0.19±0.2 logMAR(P=0.01),central subfoveal thickness(CST)reduced from 316.44±75.83 mm to 197.67±22.99 mm(P<0.0001),and SFCT reduced from 579.28 mm to 446.78 mm(P<0.0001).Conclusions:PDT provides the opportunity for the successful treatment of CSCR unresponsive to SML *** are possible even in cases with a long duration of symptoms and significant alterations in retinal ***,PDT should be considered for patients with prominently increased choroidal thickness.

What's new in hepatitis C virus infections in children?

The number of hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection cases is relatively low in children. This low number may be connected with the lack of screening tests and the asymptomatic course of infection. Currently,mother-toinfant transmission is the most common cause of HCV infection amongst children in developed countries. It is important to introduce routine screening tests for HCV in pregnant women. The risk of vertical transmission of HCV is estimated at approximately 5%(3%-10%). Currently,we do not have HCV transmission prevention methods. Some factors could potentially be eliminated by elective caesarean section. Currently,the method of prevention of perinatal HCV infection is the early identification and effective treatment of infections in young women in the preconception period. We describe genetic tests(IL-28 B single nucleotide polymorphisms) to identify children with an increased chance of spontaneous clearance or sustained virologic response achievement and vitamin D level as a potential predictor of treatment response in children. It is also important to develop non-invasive tests that can predict liver fibrosis. The existence of differences in the mechanisms leading to liver injury between children and adults creates new perspectives of action to reduce liver disease progression in children in the early years of life.

Impact of IL28B and OAS gene family polymorphisms on interferon treatment response in Caucasian children chronically infected with hepatitis B virus

AIM To investigate the impact of IL28 B and OAS gene polymorphisms on interferon treatment responses in children with chronic hepatitis *** We enrolled 52 children(between the ages of 4 and 18) with hepatitis B e antigen-negative chronic hepatitis B(CHB), who were treated with pegylated interferon alfa for 48 wk. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the OAS1(rs1131476), OAS2(rs1293747),OAS3(rs2072136), OASL(rs10849829) and IL28B(rs12979860, rs12980275 and rs8099917) genes were studied to examine their associations with responses to IFN treatment in paediatric patients. We adopted two criteria for the therapeutic response, achieving an hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA level < 2000 IU/m L and normalization of ALT activity(< 40 IU/L). To perform the analyses, we compared the patients in terms of achieving a partial response(PR) and a complete response(CR) upon measurement at the 24-wk posttreatment follow-up. RESULTS The PR and CR rates were 80.8% and 42.3%, respectively. Factors such as age, gender and liver histology had no impact on the type of response(partial or complete). A statistically significant relationship between higher baseline HBV DNA and ALT activity levels and lower rates of PR and CR was shown(P < 0.05). The allele association analysis revealed that only the IL-28 B rs12979860(C vs T) and IL28 B rs12980275(A vs G) markers significantly affected the achievement of PR(P = 0.021, OR = 3.3, 95%CI: 1.2-9.2 and P = 0.014, OR = 3.7, 95%CI: 1.3-10.1, respectively). However, in the genotype analysis, only IL-28 B rs12980275 was significantly associated with PR(AA vs AG-GG, P = 0.014, OR = 10.9, 95%CI: 1.3-93.9). The association analysis for CR showed that the TT genotype of IL28 B rs12979860 was present only in the no-CR group(P = 0.033) and the AA genotype of OASL rs10849829 was significantly more frequent in the noCR group(P = 0.044, OR = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.07-0.88). Kinetics of Reaction-Crystallization of Struvite in the Continuous Draft Tube Magma Type CrystallizersmInfluence of Different Internal Hydrodynamics

A laboratory-scale reaction-crystallization process of struvite synthesis from diluted water solution of Mg^2＋, NH^＋ 4 and PO3- ions was studied. The research covered the tests of two original constructions of continuous jet-pump Draft Tube Magma （DTM）-type crystallizers with internal circulation of suspension （upward/downward）. Interactions between constructional, hydrodynamic and kinetic factors were established and discussed. Nucleation and linear growth rates of struvite crystals were calculated on the basis of population density distribution. Kinetic model of idealized Mixed Suspension Mixed Product Removal （MSMPR） crystallizer considering the size-dependent growth mechanism was applied （Rojkowski hyperbolic equation）. For comparison purposes the kinetic data corre- sponded to a simpler, continuous draft tube-type crystallizer equipped with propeller agitator were analyzed. It was concluded that crystal product of larger size was withdrawn from the jet-pump DTM crystallizer of the descending flow of suspension in a mixing chamber.

Some parameters of coal methane system that cause very slow release of methane from virgin coal beds(CBM)

In some worldwide hard coal basins recovery of methane from virgin coal beds is difficult. In general,mentioned difficulties are related to geo-mechanical, petrographical and physical-chemical properties of coals in question, occurring for example in the Bowen Basin(Australia) or the Upper Silesian Coal Basin(Poland). Among numerous properties and parameters, the following are very essential: susceptibility of coal beds to deformation connected with coal stress state change and contemporary shrinkage of the coal matrix during methane desorption. Those adverse geo-mechanical and physical-chemical effects are accompanied by essential change of the porous coal structure, which under these disadvantageous conditions is very complex. This study aims to show difficulties, which occur in phase of recognition of the methane-reach coal deposit. Volume absorbed methane(not surface adsorbed) in sub-micropores having minimal size comparable with gas molecule diameter must possess energy allowing separation of the nodes and methane release to micropores.

Biologically-Inspired Water Propulsion System

Most propulsion systems of vehicles travelling in the aquatic environment are equipped with propellers. Observations of nature, however, show that the absolute majority of organisms travel through water using wave motion, paddling or using water jet power. Inspired by these observations of nature, an innovative propulsion system working in aquatic environment was developed. This paper presents the design of the water propulsion system. Particular attention was paid to the use of paddling techniques and water jet power. A group of organisms that use those mechanisms to travel through water was selected and analysed. The results of research were used in the design of a propulsion system modelled simultaneously on two methods of movement in the aquatic environment. A method for modelling a propulsion system using a combination of the two solutions and the result were described. A conceptual design and a prototype constructed based on the solution were presented. With respect to the solution developed, studies and analyses of selected parameters of the prototype were described.

Technical problems and non destructive testing of rock bolt support systems in mines
