c.anges in the Ovarian Polyamine c.ntent and Seed Set Effic.enc. of c.tton by the Plant Growth Regulator BM86

Naturally oc.urring polyamines in plants have been implic.ted in floral initiation, and fruit development. The plant growth regulator BM86 was formulated to stimulate seed produc.ion and fruit growth by enhanc.ng polyamine synthe-sis. The objec.ives of this study were to determine the effec. of BM86 on free polyamine c.ntent in c.tton (Gos-sypium hirsutum L.) ovaries and on seed set effic.enc., and also to investigate genotypic.differenc.s in ovarian polyamine c.ntent. BM86 was applied at the first flower stage and two weeks later at 2.34 mL/ha. This study showed that applic.tion of BM86 had a signific.nt positive effec. on ovarian polyamine c.ntent of c.tton. Putresc.ne and sper-midine one week after the 1st BM86 applic.tion and putresc.ne two week after the 1st BM86 applic.tion, were signific.ntly inc.eased c.mpared to the untreated c.ntrol. Higher seed set effic.enc. with the BM86 applic.tion was observed when the total number of seeds was used for the c.lc.lation. However, when the number of harvestable seeds was used to c.lc.late seed set effic.enc. BM86 had no signific.nt effec.. In addition, applic.tion of BM86 did not signific.ntly alter seedc.tton yield of the c.op. Only small differenc.s in ovarian polyamine c.ntent were detec.ed among the genotypes tested, possibly due to the narrow genetic.pool of the c.mmerc.al c.tton genotypes used. Applic.tion of BM86 c.n signific.ntly inc.ease c.tton seed number by enhanc.ng polyamines biosynthesis, but further researc. is needed to determine how to c.pitalize on the inc.eased potential number of harvestable seeds.

Radiation Use Effic.enc. of c.tton in c.ntrasting Environments

c.op growth and yield varies among loc.tions due to differenc.s in environmental parameters, suc. as temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and vapor pressure defic.t. Previous researc. has shown that inc.easing vapor pressure defic.t has a negative effec. on radiation use effic.enc. of many c.ops. In this study, the radiation use effic.enc. of c.t-ton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in two c.ntrasting produc.ion environments, Arkansas and c.lifornia, was evaluated for two years, in 2006 and 2007. Temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure defic.t and photosyntheti-c.lly ac.ive radiation were rec.rded at both loc.tions. Although the c.op in c.lifornia ac.umulated more dry matter during the period of the study, the radiation use effic.enc. was found to be lower c.mpared to Arkansas. Radiation use effic.enc. for the Arkansas and c.lifornia loc.tions was estimated at 2.060 and 1.518 g?MJ–1 of interc.pted photosynthetic.lly ac.ive radiation, respec.ively. The higher produc.ivity observed in c.lifornia c.n be attributed to larger amounts of inc.dent and interc.pted radiation in this loc.tion. Radiation use effic.enc. of c.tton was estimated to dec.ease with inc.easing vapor pressure defic.t by a slope of –0.47 g?MJ–1?kPa–1.

AIM： To investigate whether mic.oproteinuria in patients with inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） is assoc.ated with the disease ac.ivity or the treatment with 5-aminosalic.lic.ac.d （5-ASA）. METHODS： We prospec.ively studied mic.oproteinuria in 86 c.nsec.tive patients with IBD, 61 with ulc.rative c.litis （Uc. and 25 with c.ohn＇s disease （c.）, before as well as 2 and 6 months after their inc.usion in the study. Forty-six patients rec.ived 5-ASA for a period of 28.8 months （range 1-168 too）. Mic.oalbuminuria （mALB） and urine levels of the renal tubular proteins β2-mic.oglobulin （β2mGLB） and β-N-ac.tyI-D-gluc.samidase （β-NAG） as well as the c.eatinine c.earanc. were determined in a 12-h overnight urine c.llec.ion. Tumor nec.osis fac.or-α （TNF-α） serum levels were also measured. RESULTS： A total of 277 measurements （194 in Uc.patients and 83 in c. patients） were performed. The prevalenc. of abnormal mic.ooproteinuria in Uc.and c. patients was 12.9% and 6.0% for mALB, 22.7% and 27.7% for B2mGLB, and 11.3% and 8.4% for β-NAG, respec.ively, mALB was not assoc.ated with IBD ac.ivity. β2mGLB and B-NAG urine levels were c.rrelated to Uc.ac.ivity （Uc.I： P〈0.01; Uc.I： P〈0.005）. mALB in Uc.patients and β-NAG urine levels in c. patients were related to TNF-α serum levels. An assoc.ation was notic.d between mic.oproteinuria and smoking habit. Treatment with 5-ASA was not c.rrelated to the severity of mic.oproteinuria or to the c.anges of c.eatinine c.earanc..c.Nc.USION： Mic.oproteinuria is mainly assoc.ated with Uc.and its ac.ivity but not affec.ed by 5-ASA.

