A signal-substrate match in the substrate-borne component of a multimodal courtship display

The environment can impose strong limitations on the efficacy of signal transmission. In particular, for vibratorycommunication, the signaling environment is often extremely heterogeneous at small scales. Nevertheless, natural selection isexpected to select for signals well-suited for effective transmission. Here, we test for substrate-dependent signal efficacy in thewolf spider Schizocosa stridulans Stratton 1991. We first explore the transmission characteristics of this important signaling modalityby playing recorded substrate-borne signals through three different substrates (leaf litter, pine litter, and red clay) andmeasuring the propagated signal. We found that the substrate-borne signal of S. stridulans attenuates the least on leaf litter, thesubstrate upon which the species is naturally found. Next, by assessing mating success with artificially muted and non-mutedmales across different signaling substrates (leaf litter, pine litter, and sand), we explored the relationship between substrate-bornesignaling and signaling substrate for mating success. We found that muted males were unsuccessful in obtaining copulations regardlessof substrate, while mating success was dependent on the signaling substrate for non-muted males. For non-muted males,more males copulated on leaf litter than any other substrate. Taken together, these results confirm the importance of substrate-borne signaling in S. stridulans and suggest a match between signal properties and signal efficacy - leaf litter transmits thesignal most effectively and males are most successful in obtaining copulations on leaf litter [current Zoology 56 (3): 370-378,2010].

"Synthetic"allopolyploids recreated by interspecific hybridization play an important role in providing novel genomic variation for crop *** synthetic allopolyploids often undergo rapid genomic structural variation(SV).However,how such SV arises,is inherited and fixed,and how it affects important traits,has rarely been comprehensively and quantitively studied in advanced generation synthetic lines.A better understanding of these processes will aid breeders in knowing how to best utilize synthetic allopolyploids in breeding ***,we analyzed three genetic mapping populations(735 DH lines)derived from crosses between advanced synthetic and conventional Brassica napus(rapeseed)lines,using whole-genome sequencing to determine genome *** observed high tolerance of large structural variants,particularly toward the telomeres,and preferential selection for balanced homoeologous exchanges(duplication/deletion events between the A and c genomes resulting in retention of gene/chromosome dosage between homoeologous chromosome pairs),including stable events involving whole chromosomes("pseudoeuploidy").Given the experimental design(all three populations shared a common parent),we were able to observe that parental SV was regularly inherited,showed genetic hitchhiking effects on segregation,and was one of the major factors inducing adjacent novel and larger ***,novel SV occurred at low frequencies with no significant impacts on observed fertility and yield-related traits in the advanced generation synthetic ***,incorporating genome-wide SV in linkage mapping explained significantly more genetic variance for *** results provide a framework for detecting and understanding the occurrence and inheritance of genomic SV in breeding programs,and support the use of synthetic parents as an important source of novel trait variation.

Reduction in cOVID-19 related resource loss and decline in prevalence of probable depression in chinese adults:an application of the conservation of Resource Theory

Qualitative Assessment of Postharvest Stomata and chloroplast Degradation in contrasting Abscission Resistant Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.)

Balsam fir is an important christmas tree species, especially in eastern canada. The natural christmas tree industry faces a challenge in postharvest needle abscission. Though there have been many studies describing the physiological triggers and consequences in postharvest balsam fir, there have been no studies describing morphological or ultrastructural changes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine changes in stomata and chloroplast of postharvest needles. Branches were collected from low and high needle abscission resistance balsam fir genotypes, placed in water, and displayed in typical household conditions for 11 weeks. Needle abscission, chlorophyll fluorescence, and water uptake were monitored throughout. Needles stomata and chloroplasts were examined under a scanning and transmission electron microscope, respectively, each week. All branches had increased abscission, decreased chlorophyll fluorescence, and decreased water uptake over time. Needle surfaces accumulated fungal hyphae, especially in stomata. chloroplasts demonstrated some dysfunction within two weeks, with notable decreases in chloroplast starch and increases in plastoglobulins. Within several weeks thylakoid membranes had been dismantled as chloroplasts transformed into gerontoplasts. All biophysical and structural changes were more pronounced in low needle abscission resistant genotypes. This research identifies a potential role for needle fungi in postharvest needle abscission and confirms the postharvest senescence of chloroplasts. Though it was previously speculated that chloroplasts must senesce postharvest, this study identifies how quickly this process occurs and that it occurs at different rates in contrasting genotypes.
