Educated consumers don't believe artificial meat is the solution to the problems with the meat industry

The production of in vitro meat by cell culture has been suggested by some scientists as one solution to address the major challenges facing our society. Firstly, consumers would like the meat industry to reduce potential discomfort of animals on modern farms, or even to avoid killing animals to eat them. Secondly, citizens would like meat producers to reduce potential environmental deterioration by livestock and finally, there is a need to reduce world hunger by increasing protein resources while the global population is predicted to grow rapidly. According to its promoters, artificial meat has a potential to make eating animals unnecessary, to reduce carbon footprint of meat production and to satisfy all the nutritional needs and desires of consumers and citizens. To check these assumptions, a total of 817 educated people（mainly scientists and students） were interviewed worldwide by internet in addition to 865 French educated people. We also interviewed 208 persons（mainly scientists） after an oral presentation regarding artificial meat. Results of the three surveys were similar, but differed between males and females. More than half of the respondents believed that ＂artificial meat＂ was feasible and realistic. However, there was no majority to think that artificial meat will be healthy and tasty, except respondents who were in favour of artificial meat. A large majority of the respondents believed that the meat industry is facing important problems related to the protection of the environment, animal welfare or inefficient meat production to feed humanity. However, respondents did not believe that artificial meat will be the solution to solve the mentioned problems with the meat industry, especially respondents who were against artificial meat. The vast majority of consumers wished to continue to eat meat even they would accept to consume less meat in a context of increasing food needs. AIM: To evaluate the role of microRNA (miR)-146a, -155 and -122 in the duodenal mucosa of pediatric patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and the effect of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) on these miRs in duodenal epithelial and fibroblast ***: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsies derived from the macroscopically inflamed (CD inflamed: n = 10) and intact (CD intact: n = 10) duodenal mucosa of pediatric CD patients and control children (C: n = 10) were examined. Expression of miR-146a, -155 and -122 was determined by real-time polymerase-chain reaction (PCR). The expression of the above miRs was investigated in recombinant human TGF-β (1 nmol/L, 24 h) or vehicle treated small intestinal epithelial cells (CCL-241) and primary duodenal fibroblast cells derived from healthy children as ***: Expression of miR-146a was significantly higher in the inflamed duodenal mucosa compared to the intact duodenal mucosa of children with CD (CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs CD intact: 0.62 ± 0.26, P ≤ 0.01) and to the control group (CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs C: 1.00 ± 0.33, P ≤ 0.05). The expression of miR-155 was significantly increased in the inflamed region of the duodenum compared to the control group (CD inflamed: 4.87 ± 1.02 vs Control: 1.00 ± 0.40, P ≤ 0.001). The expression of miR-122 was unchanged in the inflamed or intact mucosa of CD patients compared to controls. TGF-β treatment significantly decreased the expression of miR-155 in small intestinal epithelial cells (TGF-β: 0.7 ± 0.083 vs Control: 1 ± 0.09, P ≤ 0.05) and also the expression of miR-146a (TGF-β: 0.67 ± 0.04 vs Control: 1 ± 0.15, P ≤ 0.01) and miR-155 (TGF-β: 0.72 ± 0.09 vs Control: 1 ± 0.06, P ≤ 0.05) in primary duodenal fibroblasts compared to corresponding vehicle treated control

Complications of Learning Curve in Supratentorial Intraventricular Region. The Concept of Fast Daily Fresh Cadaver Practice. (Technical Note for Training Method)

Background: The difficulty of learning curve in different microsurgical regions is one of the most challenging factors that affect neurosurgeon’s life. Two of the delicate areas are the suprasellar intraventricular and pontocerebellar region. High level of microsurgery or endoscopic surgery requires virtuosity, which can not be learnt only by assisting. Even among the well skilled neurosurgeons who work in big centers we can often hear “in spite of centralization there are not enough operations available to keep the high level of our skills”. The situation of surgeons working at mid centers is more difficult especially on duties. Methods: Huge number of scientific articles demonstrate the importance of different types of cadaver practice, but always did not pay enough attention to the daily fast fresh cadaver exercises. Focusing on lifelong every day practice we examined the difficulties of learning curve in intraventricular and pontocerebellar region and try to give some useful advice for practicing on fresh cadavers on a daily basis. We offer a simple endovascular fresh cadaver model for practicing. Results: We have performed more than 800 quick (60 - 90 minutes long) routine practice sessions in these two regions during last 18 years. We found that implantation a modelized pathology and removing it by microscopical or endoscopic way without causing injuries to sensitive structures seems to be the most practical way of fast everyday training. Nerves and vascular bypass sutures are also excellent practical method. Conclusions: We have focused on daily fast fresh cadaver practice as a novel training method like used in professional sport and art. After 18 years experience we can state that, for mastering the microsurgery of pontocerebellar and intraventricular region, which is one of the most challenging regions minimum 100 fresh cadaver practice sessions need before performing the operation. Background: To investigate the learning curve of “robotic surgery” versus “conventional laparoscopy” in two trials of the FLS program in a population of medical students with no experience in laparoscopy. Methods: A prospective trial. Students, all novices in training and surgical practice, were randomized into 2 groups: the “traditional laparoscopy” group and the “robotic assistance” group. Students were evaluated during two tests from the FLS: peg transfer and intracorporeal knot tying. Results: The median laparoscopic knot completion time was significantly lower in the “robotic surgery” group (p = 0.038). Conclusions: Robotic assistance training in neophytes is effective in improving the completion time of laparoscopic knots.

