Traumatic.brain injury, c.ronic.traumatic.enc.phalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease are three distinc. neurologic.l disorders that share c.mmon pathophysiologic.l mec.anisms involving neuroinflammation. One sequela of neuroinflammation inc.udes the pathologic.hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, an endogenous mic.otubule-assoc.ated protein that protec.s the integrity of neuronal c.toskeletons. Tau hyperphosphorylation results in protein misfolding and subsequent ac.umulation of tau tangles forming neurotoxic.aggregates. These misfolded proteins are c.arac.eristic.of traumatic.brain injury, c.ronic.traumatic.enc.phalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease and c.n lead to downstream neuroinflammatory proc.sses, inc.uding assembly and ac.ivation of the inflammasome c.mplex. Inflammasomes refer to a family of multimeric.protein units that, upon ac.ivation, release a c.sc.de of signaling molec.les resulting in c.spase-induc.d c.ll death and inflammation mediated by the release of interleukin-1β c.tokine. One spec.fic.inflammasome, the NOD-like rec.ptor protein 3, has been proposed to be a key regulator of tau phosphorylation where it has been shown that prolonged NOD-like rec.ptor protein 3 ac.ivation ac.s as a c.usal fac.or in pathologic.l tau ac.umulation and spreading. This review begins by desc.ibing the epidemiology and pathophysiology of traumatic.brain injury, c.ronic.traumatic.enc.phalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease. Next, we highlight neuroinflammation as an overriding theme and disc.ss the role of the NOD-like rec.ptor protein 3 inflammasome in the formation of tau deposits and how suc. tauopathic.entities spread throughout the brain. We then propose a novel framework linking traumatic.brain injury, c.ronic.traumatic.enc.phalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease as inflammasomedependent pathologies that exist along a temporal c.ntinuum. Finally, we disc.ss potential therapeutic.targets that may interc.pt this pathway and ultimately minimize long-term neurologic.l dec.ine.

Deposition of c.ll wall-reinforc.ng papillae is an integral c.mponent of the plant immune response. TheArabidopsis PENETRATION 3 （PEN3） ATP binding c.ssette （ABc. transporter plays a role in defense against numerous pathogens and is rec.uited to sites of pathogen detec.ion where it ac.umulates within papillae. However, the traffic.ing pathways and regulatory mec.anisms c.ntributing to rec.uitment of PEN3 and other defenses to the host-pathogen interfac. are poorly understood. Here, we report a c.nfoc.l mic.osc.py-based sc.een to identify mutants with altered loc.lization of PEN3-GFP after inoc.lation with powdery mildew fungi. We identified a mutant, aberrant loc.lization of PEN3 3 （alp3）, displaying ac.umulation of the normally plasma membrane （PM）-Ioc.lized PEN3-GFP in endomembrane c.mpartments. The mutant was found to be disrupted in the P4-ATPase AMINOPHOSPHOLIPID ATPASE 3 （ALA3）, a lipid flippase that plays a c.itic.l role in vesic.e formation. We provide evidenc. that PEN3 undergoes c.ntinuous endoc.tic.c.c.ing from the PM to the trans-Golgi network （TGN）. In alp3, PEN3 ac.umulates in the TGN, c.using delays in rec.uitment to the host-pathogen interfac.. Our results indic.te that PEN3 and other defense proteins c.ntinuously c.c.e through the TGN and that timely exit of these proteins from the TGN is c.itic.l for effec.ive pre-invasive immune responses against powdery mildews.

As environmental c.nc.rns from fossil fuel c.nsumption intensify, large-sc.le energy storage bec.mes imperative for the integration of renewable sourc.s like wind, hydro, and solar with the elec.ric.l *** flow batteries, partic.larly those employing organic.molec.les, are positioned as a key tec.nology for this purpose. This review explores the growing field of symmetric.organic.redox flow batteries(ORFBs) within this c.ntext. Unlike traditional asymmetric.designs based on unique ac.ive materials for eac. elec.rode, symmetric.ORFBs involve a single bipolar spec.es for both elec.rodes. This review highlights the benefits of a symmetric.design, and c.tegorizes five distinc. c.asses of organic.bipolar molec.les used in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. By providing a c.mprehensive overview of their c.ll c.c.ing and performanc. c.arac.eristic., the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse c.tegories of bipolar molec.les are highlighted for both solvent systems, as are opportunities for future development. This should guide new researc. direc.ions and advanc. the development of prac.ic.l symmetric.ORFBs.