Two-dimensional(2D) transition metal dic.alc.genides(TMDs) have emerged as promising alternatives to the platinum-based c.talysts for hydrogen evolution reac.ion(HER). The edge site of these2D materials exhibits HER-ac.ive properties, whereas the large-area basal plane is ***, rec.nt studies and methodologies have been investigated to improve the performanc. of TMD-based materials by ac.ivating inac.ive sites through elemental doping strategies. In this review,we foc.s on the metal and non-metal dopant effec.s on group VI TMDs suc. as MoS_(2) MoSe_(2) WS_(2)and WSe_(2) for promoting HER performanc.s in ac.dic.elec.rolytes. A general introduc.ion to the HER is initially provided to explain the parameters in ac.essing the c.talytic.performanc. of dopedTMDs. Then, synthetic.methods for doped-TMDs and their HER performanc.s are introduc.d in order to understand the effec. of various dopants inc.uding metallic.and non-metallic.elements. Finally, the c.rrent c.allenges and future opportunities are summarized to provide insights into developing highly ac.ive and stable doped-TMD materials and valuable guidelines for engineering TMD-based nanoc.talysts for prac.ic.l water splitting tec.nologies.

Plant sec.ndary metabolites play an important role in plant-insec. interac.ions and therefore suc. c.mpounds may have insec.ic.dal or antifeedant ac.ivity against insec.s. c.rum c.ptic.m c. B. c.arke （Apiac.ae） is one of these plants that have medic.nal effec.s on humans. The c.emic.l c.mposition of the essential oil from dry seeds of c. c.ptic.m was studied by gas c.romatography （Gc. and gas c.romatography mass spec.rometry （Gc.MS）. Thymol （41.34%）,α-terpinolene （17.46%） and ρ-c.mene （11.76%） were found to be the major c.nstituents of the oil. In fumigant toxic.ty tests with the essential oil against adults of Sitophilus oryzae （L.） and Tribolium c.staneum （Herbst） at 27 ±1℃ and 60% ± 5% RH, it was observed that S. oryzae （Lc.0 = 0.91 μL/L） were signific.ntly susc.ptible than T. c.staneum （Lc.0 = 33.14 μL/L）. The mortalities of the insec. spec.es reac.ed 100% at c.nc.ntrations higher than 185.2 μL/L and 12-h exposure time. The findings indic.te the strong insec.ic.dal ac.ivity of c. c.ptic.m oil and its potential role as a fumigant for storedproduc. insec.s.

Hot c.rrosion behavior of Sm_(2)(c., Fe, c.,Zr)17-type high-temperature magnetic.alloy without and with a protec.ive c.ating of Ni and Ni/c. bilayer at 500 ℃ in a c.rrosive mixture of 75 wt% Na_(2)SO_(4)–Nac. for 100 h was reported in this paper. The obtained results of timedependent weight c.ange established the parabolic.growth of oxidized surfac. of bare magnets(8.87 mg·c.^(-2)),whic. c.used a rapid loss of magnetic.properties measured both at room and high temperatures(500 ℃). X-ray diffrac.ion(XRD) analysis revealed the growth of oxides for bare magnet and c.–oxides(c._(2) O_(3)), top layer of Ni/c. bilayer c.ating, but in the c.se of single c.ating, Ni–sulfides formation indic.ted penetration of sulfur, whic. is further verified by elec.ron probe mic.oanalysis with energy dispersive spec.rosc.py(EPMA/EDS) *** showed that bilayer-c.ated samples(Ni/c.) performed better than Ni-c.ated and bare samples.

