Increased urbanisation,economic growth,and long-term climate variability have made both the UK and China more susceptible to urban and river flooding,putting people and property at increased *** paper presents a review of the current flooding challenges that are affecting the UK and China and the actions that each country is undertaking to tackle these *** emphases in this paper are laid on(1)learning from previous flooding events in the UK and China,and(2)which management methodologies are commonly used to reduce flood *** paper concludes with a strategic research plan suggested by the authors,together with proposed ways to overcome identified knowledge gaps in flood *** briefly comprise the engagement of all stakeholders to ensure a proactive approach to land use planning,early warning systems,and water-sensitive urban design or redesign through more effective policy,multi-level flood models,and data driven models of water quantity and quality.

The wild population of the African lion Panthera leo continues to decline, requiring alternate conservation programs to be considered. One such program is ex situ reintroduction. Prior to release, longterm monitoring and assessment of behavior is required to determine whether prides and coalitions behave naturally and are sufficiently adapted to a wild environment. Social network analysis （SNA） can be used to provide insight into how the pride as a whole and individuals within it, function. Our study was conducted upon 2 captive-origin prides who are part of an ex situ reintroduction program, and 1 wild pride of African lion. Social interactions were collected at all occurrence for each pride and categorized into greet, social grooming, play, and aggression. Betweenness centrality showed that offspring in each pride were central to the play network, whereas degree indicated that adults received （indegree） the greatest number of overall social interactions, and the adult males of each pride were least likely to initiate （outdegree） any interactions. Through the assessment of individual centrality and degree values, a social keystone adult female was identified for each pride. Social network results indicated that the 2 captive-origin prides had formed cohesive social units and possessed relationships and behaviors comparable with the wild pride for the studied behaviors. This study provided the first SNA comparison between captive-bred origin and a wild pride of lions, providing valuable information on individual and pride sociality, critical for determining the success of prides within an ex situ reintroduction program.

Effects of semi-rigid ankle orthoses on tasks related to athletic performance following a bout of fatiguing exercise

Despite the perceived protection of semi-rigid ankle orthoses (SRAO), coaches and clinicians are often concerned with the restriction that the SRAO may pose on functional performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SRAO on performance-selected tasks, following fatiguing activity. Twenty active, college-age subjects (22.7 ± 1.2 years;weight 71.7 ± 13.0 kg;height 171.7 ± 9.4 cm), without lower extremity trauma within 2 years, consented participation. Randomized trials for balance (star excursion balance test (SEBT)), agility (shuttle run (SR)), and power (vertical jump (VJ)) were compared between 4 conditions [fatigued, braced (fb);fatigued, un-braced (FUB);non-fatigued, braced (Nfb);non-fatigued, un-braced (NFUB)]. Participants were bilaterally fitted with a well-known, commercially available SRAO for all braced trials. Two Wingate supramaximal exercise bouts were used as the fatiguing protocol. RMANOVA was performed for each functional test to determine main effects (SPSS, IL;α = 0.05 for all tests). No main effects for VJ & SR were observed under any of the bracing conditions. Main effect for bracing was observed for the SEBT. Tukey pairwise comparisons revealed that there were significant increases in distance reached for the posterior-medial direction (Nfb = 0.91 cm ± 0.2;fb = 0.95 ± 0.2;p = 0.046) and medial direction (Nfb = 0.74 cm ± 0.1;fb = 0.79 ± 0.1;p = 0.039) during the braced conditions. Although subjects reported that the SRAO restricted ROM during most SEBT directions involving inversion and eversion, overall performance was not hindered by the application of the brace. Further, the only main effects observed with functional performance involved increases in SEBT that could likely be attributed to comfort and confidence of motion while wearing an ankle device. It was concluded that articulated SRAO effectively limits ankle mobility, but does not appear to hinder athletic performance following a fatiguing bout.

[Correction added after online publication 3 August 2010 - ’prelate’ has been changed to ’pre-late’ throughout the text].Using apatite fission track and(U-Th-Sm)/Ⅱe thermochronology,we report the low-temperature thermal history of the Mesozoic Micang Shan Foreland Basin system,central *** system,comprising the Hannan Dome hinterland,the northern Sichuan Foreland Basin and the intermediate frontal thrust belt(fb),shares a common boundary with three major tectonic terrains Mesozoic Qinling-Dabie Orogen,Mesozoic Sichuan Foreland Basin and Cenozoic elevated Tibetan *** show:(1) a relatively rapid pre-late Cretaceous cooling episode in the Hannan Dome;(2) a mid-Cenozoic cooling phase(ca.50℃at ca.30±5 Ma) within the northern Sichuan Basin;and(3) possible late Cenozoic cooling(ca.25℃at ca.16±4 Ma) within the Hannan Dome-fb,a phase which has also been reported previously from adjacent *** pre-late Cretaceous cooling episode in the Hannan Dome is attributed to coeval tectonism in nearby regions. Mid-Cenozoic cooling in the northern Sichuan Basin can possibly be attributed to either one of or a combination of shortening of the basin,onset of the Asian monsoon and drainage adjustment of the Yangtze River system,all of which are related to growth of the Tibetan *** late Cenozoic cooling in the hinterland and nearby regions is also probably related to the northeastward growth of the Tibetan ***,previous studies suggest a northeastward propagation for onset of cooling from the eastern Tibetan Plateau to western Qinling in response to northeastward lower crust flow from the central Tibetan *** timing of apparent late Cenozoic cooling in the Hannan Dome hinterland,at an intermediate locality,is not consistent with this trend,and supports a previous model suggesting northeastern growth of the Tibetan Plateau through reactivation of WE trending strike-slip faults.

目的与“不用针灸”对比,确定“使用针灸”的治疗方法对慢性头痛患者的头痛、健康状况及无病时间的影响。设计随机对照试验。试验场所英格兰和威尔士的开业医生诊所。受试对象 401位慢性头痛患者,主要是偏头痛患者。干预患者被随机分配进入针灸治疗组(在 3个月内接受12次针灸治疗)和对照组(接受常规治疗)。主要结果测定指标治疗前、治疗后3个月及12个月对头痛积分,SF-36健康状况及用药量进行评估。每3个月对治疗方法作1次评估。头痛积分即判定疗效的主要终点指标。结果针灸组治疗后12个月的头痛积分(针灸组161例患者,平均头痛积分为16．2,标准差 13．7,比治疗前减少34％)比对照组低(对照组140 例患者,平均头痛积分为22．3,标准差17．0,比治疗前减少16％)。两种方法调整后的差异为4．6 (95％可信区间为2．2-7．0;P=0．0002)。对于包含缺失数据的灵敏度分析,该结果也是肯定的。针灸组的患者每年少头痛22(8-38)天。尽管达到统计学差异的项目仅有生理功能、精力和健康改变等,SF-36的资料也有利于针灸组。与对照组相比,针灸组的患者减少了15％的服药量(P=0．02), 减少了25％的就诊量(P=0．10),同时减少15％的病休时间(P=0．2)。结论针灸在初级保健中用于治疗慢性头痛, 特别是偏头痛,可以产生与临床相关的持久益处。应当考虑扩大英国国家医疗保险体系中针灸治疗的范围。
