Colombian ecosystems maintain key ecological processes that support thousands of species, including human beings. With the expansion of the country’s population, and the implementation of a government’s development plan based on an economy centred on extraction patterns, the conservation of these ecosystems is at serious risk. It is a priority to implement effective strategies that ensure the protection of the country’s biological diversity as well as the mitigation and prevention of threats and to contribute to its proper use. Colombia’s development strategies as well as its peoples’ wellbeing depend on the suitable condition of its natural assets. The identification of surrogates of conservation, the formulation of conservation goals, the prioritization of key areas and the formulation of conservation strategies based on the preservation, restoration and sustainable use of the territory and its biodiversity are proposed for 60% of the emerged land (~ 700,000 Km2). This research aims at giving proper guidelines to manage the territory and finding common points between development and biodiversity conservation, as well as to use this input for the development and implementation of a National Decision-making Support System (DSS) that will potentially have an impact on Colombia’s environmental policies and territorial planning schemes.

Background: Although evidence on the health effects of sedentary behavior(SB) has grown systematically in recent years, few developing countries have reported population levels of SB, especially in South America. Our objective was to describe time spent sitting in a representative sample from Chile categorized by age, gender, educational level, and body mass index(BMI).Methods: A national health survey was conducted in Chile in a nationally representative sample(n = 5411) in 2009-2010. Sitting time(ST) was measured with the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire Version ***: Data were from 5031 participants(43.26±0.41 years, mean±SE; 40.3% male). Overall, there were no gender differences in mean ST(men: 158.10±5.80 min/day, women 143.45±4.77 min/day; p = 0.05). ST was lower in those who lived in rural areas compared with urban areas(99.4 min/day vs. 160.0 min/day; p = 0.001). ST increased significantly with increasing BMI, but only in men(p = 0.009), and was positively related to years of education in both men and women(p < 0.0001).Conclusion: The findings were different from those reported in other countries and contexts, reinforcing the need for international surveillance and monitoring over time to inform policy makers. Differences in ST across different groups emphasize the need to develop tailored messages and interventions for reducing ST in different population subgroups.

Based on the information that was collected on the County Health Rankings website [1], one of the top health concerns for Maricopa County was sexually transmitted infections or STIs. A big concern with STIs is this is not a common subject explored in educational settings or addressed socially. There are many organizations, including the CDC, that have access to materials, there is limited distribution of the educational content. Therefore, the public is not well informed and lacks the information to make educated decisions. The areas with insufficiencies are knowledge of the disease processes, prevention, and treatment.

BACKGROUND Life-long removal of gluten from the diet is currently the only way to manage celiac disease(CeD). Until now, no objective test has proven useful to objectively detect ingested gluten in clinical practice. Recently, tests that determine consumption of gluten by assessing excretion of gluten immunogenic peptides(GIP) in stool and urine have been developed. Their utility, in comparison with conventional dietary and analytical follow-up strategies, has not been fully *** To assess the performance of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and point-of-care tests(PoCTs) for GIP excretion in CeD patients on gluten-free diet(GFD).METHODS We conducted an observational, prospective, cross-sectional study in patients following a GFD for at least two years. Using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale questionnaire, patients were classified at enrollment as asymptomatic or symptomatic. Gluten consumption was assessed twice by 3-d dietary recall and GIP excretion(by ELISA in stool and PoCTs(commercial kits for stool and urine) in two consecutive samples. These samples and dietary reports were obtained 10 day apart one from the other. Patients were encouraged to follow their usual GFD during the study *** Forty-four patients were enrolled, of which 19(43.2%) were symptomatic despite being on a GFD. Overall, 83 sets of stool and/or urine samples were *** out of 44 patients(25.0%) had at least one positive GIP test. The occurrence of at least one positive test was 32% in asymptomatic patients compared with 15.8% in symptomatic patients. GIP was concordant with dietary reports in 65.9% of cases(Cohen′s kappa: 0.317). PoCT detected dietary indiscretions. Both ELISA and PoCT in stool were concordant(concomitantly positive or negative) in 67 out of 74(90.5%) samples. The diagnosis of bacterial or fungal infections requires the identification of the pathogen etiology in the shortest time possible. Although some biomarkers are used as indicators of bacterial infections, their specificity and sensitivity are highly variable, and there is no direct relationship between the level increase of these biomarkers for mycosis. It is common to obtain negative microbiological cultures in patients infected by non-culturable, intracellular bacteria or mycosis, even though there is a high clinical suspicion of infection. This study identifies the pathogen present in critically infected patients through 16S and 18S/eEF1 genes detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with Sanger sequencing. Thirty clinical samples were evaluated by PCR, of which 40% were positive for fungi, 23.33% for bacteria, 26.7% for fungi and bacteria, and 10% for no pathogen. The PCRs outcomes period for bacteria or fungi was one day compared to seven and up to 14 days (on average) of microbiological culture for bacteria and fungi. Then, we assessed the relationship with the most used biomarkers (procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, globular sedimentation velocity, and the neutrophil-lymphocyte index). This combination of molecular techniques has been shown as helpful in identifying intracellular bacteria and fungi that are difficult to culture by conventional methods. Screening with genomic markers 16S and 18S/eEF1 by PCR allowed us to optimize the time to obtain the result of the infection caused by bacteria or fungi. Also, identifying the specific etiological microorganism by Sanger sequencing was very helpful in avoiding the progression of the disease and setting targeted treatment with better clinical outcomes.
