Analysis of 3.4 Ah lithium-sulfur pouch cells by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Despite great progress in lithium-sulfur(Li-S) batteries, the electrochemical reactions in the cell are not yet fully understood. Electrode processes, complex interfaces and internal resistance may be characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). EIS is a non-destructive technique and easy to apply, though there are challenges in ensuring the reproducibility of measurements and the interpretation of impedance data. Here, we present the impedance behavior of a 3.4 Ah Li-S pouch cell characterized by EIS. The impedance changes were analyzed over the entire depth-of-discharge, depth-of-charge,and at various temperatures. Based on the formation of intermediates during(dis)charging, the changes of resistances are observed. Overall, the increase in temperature causes a decrease in electrolyte viscosity,lowering the surface energy which can improve the penetration of the electrolyte into the electrode pores. Moreover, the effect of superimposed AC current during EIS measurement was analyzed, and the results show the dependence of the charge transfer resistance on superimposed AC current which was lower compared to steady-state conditions and consents with theory.

Alcohol consumption is a predominant etiological factor in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases, resulting in fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) involves complex and still unclear biological processes, the oxidative metabolites of ethanol such as acetaldehyde and reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a preeminent role in the clinical and pathological spectrum of ALD. Ethanol oxidative metabolism influences intracellular signaling pathways and deranges the transcriptional control of several genes, leading to fat accumulation, fibrogenesis and activation of innate and adaptive immunity. Acetaldehyde is known to be toxic to the liver and alters lipid homeostasis, decreasing peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and increasing sterol regulatory element binding protein activity via an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent mechanism. AMPK activation by ROS modulates autophagy, which has an important role in removing lipid droplets. Acetaldehyde and aldehydes generated from lipid peroxidation induce collagen synthesis by their ability to form protein adducts that activate transforming-growth-factor-β-dependent and independent profibrogenic pathways in activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Furthermore, activation of innate and adaptive immunity in response to ethanol metabolism plays a key role in the development and progression of ALD. Acetaldehyde alters the intestinal barrier and promote lipopolysaccharide (LPS) translocation by disrupting tight and adherent junctions in human colonic mucosa. Acetaldehyde and LPS induce Kupffer cells to release ROS and proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that contribute to neutrophils infiltration. AIM:To assess the efficacy of glucomannan(GNN) as the sole treatment for abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders(FGIDs).METHODS:We conducted a double-blind,placebocontrolled,randomized *** were recruited among children referred to the Department of Paediatrics,Medical University of *** in the study were children aged 7-17 years with abdominal pain-related FGIDs classified according to the Rome Ⅲ diagnostic *** children were randomly assigned to receive GNN,a polysaccharide of 1,4-D-glucose and D-mannose,a soluble fiber from the Japanese Konjac plant,at a dosage of 2.52 g/d(1 sachet of 1.26 g 2 times a day),or a comparable placebo(maltodextrin) at the same *** content of each sachet was dissolved in approximately 125 mL of fluid and was consumed twice daily for 4 ***:Of the 89 eligible children,84(94%) completed the study."No pain" and "treatment success"(defined as no pain or a decrease ≥ 2/6 points on the FACES Pain Scale Revised) were similar in the GNN(n = 41) and placebo(n = 43) groups [no pain(12/41 vs 6/43,respectively;RR = 2.1,95%CI:0.87-5.07) as well as treatment success(23/41 vs 20/43;RR = 1.2,95%CI:0.79-1.83)].No significant differences between the groups were observed in the secondary outcomes,such as abdominal cramps,abdominal bloating/gassiness,episodes of nausea or vomiting,or a changed in stool *** demonstrated no significant influence on the number of children requiring rescue therapy,school absenteeism,or daily ***:In our setting,GNN,as dosed in this study,was no more effective than the placebo in achieving therapeutic success in the management of FGIDs in children.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the sequential extraction system for phenolic compounds and pectin from waste ‘Granny Smith’ apple peel using ultrasound. The effects of solvent, formic acid concentration (CFA), and the number of extraction steps on the content of individual and total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity, were determined. Then, pectin was obtained from apple peel before (BE) and after (AE) phenolic compounds extraction, using conventional (TR) or ultrasound-assisted procedures (US). The two-steps 80% Acetone (0% CFA) extraction system had the highest TPC (3.47 g GAE/Kg). Procyanidin B2 (0.03-0.77 g/kg) was the major phenolic compound extracted from ‘Granny Smith’ apple peel. AE pectin extraction yield (6.38% for US and 4.92% for TR) was higher than BE. Pectin obtained had 57-60% DE, 9.3-10.3% Methoxyl content, and 436-460 equivalent weight. Wasted apple peel is a great low-cost source of phenolic compounds and pectin. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve the highest yields of both compounds through appropriate extraction sequences (AE: phenolic compound extraction followed by pectin extraction) and alternative technologies like ultrasound-assisted extraction.

The Scandinavian Prostate Cancer Group- 4 recently reported the long-term survival benefit in men who were randomized to radical prostatectomy versus men watchful waiting for localized prostate cancer.1 The authors have now presented the companion article that updates the long-term quality of life evaluation in these men.2 Given the excellent prognosis of patients with early stage prostate cancer, the impact of therapy on patient＇s quality of life is a significant factor in the optimal management of this disease.
