decomposition and stabilization of organic matter in an old-growth tropical riparian forest:effects of soil properties and vegetation structure

Background:Nutrient cycling in tropical forests has a large importance for primary productivity,and decomposition of litterfall is a major process influencing nutrient balance in forest *** large-scale factors strongly influence decomposition patterns,small-scale factors can have major influences,especially in old-growth forests that have high structural complexity and strong plant-soil *** we evaluated the effects of forest structure and soil properties on decomposition rates and stabilization of soil organic matter using the Tea Bag Index(TBI)in an old-growth riparian forest in southeastern *** data sets were described separately using Principal Components Analysis(PCA).The main axes for each analysis,together with soil physical properties(clay content and soil moisture),were used to construct structural equations models that evaluated the different parameters of the TBI,decomposition rates and stabilization *** best model was selected using Akaike’s ***:Forest structure and soil physical and chemical properties presented large variation among plots within the studied *** content was strongly correlated with soil moisture and the first PCA axis of soil chemical properties,and model selection indicated that clay content was a better predictor than this *** rates presented a large variation among tea bags(0.009 and 0.098 g·g^(−1)·d−1)and were positively related with forest structure,as characterized by higher basal area,tree density and larger *** stabilization factor varied between 0.211–0.426 and was related to forest stratification and soil clay ***:The old-growth forest studied presented high heterogeneity in both forest structure and soil properties at small spatial scales,that influenced decomposition processes and probably contributed to small-scale variation in nutrient *** rates were only influenced by forest structure,whereas the stabilizat

A quantitative ^(1)H NMR method(qHNMR)was used to measure the trigonelline content in the leaves of six species of the Annona *** methodology employed compared the intensities of the signals at δ9.14(H-2)andδ0.00,the internal standard TSP-d_(4).This measuring method was able to establish the concentration of trigonelline in the range from 0.67 to 10.04 mg·g^(-1) depending on the investigated extract.

Water management infrastructures such as floodgates are critical and increasingly operated by Industrial Control Systems(ICS).These systems are becoming more connected to the internet,either directly or through the corporate *** makes them vulnerable to *** behaviour in floodgates operated by ICS could be caused by both(intentional)attacks and(accidental)technical *** operators notice abnormal behaviour,they should be able to distinguish between those two causes to take appropriate measures,because for example replacing a sensor in case of intentional incorrect sensor measurements would be ineffective and would not block corresponding the attack *** the previous work,we developed the attack-failure distinguisher framework for constructing Bayesian Network(BN)models to enable operators to distinguish between those two causes,including the knowledge elicitation method to construct the directed acyclic graph and conditional probability tables of BN *** a full case study of the attack-failure distinguisher framework,this paper presents a BN model constructed to distinguish between attacks and technical failures for the problem of incorrect sensor measurements in floodgates,addressing the problem of floodgate *** utilised experts who associate themselves with the safety and/or security community to construct the BN model and validate the qualitative part of constructed BN *** constructed BN model is usable in water management infrastructures to distinguish between intentional attacks and accidental technical failures in case of incorrect sensor *** could help to decide on appropriate response strategies and avoid further complications in case of incorrect sensor measurements.

Application of data science in the prediction of solar energy for the Amazon basin:a study case

The gain of transcription factor binding sites(TFBS) is believed to represent one of the major causes of biological *** we used strategies based on comparative genomics to identify 21,822 TFBS specific to the human lineage(TFBS-HS),when compared to chimpanzee and gorilla genomes. More than 40%(9,206) of these TFBS-HS are in the vicinity of 1,283 genes.A comparison of the expression pattern of these genes and the corresponding orthologs in chimpanzee and gorilla identified genes differentially expressed in human tissues. These genes show a more divergent expression pattern in the human testis and brain, suggesting a role for positive selection in the fixation of TFBS gains. Genes associated with TFBS-HS were enriched in gene ontology categories related to transcriptional regulation, signaling, differentiation/development and nervous ***, genes associated with TFBS-HS present a higher expression breadth when compared to genes in general. This biased distribution is due to a preferential gain of TFBS in genes with higher expression breadth rather than a shift in the expression pattern after the gain of TFBS.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Submerged depth on the Horizontal Plate Wave Energy Converter

The growing search for clean and renewable energy sources has given rise to the studies of exploring sea wave energy. This paper is concerned with the numerical evaluation of the main operational principle of a submerged plate employed for the conversion of wave energy into electrical one. The numerical model used to solve the conservation equations of mass, momentum and transport of volume fraction is based on the finite volume method （FVM）. In order to tackle with the flow of mixture of air-water and its interaction with the device, the multiphase model volume of fluid （VOF） is employed. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of a numerical model for improvement of the knowledge about the submerged plate wave energy converter, as well as the investigation of the effect of the distance from the plate to the bottom of the sea （HP） on the performance of the converter. The simulations for several distances of the plate from the seabed show that the optimal efficiency is 64%, which is obtained for HP=0.53 m （88% of the depth）. This efficiency is 17% larger than that found in the worst case （HP=0.46 m, 77% of the depth）.

Soil salinity is among the abiotic stressors that threaten agriculture the most,and purslane(Portulaca oleracea l.)is a dicot species adapted to inland salt desert and saline habitats that hyper accumulates salt and has high phytoremediation *** researchers consider purslane a suitable model species to study the mechanisms of plant tolerance to drought and salt ***,a robust salinity stress protocol was developed and used to characterize the morphophysiological responses of young purslane plants to salinity stress;then,leaf tissue underwent characterization by distinct omics platforms to gain further insights into its response to very high salinity *** salinity stress protocol did generate different levels of stress by gradients of electrical conductivity at field capacity and water potential in the saturation extract of the substrate,and the morphological parameters indicated three distinct stress *** expected from a halophyte species,these plants remained alive under very high levels of salinity stress,showing salt crystal-like structures constituted mainly by Na^(+),Cl^(−),and K^(+)on and around closed stomata.A comprehensive and large-scale metabolome and transcriptome single and integrated analyses were then employed using leaf *** multi-omics integration(MOI)system analysis led to a data-set of 51 metabolic pathways with at least one enzyme and one metabolite differentially expressed due to salinity *** data sets(of genes and metabolites)are valuable for future studies aimed to deepen our knowledge on the mechanisms behind the high tolerance of this species to salinity *** conclusion,besides showing that this species applies salt exclusion already in young plants to support very high levels of salinity stress,the initial analysis of metabolites and transcripts data sets already give some insights into other salt tolerance mechanisms used by this species to support high levels of salinity stress.
