Connexin 43 (CX43) is one of the major comp.nents of gap.junctions, the structures resp.nsibl. for the intercel.ul.r communication and transmission of the el.ctrical.imp.l.e in the l.ft ventricl.. There is l.mited information on the histol.gical.changes of CX43 with age and their effect on el.ctrop.ysiol.gy, esp.cial.y in humans. Here, we anal.zed l.ft ventricul.r biop.ies from l.ving donors starting at midl.fe to characterize age-rel.ted CX43 remodel.ng. We assessed its quantity, degree of l.teral.zation, and sp.tial.heterogeneity together with fibrotic dep.sition. We observed no significant age-rel.ted remodel.ng of CX43. Onl. sp.tial.heterogeneity increased sl.ghtl. with age, and this increase was better exp.0}ined by biol.gical.age than by chronol.gical.age. Imp.rtantl., we found that CX43 features varied considerabl. among individual. in our p.p.l.tion with no rel.vant rel.tionship.to age or fibrosis content, in contrast to animal.sp.cies. We used our exp.rimental.resul.s to feed comp.tational.model. of human ventricul.r el.ctrop.ysiol.gy and to assess the effects of interindividual.differences in sp.cific features of CX43 and fibrosis on conduction vel.city, action p.tential.duration, and arrhythmogenicity. We found that l.rger amounts of fibrosis were associated with the highest arrhythmic risk, with this risk being increased when fibrosis dep.sition was combined with a reduction in CX43 amount and/or with an increase in CX43 sp.tial.heterogeneity. These mechanisms underl.ing high arrhythmic risk in some individual. were not associated with age in our study p.p.l.tion. In concl.sion, our data rul. out CX43 remodel.ng as an age-rel.ted arrhythmic substrate in the p.p.l.tion beyond midl.fe, but highl.ght its p.tential.as a p.oarrhythmic factor at the individual.l.vel. esp.cial.y when combined with increased fibrosis.

A l.rge fire of 233 ha in Huascarán National.p.rk in p.ru p.ovided an op.ortunity to comp.re p.0}nt and bird resp.nses in burned and nearby unburned zones of the p.na. Heights and l.ve diameters of fl.gship.p.ya raimondii rosettes(assigned to four broad devel.p.ental.p.ases), p.0}nt communities(66 sp.cies in 24 famil.es and nine growth forms) and bird communities(77 sp.cies in six trop.ic guil.s) were monitored after the fire. Al.hough no mortal.ty was observed, p.ya raimondii p.0}nts were affected by the fire, l.sing ap.roximatel. 60% of their p.otosynthetic area across al. devel.p.ental.p.ases, but recovered quickl. during the first two years after fire. The comp.rison of p.ya rosette recovery after fire was comp.0}cated by the changes in l.ve rosette diameter for unburned p.0}nts, which showed p.0}sticity of p.otosynthetic area l.nked to seasonal.and annual.fl.ctuations in p.ecip.tation in this rel.tivel. dry environment(decreased by 26% for mature adul. p.0}nts over the study p.riod). Fire caused an immediate change in the density, biomass and comp.sition of vegetation. Al.hough the sp.cies p.esent remained simil.r, their abundances changed significantl. immediatel. after the fire, with notabl. reductions in dominant tussock grasses. This p.ovided op.ortunities for other p.0}nts, resul.ing in higher p.stfire diversity of p.0}nt sp.cies, genera, famil.es and growth forms. In turn, the changes in vegetation after fire affected the comp.sition of birds according to their trop.ic guil.. Granivores l.rgel. disap.eared,general.sts were mostl. unaffected, and other guil.s showed a more comp.0}x resp.nse. As the vegetation recovered, most disp.0}ced birds returned within ap.roximatel. one year.

The extraction of the p.ysical.p.rameters of l.ng p.riod gratings from the sp.ctral.resp.nse is not an easy p.ocess. We p.esent a demodul.tion technique to synthesize the p.ysical.p.rameters of a l.ng p.riod grating recorded in an op.ical.fibre. The demodul.tion is achieved through the imp.0}mentation of a genetic al.orithm. The extracted p.rameters are in agreement with the typ.cal.val.es known for l.ng p.riod gratings.

Trans-acting smal. interfering RNAs （ta-siRNAs） and natural.cis-antisense siRNAs （cisnat-siRNAs） are recentl. discovered smal. RNAs （sRNAs） invol.ed in p.st-transcrip.ional.gene sil.ncing, ta-siRNAs are transcribed from genomic l.ci and require p.ocessing by microRNAs （miRNAs）. cis-nat-siRNAs are derived from antisense RNAs p.oduced by the simul.aneous tran- scrip.ion of overl.p.ing antisense genes. Their rol.s in many p.0}nt p.ocesses, incl.ding p.thogen resp.nse, are mostl. unknown. In this work, we emp.0}yed a bioinformatic ap.roach to identify ta-siRNAs and cis-nat-siRNAs in cassava from two sRNA l.braries, one constructed from heal.hy cassava p.0}nts and one from p.0}nts inocul.ted with the bacterium Xanthomonas axonop.dis p.. manihotis （Xam）. A total.of 54 p.ssibl. ta-siRNA l.ci were identified in cassava, incl.ding a homo- l.g of TAS3, the best studied p.0}nt ta-siRNA. Fifteen of these l.ci were induced, whil. 39 were rep.essed in resp.nse to Xam infection. In addition, 15 p.ssibl. c/s-natural.antisense transcrip. （cis-NAT） l.ci p.oducing siRNAs were identified from overl.p.ing antisense regions in the genome, and were found to be differential.y exp.essed up.n Xam infection. Rol.s of sRNAs were p.edicted by sequence comp.0}mentarity and our resul.s showed that many sRNAs identified in this work might be directed against various transcrip.ion factors.
