Readmission after TIPS:an up-to-date landscape

Portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis is common and can lead to severe complications that are associated with decreased *** these complications,portal hypertensive bleeding and refractory ascites in many cases can be managed with the placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS).Current indications of TIPS placement include variceal hemorrhage refractory or recurrent to standard therapy with vasoactive drugs and endoscopic variceal ligation[1].Also,in carefully selected patients(***-Pugh class C cirrhosis with score 10-13 and Child Turcotte Pugh(CTP)class B with active bleeding on endoscopy),early TIPS(placed within 72 hours of admission)after vasoactive drugs and endoscopic band ligation improves *** intervention reduces the risk of rebleeding among this group of high-risk patients and is associated with increased survival[2].TIPS is also a treatment of choice in patients bleeding from cardiofundal varices(GOV2 and IGV1)and ectopic varices[1].Refractory ascites is also an indication for TIPS ***,its efficacy is controversial in this *** is clear that TIPS is associated with a better control of ascites than large-volume *** said,TIPS is followed by a greater incidence of hepatic *** results regarding the survival benefits of TIPS have emerged and are still a matter of intense debate[3].In summary,a careful selection of candidates for TIPS placement is necessary if refractory ascites is the indication for ***,TIPS can be detrimental in older patients with cardiopulmonary disease as well as in patients in CTP class C and higher Model for End Stage Liver Disease(MELD)*** has to be noted that most of the randomized trials evaluating survival of TIPS have been performed using bare stents[4].

Optimal thermoelectric figure of merit of Si/Ge core-shell nanowires

We investigate the thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency of Si and Ge nanowires, and in particular, that of Si/Ge core-shell nanowires. We show how the presence of a thin Ge shell on a Si core nanowire increases the overall figure of merit. We find the optimal thickness of the Ge shell to provide the largest figure of merit for the devices. We also consider Ge core/Si shell nanowires, and show that an optimal thickness of the Si shell does not exist, since the figure of merit is a monotonically decreasing function of the radius of the nanowire. Finally, we verify the empirical law relating the electron energy gap to the optimal working temperature that maximizes the efficiency of the device.

Adipose tissue lipolysis and remodeling during the transition period of dairy cows

Elevated concentrations of plasma fatty acids in transition dairy cows are significantly associated with increased disease susceptibility and poor lactation performance. The main source of plasma fatty acids throughout the transition period is lipolysis from adipose tissue depots. During this time, plasma fatty acids serve as a source of calories mitigating the negative energy balance prompted by copious milk synthesis and limited dry matter *** research has demonstrated that lipolysis in the adipose organ is a complex process that includes not only the activation of lipolytic pathways in response to neural, hormonal, or paracrine stimuli, but also important changes in the structure and cellular distribution of the tissue in a process known as adipose tissue remodeling. This process involves an inflammatory response with immune cell migration, proliferation of the cellular components of the stromal vascular fraction, and changes in the extracellular matrix. This review summarizes current knowledge on lipolysis in dairy cattle, expands on the new field of adipose tissue remodeling, and discusses how these biological processes affect transition cow health and productivity.

Impacts of fire severity and cattle grazing on early plant dynamics in old-growth Araucaria-Nothofagus forests

Background: Fire has historically shaped the dynamics of Araucaria araucana-Nothofagus pumilio forests in the Andean region of South America. Nevertheless, human disturbances and stronger drought events have resulted in increased occurrence and severity of wildfires. Regardless of their conservation relevance, the initial response to fire of Araucaria-Nothofagus forests has not been well documented. Through this research we tested the hypothesis that plant composition of Araucaria-Nothofagus forest after fire will initially differ in its recovery depending on fire severity, but over time, plant similarity will increase among areas with different levels of fire severity. The study was carried out in old-growth Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in south-central Chile(38°S) that were burned in 2015. We studied vegetation response to three levels of fire severity(low(LS), moderate(MS) and high(HS) severity), also including an adjacent unburned forest(UN), which were assessed one, two and three years after fire. We also evaluated the impact of cattle on plant recovery after fire. We measured species richness, abundance, plant diversity and origin of all vascular plant ***: Species richness and plant abundance responded differently to fire severity. Time-since-fire had a significant effect on plant richness and abundance. Plant composition within LS areas was similar to UN areas, but MS and HS areas were significantly less diverse compared to UN and LS. In absence of other major disturbances, similarity in plant composition tended to increase over time across the different levels of fire severity, becoming more similar to UN. We also found a synergetic effect of cattle and fire on species richness. Real-time cell analysis and heat shock protein gene expression in the TcA Tribofium castaneum cell line in response to environmental stress conditions

The rust red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum （Herbst, 1797）（Coleoptera： Tenebrionidae）, is a pest of stored grain and one of the most studied insect model species. Some of the previous studies involved heat response studies in terms of survival and heat shock protein expression, which are regulated to protect other proteins against environ- mental stress conditions. In the present study, we characterize the impedance profile with the xCELLigence Real-Time Cell Analyzer and study the effect of increased temperature in cell growth and viability in the cell line BCIRL-TcA-CLG 1 （TcA） of T castaneum. This novel system measures cells behavior in real time and is applied for the first time to insect cells. Additionally, cells are exposed to heat shock, increased salinity, acidic pH and UV-A light with the aim of measuring the expression levels of lisp27, Hsp68a, and Hsp83 genes. Results show a high thermotolerance of TeA in terms of cell growth and viability. This result is likely related to gene expression results in which a significant up-regulation of all studied Hsp genes is observed after 1 h of exposure to 40 ~C and UV light. All 3 genes show similar expression patterns, but Hsp27 seems to be the most affected. The results of this study validate the RTCA method and reveal the utility of insect cell lines, real-time analysis and gene expression studies to better understand the physiological response of insect cells, with potential applications in different fields of biology such as conservation biology and pest management.
