Storage backends of parallel compute clusters are still based mostly on magnetic disks,while newer and faster storage technologies such as flash-based SSDs or non-volatile random access memory(NVRAM)are deployed within compute *** these new storage technologies into scientific workflows is unfortunately today a mostly manual task,and most scientists therefore do not take advantage of the faster storage *** approach to systematically include nodelocal SSDs or NVRAMs into scientific workflows is to deploy ad hoc file systems over a set of compute nodes,which serve as temporary storage systems for single applications or longer-running *** paper presents results from the Dagstuhl Seminar 17202"Challenges and Opportunities of User-Level File Systems for HPC"and discusses application scenarios as well as design strategies for ad hoc file systems using node-local storage *** discussion includes open research questions,such as how to couple ad hoc file systems with the batch scheduling environment and how to schedule stage-in and stage-out processes of data between the storage backend and the ad hoc file *** presented are strategies to build ad hoc file systems by using reusable components for networking and how to improve storage device *** interfaces and semantics are presented,for example those used by the three ad hoc file systems BeeOND,GekkoFS,and *** presentation covers a range from file systems running in production to cutting-edge research focusing on reaching the performance limits of the underlying devices.

Cyano-containing ionic liquids for the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from an aromatic/aliphatic mixture

Ionic liquids can replace conventional solvents in aromatic/aliphatic extractions, if they have higher aromatic distribution coef- ficients and higher or similar aromatic/aliphatic selectivities. Also physical properties, such as density and viscosity, must be taken into account if a solvent is applied in an industrial extraction process. Cyano-containing ionic liquids have a lower den- sity than the benchmark solvent sulfolane and a higher viscosity. Sulfolane is from a hydrodynamic point of view a better sol- vent than ionic liquids for the aromatic/aliphatic extraction. The most suitable ionic liquids for the extraction of aromatic hy- drocarbons from a mixture of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons are [bmim]C(CN)3, [3-mebupy]N(CN)2, [3-mebupy]C(CN)3, [3-mebupy]B(CN)4 and [mebupyrr]B(CN)4. They have factors of 1.2-2.3 higher mass-based distribution coefficients than sul- folane and a similar or higher, up to a factor of 1.9 higher, aromatic/aliphatic selectivity than sulfolane. The IL [3-mebupy]N(CN)2 is a better extractant for the separation of toluene from a mixture of toluene/n-heptane in a pilot plant Ro- tating Disc Contactor (RDC) than sulfolane.

Laser Measurements in High Speed Compressors for Rotor-Stator Interaction Analysis

This paper deals with the experimental quantification of the unsteady effects of the interactions between rotor and stator rows in high speed compressors. Due to the fact that the levels of the periodic fluctuations arising from the unsteady interaction may be low compared with the random fluctuations arising from the measurement uncertainties, it is crucial to minimize the errors inherent to the used technique. The first part of the paper concentrates on technical details relative to the experimental process. The second part is devoted to the data post-processing. Two tools for analysing the rotor-stator interactions are presented. The first tool is based on a decomposition of the flow field which was initially introduced to solve numerical problems when attempting to calculate the flow field in a multi-row configuration. The second tool is based on a spectral analysis of the signal, that qualifies the interaction in a sense of circumferential spinning lobes. Experimental results obtained within both an axial and a centrifugal high speed compressors are used to illustrate the data processing. In both cases, the effects of the unsteady interaction are quantified.

Engineering of immunoinstructive extracellular matrices for enhanced osteoinductivity

The increasing recognition of the contribution of the immune system to activate and prime regeneration implies that tissue engineering strategies and biomaterials design should target regulation of early immunological *** previously proposed the cell-based engineering and devitalization of extracellular matrices(ECMs)as a strategy to generate implant materials delivering custom-defined ***,in the context of bone regeneration,we aimed at enhancing the osteoinductivity of such ECMs by enriching their immunomodulatory factors *** with IL1βa cell line overexpressing BMP-2 enabled engineering of ECMs preserving osteoinductive signals and containing larger amounts of angiogenic(VEGF)and pro-inflammatory molecules(IL6,IL8 and MCP1).Upon implantation,these IL1β-induced materials enhanced processes typical of the inflammatory phase(e.g.,vascular invasion,osteoclast recruitment and differentiation),leading to‘regenerative’events(e.g.,M2 macrophage polarization)and ultimately resulting in faster and more efficient bone *** results bear relevance towards the manufacturing of potent off-the-shelf osteoinductive materials and outline the broader paradigm of engineering immunoinstructive implants to enhance tissue regeneration.

