Ketamine anesthesia reduces intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats

AIM: To investigate the effects of ketamine anesthesia on the motility alterations and tissue injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion in rats. METHODs: Thirty male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were used. Ischemia was induced by ob-structing blood flow in 25% of the total small intesti-nal length (ileum) with a vascular clamp for 45 min, after which either 60 min or 24 h of reperfusion was allowed. Rats were either anesthetized with pento-barbital sodium (50 mg/kg) or ketamine (100 mg/kg). Control groups received sham surgery. After 60 min of reperfusion, the intestine was examined for mor-phological alterations, and after 24 h intestinal basic electrical rhythm (BER) frequency was calculated, and intestinal transit determined in all groups. REsULTs: The intestinal mucosa in rats that were anesthetized with ketamine showed moderate altera-tions such as epithelial lifting, while ulceration and hemorrhage was observed in rats that received pento-barbital sodium after 60 min of reperfusion. Quantita-tive analysis of structural damage using the Chiu scaleshowed significantly less injury in rats that received ketamine than in rats that did not (2.35 ± 1.14 vs 4.58 ± 0.50, P stance traveled by a mark-er, expressed as percentage of total intestinal length, in rats that received pentobarbital sodium was 20% ± 2% in comparison with 25.9% ± 1.64% in rats that re-ceived ketamine (P = 0.017). BER was not statistically different between groups. CONCLUsION: Our results show that ketamine anesthesia is associated with diminished intestinal injury and abolishes the intestinal transit delay induced by ischemia/reperfusion.

Differential diagnosis and management of liver tumors in infants

During the first year of life, most of the liver neoplasms are benign in origin, but some of these histologically benign lesions may be challenging in their management. Although most hepatic hemangiomas can be safely observed until involution is documented, some patients will need treatment due to progressive hepatomegaly, hypothyroidism and/or cardiac failure. Large mesenchymal hamartomas may require extensive hepatic resection and an appropriate surgical plan is critical to obtain good results. For malignant neoplasms such as hepatoblastoma, complete surgical resection is the mainstay of curative therapy. The decision about whether to perform an upfront or delayed resection of a primary liver malignant tumor is based on many considerations, including the ease of resection, surgical expertise, tumor histology and stage, and the likely chemosensitivity of the tumor. This article reviews the initial management of the more common hepatic tumors of infancy, focusing on the differential diagnosis and treatment options.

Performance of Cosmetic Ingredients Evaluated by Their Membrane Protection Efficiency

Plant extracts (PEs) are frequently used as ingredients in skin and hair care products to improve protection against the excess of sun exposure. PEs are usually selected based on their antioxidant capacity for reducing the damage in lipids and proteins, which are key molecules in the maintenance of skin homeostasis and hair integrity. Interestingly, biomolecules that do not have any antioxidant capacity can have a protective effect by physically adsorbing and inhibiting leakage of membranes. Our aims are: 1) to develop an experimental protocol that quantifies the level of membrane damage/protection;2) to recommend an approach to compare the membrane protection efficiency of different PEs;3) to briefly describe the mechanisms of membrane protection. Evaluation of membrane damage/protection is based on a phospholipid liposome system that signals the membrane rupture caused by photo-induced lipid oxidation. Carboxyfluorescein (CF) emission is monitored as a function of time (120 min) in a controlled experimental setup, in which a certain level of membrane damage is induced by Dimethyl-Methylene Blue (DMMB) photosensitized oxidation during red-light irradiation. Percentage levels of membrane damage/protection are calculated by comparing the CF fluorescence level of DMMB-liposomes in the presence of varying concentrations of membrane-protective ingredients with that of surfactant-dissolved DMMB-liposomes. Membrane protectants reduce the level of CF fluorescence during irradiation of DMMB-liposomes. Gallic acid (GA) and trehalose (Tre) were used as standard compounds to compute the levels of protection by the antioxidant and physical adsorption mechanisms, respectively. The percentage of membrane protection was shown to be linearly proportional to the concentration of the standard protectants. BACKGROUND Giant cell hepatitis in the adult population remains very poorly defined with only 100 case reports published in the literature over the last three *** To present our center’s experience in an attempt to learn about the predisposing factors,outcomes and efficacy of proposed therapeutic interventions for giant cell *** A retrospective chart review was conducted through the electronic records of the University of Pittsburgh Medical *** queried 36726 liver biopsy reports from January 1,1991 to December 6,*** search yielded 50 patients who were identified as carrying a definite diagnosis of post-infantile giant cell hepatitis(PIGCH)by *** data collected included demographic information,laboratory data(liver function tests,autoimmune markers)and transplant *** order to better analyze patient characteristics and outcomes,subjects were separated into a non-transplant(native)liver group and a post-liver transplant(allograft)*** The incidence of PIGCH was approximately 0.14%of all biopsies queried in the 25-year *** mean age was 48 years with 66%*** function tests were classified as 38.2%cholestatic,35.3%hepatocellular and 26.5%*** hepatitis was found to be the most prevalent predisposing factor leading to PIGCH constituting 32%of *** consisted mainly of immunosuppression,viral targeted therapy,supportive care and in six cases liver *** The diagnosis of PIGCH remains clinically challenging and requires a high index of suspicion as well as a thorough history,physical examination,serological workup and liver *** of the underlying cause can result in clinical stability in a large number of cases.

The tomato(solanum lycopersicum L.)is one of the world’s most important vegetable ***,phytopathogenic bacteria affect the yield and quality of tomato cultivation,like Agrobacterium tumefeciens(At),Clavibacter michiganensis ***(Cmm),Pseudomonas syringae ***(Pst),Ralstonia solanacearum(Rs),and Xanthomonas axonopodis(Xa).synthetic chemical products are used mostly on disease plant control,but overuse generates resistance to bacterial *** study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera *** against At,Cmm,Pst,Rs,and Xa,as well as information about this plant species’chemical *** activity against pathogens observed by microplate technique,phytochemical screening,and FTIR analysis revealed different bio-active compounds on ethanolic extracts with antibacterial *** growth inhibition rate ranged between 0.08%and 99.94%.The inhibitory concentration,IC50,required to inhibit 50%of At,Cmm,Pst,Rs,and Xa bacterial growth,was 276.67,350.48,277.85,351.49,and 283.22 mg/L,*** of phytopathogen bacteria’s growth increased as the concentrations of the extract also *** oleifera extract can be recommended as a potent bio-bactericide.
