Monitoring concept for structural integration of PZT-fiber arrays in metal sheets:a numerical and experimental study

The technique joining by forming allows the structural integration of piezoceramic fibers into locally microstructured metal sheets without any elastic interlayers.A high-volume production of the joining partners causes in statistical deviations from the nominal dimensions.A numerical simulation on geometric process sensitivity shows that the deviations have a high significant influence on the resulting fiber stresses after the joining by forming operation and demonstrate the necessity of a monitoring *** this basis,the electromechanical behavior of piezoceramic array transducers is investigated experimentally before,during and after the joining *** piezoceramic array transducer consists of an arrangement of five electrical interconnected piezoceramic *** findings show that the impedance spectrum depends on the fiber stresses and can be used for in-process monitoring during the joining *** on the impedance values the preload state of the interconnected piezoceramic fibers can be specifically controlled and a fiber overload.

Ceramic materials are,due to their extraordinary properties such as high hardness and biocompatibility,increasingly used in micro *** research,the electro discharge machining of nonconductive ceramic materials using an electrically conducting starting layer(’ assisting electrode’) has been successfully adapted to ZrO *** the current study,tests are carried out to determine the minimum feature size of micro structures and the influences of vibration superposition on the outcome and process *** parameter settings are leading to a more stable and faster micro-EDM of nonconductive industrial grade ZrO ceramic ***,aspect ratios of 5 for micro bores with diameters of less than 200μm can be realized and pole structures of 50μm width and aspect ratio of 10 could be obtained.

Itaipu Binacional Hydro Power Plant Thrust Bearing Design Optimization for Higher Efficiency

Hydro generators installed in Itaipu Binacional power plant with 824/737 MVA rated output power (50/60 Hz) belong to the largest ones in the world. Among many unique features, the generators are equipped with the largest hydrodynamic thrust bearings ever built (external diameter 5,200 mm, axial load equals approximately 3,600 t). This paper is an attempt to propose a new thrust bearing design with the use of the state-of-the-art technologies and simulation techniques that demonstrate a reduction of friction power losses generated by the thrust bearing. This paper is divided into two parts. Within the first one, the original thrust bearing design which was implemented in the generators is described. Related calculation results based on a TEHD (thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic) calculation software used by Alstom will be presented. A comparison between measurement results gathered in the 1980s is given. In the second part, a potential solution of a more beneficial bearing design is described. The proposed thrust bearing design modification is an implementation of Alstom"s PolypadTM coating. This modern polymer (PEEK) coating material has already been used by Alstom in projects around the world for many years. This coating allows pushing the operating parameters limits toward higher temperatures and lower oil film thicknesses far beyond the limits known for the conventional bearing materials.

Warm HTK donor pretreatment reduces liver injury during static cold storage in experimental rat liver transplantation

BACKGROUND： Organ shortage has led to an increased number of transplantations from extended criteria donors. These organs are more vulnerable to ischemia-reperfusion injury. Thus, improvement of organ preservation is needed. HTK is a widely used preservation solution for static cold storage in liver transplantation. The present study was to investigate the beneficial effect of warm HTK donor pretreatment on liver preservation.

Platinum-palladium nanoparticles are synthesized and characterized with regard to their application in fuel cells due to their high (electro) catalytic activity. Different preparation times are applied leading to different structures, from Pd cubic to core-shell PtPd concave, and different chemical compositions. The resulting particles are studied via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and in-situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements. The latter allows the investigation of the oxygen reduction reaction following the variations with varying applied potentials by analysis using the Iterative Transformation Factor Analysis (ITFA) and the creation of a two-component system that consists of metallic Pt-Pd and the related oxide. With the used model, the different concentrations of the oxide are linked to the consecutive chemical steps of the oxygen reduction reaction. Finally, the catalytic activity of the particles is determined via linear scanning voltammetry and reveals a dependence on the shape and the composition of the particles.