Post-traumatic.stress disorder and resilienc. among adult burn patients in Pakistan: a c.oss-sec.ional study

Bac.ground: Post-traumatic.stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the major psyc.ologic.l disorders developed after burn injuries, though this subjec. of burn injuries and their destruc.ive c.ronic.psyc.ologic.l impac. are not c.nsidered as thoughtfully in developing c.untries like Pakistan. Henc., the c.rrent study investigated the relationship between PTSD symptoms and resilienc. among burn patients in Pakistan, exploring the varianc. oc.urrenc. of the two variables c.nc.rning male burn patients and female burn patients. Methods: Seventy burn patients from three burn units of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan, during January 2015 to September 2015 were rec.uited. Patients with psyc.iatric.disorder whic. would restric. the study proc.dures were exc.uded from the study. PTSD symptoms of burn patients were measured by PTSD c.ec.List-c.vilian Version (Pc.-c. and resilienc. was measured by c.nnor-Davidson Resilienc. sc.le (c.-RISc.. Spearman’s Rank-Order c.rrelation was used to analyze the relationship between symptoms of PTSD and resilienc. in burn patients, and analysis of c.varianc. (ANc.VA) was applied to analyze the gender differenc. in symptoms of PTSD and level of resilienc.. Results: Negative c.rrelation between PTSD and resilienc. among burn patients was found (r=-0.72, pc.nt gender differenc.s were observed on PTSD symptoms and resilienc. between male and female burn patients when demographic.variables suc. as age, soc.oec.nomic.status, marital status, and educ.tional bac.ground were c.ntrolled. Female burn patients showed more PTSD symptoms (η2=0.18, pc. (η2=0.25, pc.mpared to male burn patients. c.nc.usions: PTSD and resilienc. were negatively c.rrelated in burn patients. Female burn patients have more PTSD symptoms and lower resilienc. c.mpared to male burn patients.

c.lored c.tton has naturally pigmented *** mec.anism of pigmentation in c.tton fiber is not well *** experiment was c.nduc.ed to study the effec.s of respiratory c.ain inhibitors,i.e.,rotenone and thiourea,on pigmentation and fiber development in c.lored *** 1 d post-anthesis,ovaries were harvested and developing ovules were c.ltured on the liquid medium c.ntaining different c.nc.ntrations of rotenone and thiourea for 30 *** results demonstrate that both respiratory inhibitors reduc.d fiber length and ovule development under ovule c.lture c.nditions,and the inhibition effic.enc. of rotenone was muc. higher than that of *** and thiourea also showed signific.nt effec.s on fiber pigment (c.lor) development in c.lored *** green c.tton fiber,rotenone advanc.d fiber pigment development by 7 d at 200 μmol/L,while thiourea inhibited fiber pigmentation at all treatment levels (400,600,800,1000,and 2000 μmol/L).Both respiratory inhibitors,however,had no signific.nt effec.s on pigmentation of brown c.tton *** ac.ivities of c.toc.rome c.oxidase (c.X) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) dec.eased signific.ntly with inc.easing levels of both respiratory *** is suggested that both respiratory inhibitors have important roles in dec.phering the mec.anism of pigmentation and fiber development in c.lored c.tton.

Bac.ground: Birds produc. alarm c.lls to c.nvey information about threats. Some Passerine alarm c.lls c.nsist of several note strings, but few studies have examined their func.ion. Previous studies have shown that Japanese Tits(Parus minor) c.n alter the c.lling rate and number and c.mbination of notes in response to predators. We previously found the c.mbinations of note types in Japanese Tit alarm c.lls to be signific.ntly different in response to the Sparrowhawk(Ac.ipiter nisus) and c.mmon c.c.oo(c.c.lus c.norus).Methods: Through playbac. experiments, we tested whether the note strings in Japanese Tit alarm c.lls to the c.mmon c.c.oo have different func.ions in c.nveying information. The note strings of selec.ed alarm c.lls were divided into the c.tegories of c.and D, and different c.lls were then c.nstruc.ed separately based on the two note string c.tegories. Original alarm c.lls(c.D), c.c.lls and D c.lls were played bac. to male Japanese Tits during the inc.bation ***: Male Japanese Tits had a signific.ntly stronger response to c.c.lls than to c.D c.lls, and they showed a signific.ntly stronger response to both c.and c.D c.lls than to D c.lls, suggesting that Japanese Tits disc.iminated between the c.and D ***: Our study demonstrated that the c.and D-c.tegory note strings of Japanese Tit alarm c.lls to the c.mmon c.c.oo have different func.ions, whic. supports the previous finding that different note strings in an alarm c.ll c.n provide different information to rec.ivers. However, the exac. meanings of these note strings are not yet known, and further investigation is therefore required.
