Magnetospheric Boundary Layer Structure and Dynamics as Seen From Cluster and Double Star Measurements

In this review,we discuss the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheric LowLatitude Boundary Layer(LLBL)based on recent results from multi-satellite missions Cluster and Double *** boundary layer,adjacent to the magnetopause on the magnetospheric side,usually consists of a mixture of plasma of magnetospheric and magnetosheath origins,and plays an important role in the transfer of mass and energy from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and subsequent magnetospheric *** southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field(IMF)conditions,this boundary layer is generally considered to be formed as a result of the reconnection process between the IMF and magnetospheric magnetic field lines at the dayside magnetopause,and the structure and plasma properties inside the LLBL can be understood in terms of the time history since the reconnection *** northward IMF conditions,the LLBL is usually thicker,and has more complex structure and *** observations confirm that the LLBL observed at the dayside can be formed by single lobe reconnection,dual lobe reconnection,or by sequential dual lobe reconnection,as well as partially by localized cross-field *** LLBL magnetic topology and plasma signatures inside the different sub-layers formed by these processes are discussed in this *** role of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the formation of the LLBL at the flank magnetopause is also ***,we conclude that the LLBL observed at the flanks can be formed by the combination of processes,(dual)lobe reconnection and plasma mixing due to non-linear Kelvin-Helmholtz waves.

William R. Downs, Ⅲ, known as Dong Weilin to many friends, died a relatively young man ( 1950 ～ 2002) at the height of his career in *** career began at the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1975. One of his early tasks was the preparation of Triassic cynodonts from Antarctica for Edwin ***, then Curator Emeritus of the American Museum of Natural History and Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Museum of Northern Arizona (Colbert and Kitching, 1977). Will prepared the Early jurassic armored ornithischian Scutellosaurus for Colbert (1981), and he collected and prepared a skull of Pentaceratops from the Cretaceous of the San juan Basin (Rowe et al., 1981 ).One of his early ventures into screen-washing was near the Pentaceratops site in the San juan Basin (Flynn, 1986) where mammals were poorly represented. In the mid-1980' s, Will left the Museum of Northern Arizona to become affiliated with Northern Arizona University, also in Flagstaff. In addition, he was briefly employed to revamp the fossil preparation laboratories at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, during which time he joined in excavations of a large series of small primitive ornithopods in Texas (Winkler et al.,1988). He maintained an office at the Bilby Research Center, and then the Department of Geology,at Northern Arizona University until the time of his death

Effects of Weight Loss on Pericardial Fat and Left Ventricular Mass Assessed with Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Morbid Obesity

Background: Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality. Significant weight loss has beneficial effects on left ventricular structure, in particular on regression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). We therefore evaluated the consequences of significant weight loss on left ventricular morphology, hemodynamics and pericardial fat. Methods: We performed volumetric cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging before and after significant weight loss due to laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). CMR was used to measure cardiac mass, volume and function, as well as to quantify pericardial fat. Results: Eleven patients (age 40.5 ± 10 yrs, body mass index 42.5 ± 3.9 kg/m2) underwent CMR imaging before and a median 15.4 months after gastric banding. The BMI declined by 9.3 ± 3.3 kg/m2 (p Discussion: Significant weight loss in obesity is accompanied by a marked regression of LVH, with no apparent change in cardiac volume or function. The local effect of a diminished amount of pericardiac fat tissue may be more important than absolute weight loss with respect to the regression of LVH in obesity.

Emergence of mass in the gauge sector of QCD

It is currently widely accepted that gluons,while massless at the level of the fundamental QCD Lagrangian,acquire an effective mass through the non-Abelian implementation of the classic Schwinger *** key dynamical ingredient that triggers the onset of this mechanism is the formation of composite massless poles inside the fundamental vertices of the *** poles enter the evolution equation of the gluon propagator and nontrivially affect the way the Slavnov-taylor identities of the vertices are resolved,inducing a smoking-gun displacement in the corresponding Ward *** this article,we present a comprehensive review of the pivotal concepts associated with this dynamical scenario,emphasizing the synergy between functional methods and lattice simulations and highlighting recent advances that corroborate the action of the Schwinger mechanism in QCD.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