Lactose obtained from cheese whey is a low value commodity despite its great potential as raw material for the production of bioactive *** them,prebiotics stand out as valuable ingredients to be added to food matrices to build up functional foods,which currently represent the most active sector within the food *** foods market has been growing steadily in the recent decades along with the increasing awareness of the world population about healthy nutrition,and this is having a strong impact on lactose-derived *** of them are produced by enzyme biocatalysis because of molecular precision and environmental sustainability *** current status and outlook of the production of lactose-derived bioactive compounds is presented with special emphasis on downstream operations which are critical because of the rather modest lactose conversion and product yields that are *** though some of these products have already an established market,there are still several challenges referring to the need of developing better catalysts and more cost-effective downstream operations for delivering high quality products at affordable *** technological push is expected to broaden the spectrum of lactose-derived bioactive compounds to be produced at industrial scale in the near future.

Anthropomorphism Indexes of the Kinematic Chain for Artificial Hands

Anthropomorphic hands have received increasing research interest in the fields of robotics and *** it is not yet clear how to evaluate their *** in the kinematic chain is essential to achieve both functionality and cosmesis.A few previous works have addressed the definition of anthropomorphism indexes,although they have some limitations in its *** this study,three different anthropomorphism indexes have been defined to compare the kinematic chain of artificial hands with that of the human *** indexes are based on the comparison of:(I)the parameters of the kinematic chain(dimensions,type of joints,orientations and ranges of motion),(2)the reachable workspace,and(3)common grasping *** artificial hands with different degrees of anthropomorphism have been compared using the three Anthropomorphism Indexes of the Kinematic Chain(AIKC).The results show a high correlation between the first and third AIKC for the hands *** second AIKC presents much lower values than the other two,although they are higher for hands that combine abduction/adduction and flexion/extension movements in the kinematic chain of each *** indexes can be useful during the initial stage of designing artificial hands or evaluating their anthropomorphism.

Eosinophilic esophagitis is an immune-allergic pathology of multifactorial etiology(genetic and environmental)that affects both pediatric and adult *** symptoms,which include heartburn,regurgitation,and esophageal stenosis(with dysphagia being more frequent in eosinophilic esophagitis in young adults and children),are similar to those of gastroesophageal reflux disease,causing delays in diagnosis and *** endoscopic findings such as furrows,esophageal mucosa trachealization,and whitish exudates may suggest its presence,this diagnosis should be confirmed histologically based on the presence of more than 15 eosinophils per high-power field and the exclusion of other causes of eosinophilia(parasitic infections,hypereosinophilic syndrome,inflammatory bowel disease,among others)for which treatment could be ***,the 3“D”s(“Drugs,Diet,and Dilation”)are considered the fundamental components of *** first 2 components,which involve the use of proton pump inhibitors,corticosteroids,immunosuppressants and empirical diets or guided food elimination based on allergy tests,are more useful in the initial phases,whereas endoscopic dilation is reserved for esophageal ***,the most important aspects of eosinophilic esophagitis pathophysiology will be reviewed,in addition to evidence for the various treatments.

An optimized use of limited ground based topographic data for river applications

A prime requirement for hydrological applications, such as sediment budgeting or numerical modelling,is that produced Digital Terrain Models(DTMs) accurately represent the shape of landforms, especially for river reaches where data are not homogeneous. DTM error is a function of data point measurement accuracy and density and also of the field survey strategy when limited amounts of data will be *** paper aims to advance the importance of the field survey strategy for the specific, but common cases, where only limited topographic data will be available. This methodology is based on the idea that any feature can be properly described by a set of cross sections and breaklines describing both main and secondary directions of the flow. Then, a longitudinal linear interpolation can be applied to the defined homogeneous zones. This morphologically oriented(MO) method that includes data acquisition strategy and interpolation, was validated using a reference DTM derived from Li DAR measurements. An estimation of the uncertainties also is suggested based on the distance of the nearest point and the local slope using a geographically weighted regression. The proposed MO method is typically applicable to Alpine river reaches characterized by multiple channels that may always be underwater and not navigable such as an alternate bar system with secondary and transverse channels.