In vitro effect of amoxicillin and clarithromycin on the 3' region of cagA gene in Helicobacter pylori isolates

AIM:To evaluate the in vitro effect of amoxicillin and clarithromycin on the cag pathogenicity island(cag PAI).METHODS:One hundred and forty-nine clinical isolates of Helicobacter pylori(***)cultured from gastric biopsies from 206 Colombian patients with dyspeptic symptoms from a high-risk area for gastric cancer were included as study *** susceptibility was determined by the agar dilution *** isolates at baseline and in amoxicillin and clarithromycin serial dilutions were subjected to genotyping(cagA,vacA alleles s and m),Glu-Pro-Ile-Tyr-Ala(EPIYA)polymerase chain reaction and random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD).Images of the RAPD amplicons were analyzed by Gel-Pro Analyzer *** analyses was done using SPSS 15.0statistical package,where each of the fingerprint bands were denoted as *** were designed by following Ward’s clustering method and the estimation of distances between each pair of *** isolates was calculated with the squared Euclidean ***:Resistance rates were 4%for amoxicillin and 2.7%for clarithromycin with 2%double *** evidenced a high prevalence of the genotype cagA-positive/vacA *** 3’region of cagA gene was successfully amplified in 92.3%(12/13)of the baseline resistant isolates and in 60%(36/60)of the resistant isolates growing in antibiotic *** observing the distribution of the number of EPIYA repetitions in each dilution with respect to baseline isolates,it was found that in 61.5%(8/13)of the baseline isolates,a change in the number of EPIYA repetitions lowered antibiotic *** gain and loss of EPIYA motifs resulted in a diversity of *** subclones after bacterial adjustment to changing conditions product of antibiotic *** PCR evidenced the close clonal relationship between baseline isolates and isolates growing in antibiotic ***:Antibiotic pressure does not induce loss of the cag pathoge

Quantification by Signal to Noise Ratio of Active Infrared Thermography Data Processing Techniques

In this paper, the use of a signal to noise ratio (SNR) is proposed for the quantification of the goodness of some selected processing techniques of thermographic images, such as differentiated absolute contrast, skewness and kurtosis based algorithms, pulsed phase transform, principal component analysis and thermographic signal reconstruction. A new hybrid technique is also applied (PhAC—Phase absolute contrast), it combines three different processing techniques: phase absolute contrast, pulsed phase thermography and thermographic signal reconstruction. The quality of the results is established on the basis of the values of the parameter SNR, assessed for the present defects in the analyzed specimen, which enabled to quantify and compare their identification and the quality of the results of the employed technique.

Molecular Landers are a class of compounds containing an aromatic board as well as bulky side groups which upon adsorption of the molecule on a surface may lift the molecular board away from the *** molecular Landers have extensively been studied as model systems for nanomachines and the formation of molecular wires,as well as for their function as“molecular moulds”,i.e.,acting as templates by accommodating metal atoms underneath their aromatic ***,we investigate the adsorption of a novel Lander molecule 1,4-bis(4-(2,4-diaminotriazine)phenyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)benzene(DAT,C_(64)H_(68)N_(10))on Cu(110)and Au(111)surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum(UHV)*** means of scanning tunneling microscopy(STM)imaging and manipulation,we characterize the morphology and binding geometries of DAT molecules at terraces and step *** the Cu(110)surface,various contact configurations of individual DAT Landers were formed at the step edges in a controlled manner,steered by STM manipulation,including lateral translation,rotation,and pushing molecules to an upper *** diffusion barrier of single DAT molecules on Au(111)is considerably smaller than on Cu(110).The DAT Lander is specially designed with diamino-triazine side groups making it suitable for future studies of molecular self-assembly by hydrogen-bonding *** results presented here are an important guide to the choice of substrate for future studies using this compound.

Characterization of functional biliary pain and dyspeptic symptoms in patients with sphincter of Oddi dysfunction:Effect of papillotomy

AIM： To characterize functional biliary pain and other gastrointestinal （GI） symptoms in postcholecystectomy syndrome （PCS） patients with and without sphincter of Oddi dysfunction （SOD） proved by endoscopic sphincter of Oddi manometry （ESOM）, and to assess the postendoscopic sphincterotomy （EST） outcome. METHODS： We prospectively investigated 85 cholecystectomized patients referred for ERCP because of PCS and suspected SOD. On admission, all patients completed our questionnaire. Physical examination, laboratory tests, abdominal ultrasound, quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy （QHBS）, and ERCP were performed in all patients. Based on clinical and ERCP findings 15 patients had unexpected bile duct stone disease and 15 patients had SOD biliary type Ⅰ. ESOM demonstrated an elevated basal pressure in 25 patients with SOD biliary-type Ⅲ. In the remaining 30 cholecystectomized patients without SOD, the liver function tests, ERCP, QHBS and ESOM were all normal. As a control group, 30 ‘asymptomatic＇ cholecystectomized volunteers （attended to our hospital for general cardiovascular screening） completed our questionnaire, which is consisted of 50 separate questions on GI symptoms and abdominal pain characteristics. Severity of the abdominal pain （frequency and intensity） was assessed with a visual analogue scale （VAS）. In 40 of 80 patients having definite SOD （i.e. patients with SOD biliary type Ⅰ and those with elevated SO basal pressure on ESOM）, an EST was performed just afl：er ERCP. In these patients repeated questionnaires were filled at each follow-up visit （at 3 and 6 too） and a second look QHBS was performed 3 mo after the EST to assess the functional response to EST. RESULTS： The analysis of characteristics of the abdominal pain demonstrated that patients with common bile duct stone and definite SOD had a significantly higher score of symptomatic agreement with previously determined biliary-like pain features than patient groups of PCS without SOD and controls.