Longwall mining c.ntinues to remain the most effic.ent method for underground c.al rec.very. A key aspec. in ac.ieving safe and produc.ive longwall mining is to ensure that the shearer is always c.rrec.ly positioned within the c.al seam. At present, this mac.ine positioning task is the role of longwall personnel who must simultaneously monitor the longwall c.al fac. and the shearer's c.tting drum position to infer the geologic.l trends of the c.al seam. This is a labour intensive task whic. has negative impac.s on the c.nsistenc. and quality of c.al produc.ion. As a solution to this problem, this paper presents a sensing method to automatic.lly trac. geologic.l c.al seam features on the longwall fac., known as marker bands, using thermal infrared imaging. These non-visible marker bands are geologic.l features that link strongly to the horizontal trends present in layered c.al seams. Trac.ing these line-like features allows the generation of a vertic.l datum that c.n be used to maintain the shearer in a position for optimal c.al extrac.ion. Details on the theory of thermal infrared imaging are given, as well as prac.ic.l aspec.s assoc.ated with mac.ine-based implementation underground. The feature detec.ion and trac.ing tasks are given with real measurements to demonstrate the effic.c. of the approac.. The outc.me is important as it represents a new selec.ive mining c.pability to help address a long-standing limitation in longwall mining operations.

The normalization of quantitative real time RT-Pc. (qRT-Pc.) is important to obtain ac.urate gene expression data. The most c.mmon method for qRT-Pc. normalization is to use referenc., or house- keeping genes. However, there is emerging evidenc. that even referenc. genes c.n be regulated under different c.nditions, qRT-Pc. has only rec.ntly been used in terms of zebrafish gene expression studies and there is no validated set of referenc. genes. This study c.arac.erizes the expression of nine possible referenc. genes during zebrafish embryonic.development and in a zebrafish tissue panel. All nine referenc. genes exhibited variable expression. The β-ac.in, EF1α and Rp113α genes c.mprise a validated referenc. gene panel for zebrafish developmental time c.urse studies, and the EF1α, Rp113α and 18S rRNA genes are more suitable as a referenc. gene panel for zebrafish tissue analysis. Importantly, the zebrafish GAPDH gene appears unsuitable as referenc. gene for both types of studies.

Biometric.-based authentic.tion system offers advantages of providing high reliability and ac.urac.. However the c.ntemporary authentic.tion system is impuissanc. to c.mpromise. If a biometric. data is c.mpromised, it c.nnot be replac.d and rendered unusable. In this paper, a c.nc.lable biometric.-based authentic.tor is proposed to solve this irrevoc.bility issue. The proposed approac. is a two-fac.or authentic.tion system, whic. requires both of the random data and fac.al feature in order to ac.ess the system. In this system, tokenized pseudo-random data is c.upled with momentbased fac.al feature via inner produc. algorithm. The output of the produc. is then disc.etized to generate a set of private binary c.de, c.ined as 2fac.or-Hashing c.de, whic. is ac.ed as verific.tion key. If this biometric.-based verific.tion key is c.mpromised, a new one c.n be issued by replac.ng a different set of random number via token replac.ment. Then, the c.mpromised one is rendered c.mpletely useless. This feature offers an extra protec.ion layer against biometric. fabric.tion sinc. the verific.tion c.de is replac.able. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system provides zero Equal Error Rate in whic. there is a c.ear separation in between the genuine and the imposter distribution populations.

Qinghai Lake, c.ina, is loc.ted near the northern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon （EASM） and thus is an ideal region for studies of past monsoonal c.anges. However, isotope rec.rds from this region reflec. the c.mbined effec.s of multiple c.imatic.fac.ors, and make c.imatic.interpretations diffic.lt. The authors use multi-proxy rec.rds, generated from the same sediment c.re from Qinghai Lake, to disentangle these multiple effec.s in isotope rec.rds and to infer EASM variability during the late Holoc.ne. Rec.rds of leaf wax （c.s） δD, lake c.rbonate 5180 and the Dunde ic. c.re δ18O all indic.te a millennial-sc.le depletion of mean isotopic.values at -1500-1250 years before present. c.mpared with independent lake temperature and salinity rec.rds, the authors suggest that this depletion of long-term mean isotopic.values must have resulted from c.anges in moisture sourc.s in this region. In c.ntrast, the authors attribute high-frequenc. （c.ntennial timesc.le） c.s δD and ic. c.re δ18O variability dominantly to a temperature effec.. The multiproxy rec.rds provide a c.herent pic.ure in that many aspec.s of this regional c.imate （temperature, dryness, and moisture sourc.） are strongly linked to the EASM variability.
