Comparison of PM_(10) concentrations and metal content in three different sites of the Venice Lagoon: An analysis of possible aerosol sources

The Venice Lagoon is exposed to atmospheric pollutants from industrial activities, thermoelectric power plants, petrochemical plants, incinerator, domestic heating, ship traffic, glass factories and vehicular emissions on the mainland. In 2005, construction began on the mobile dams （MOSE）, one dam for each channel connecting the lagoon to the Adriatic Sea as a barrier against high tide. These construction works could represent an additional source of pollutants. PM10 samples were taken on random days between 2007 and 2010 at three different sites： Punta Sabbioni, Chioggia and Malamocco, located near the respective dam construction worksites. Chemical analyses of V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, T1 and Pb in PM10 samples were performed by Inductively coupled plasma- quadrupole mass spectrometry （ICP-QMS） and results were used to identify the main aerosol sources. The correlation of measured data with meteorology, and source apportionment, failed to highlight a contribution specifically associated to the emissions of the MOSE construction works. The comparison of the measurements at the three sites showed a substantial homogeneity of metal concentrations in the area. Source apportionment with principal component analysis （PCA） and positive matrix factorization （PMF） showed that a four principal factors model could describe the sources of metals in PM10. Three of them were assigned to specific sources in the area and one was characterised as a source of mixed origin （anthropogenic and crustal）. A specific anthropogenic source of PM10 rich in Ni and Cr, active at the Chioggia site, was also identified.

The antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of propolis, bee glue, of various climate and orographic characteristics, collected from Italy, Brazil and Russia, was evaluated measuring their inhibitory action on peroxidation of linoleic acid, radical scavenging ability towards 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, total phenolic content and reducing capacity by enzymatic and Folin method respectively. Propolis samples were chemically characterized by HPLC-MS/MS in order to find a possible correlation between antioxidant activity and polyphenols composition and quantification. The results obtained indicate that Italian and Russian propolis samples have similar polyphenolic composition and, as a consequence, almost similar antioxidant activity, while Brazilian propolis evidence lower polyphenolic and antioxidant characteristics. Climate and orography reasons of these differences are also suggested.

Considering the variation in metabolic evaluation and medical management of kidney stone disease,this consensus review was created to discuss the metabolic activity of nephrolithiasis,define the difference between single and recurrent stone formers,and develop a schema for metabolic and radiologic follow-up.A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify studies of metabolic evaluation and follow-up of patients with *** single and recurrent stone formers share many similarities in metabolic *** study group determined that based on an assessment of risk for stone recurrence and metabolic activity,single and recurrent stone formers should be evaluated comprehensively,including two 24 h urine studies on a random *** medication and dietary recommendations are effective for many patients in reducing the risk of stone ***-up of those with stone disease should be obtained depending on the level of metabolic activity of the patient,the risk of chronic kidney disease and the risk of osteoporosis/osteopenia.A standard scheme includes a baseline metabolic profile,a repeat study 3e6 months after initiation of treatment,and then yearly when stable,with abdominal imaging obtained every 1-2 years.

Unusual Detection of Lathosterol in Amniotic Fluids Investigated for the Determination of Cholesterol and 7-Dehydrocholesterol for Suspected Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome

The Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase deficiency, which is characterized by abnormally elevated amniotic fluid 7-DHC (7-dehydrocholesterol) concentrations. A GC/FID (gas-chromatography with a flame ionization detector) and GC/MS (gas-chromatography with a mass detector) method was optimized for the detection of cholesterol and 7-DHC in amniotic fluids. The quantitative determination of cholesterol in 39 control amniotic fluids evidenced that between the fourth and fifth month of pregnancy the levels of this analyte are quite constant, the concentration of total and free cholesterol being respectively 10.3 μg·mL﹣1 (SD = ±3.6) and 1.7 μg·mL﹣1 (SD = ±0.91), while the analysis of 60 amniotic fluids potentially related to SLOS, showed a higher variability of cholesterol levels. Moreover, in 13 samples an analyte which did not correspond either to cholesterol or to 7-DHC was detected. A GC/MS investigation allowed us to identify this compound as lathosterol, a precursor of cholesterol in the biosynthetic pathway.
