Sticky deposits caused by wood pitch remain a severe problem in papermaking when using mechanical pulps, such as thermomechanical pulp（TMP）.Formation of deposits on paper machines is dependent on aggregation of colloidal pitch. The stability of colloidal wood pitch droplets towards electrolyte-induced aggregation by CaCl was determined in suspensions of unbleached and peroxide-bleached TMP. The colloidal stability was not significantly affected by addition of unbleached or peroxide-bleached TMP,in the absence of *** of CaCl caused destabilization of colloidal pitch at both pH 5 and pH 8,and to a higher degree if TMP was present. The colloidal stability of pitch was much higher at pH 8 than at pH *** of CaCl at pH 8 resulted in formation of calcium-resinates,which can be very detrimental to the papermaking ***-resinates do not have affinity to TMP or colloidal pitch droplets,and are therefore difficult to control in a process. Calcium ions were deemed the cause of destabilization and aggregation of colloidal pitch in these experiments. The concentration of free calcium should be kept as low as possible to prevent uncontrolled aggregation of pitch.

Genomic selection,the application of genomic prediction(GP)models to select candidate individuals,has significantly advanced in the past two decades,effectively accelerating genetic gains in plant *** article provides a holistic overview of key factors that have influenced GP in plant breeding during this *** delved into the pivotal roles of training population size and genetic diversity,and their relationship with the breeding population,in determining GP *** emphasis was placed on optimizing training population *** explored its benefits and the associated diminishing returns beyond an optimum *** was done while considering the balance between resource allocation and maximizing prediction accuracy through current optimization *** density and distribution of single-nucleotide polymorphisms,level of linkage disequilibrium,genetic complexity,trait heritability,statistical machine-learning methods,and non-additive effects are the other vital *** wheat,maize,and potato as examples,we summarize the effect of these factors on the accuracy of GP for various *** search for high accuracy in GP—theoretically reaching one when using the Pearson’s correlation as a metric—is an active research area as yet far from optimal for various *** hypothesize that with ultra-high sizes of genotypic and phenotypic datasets,effective training population optimization methods and support from other omics approaches(transcriptomics,metabolomics and proteomics)coupled with deep-learning algorithms could overcome the boundaries of current limitations to achieve the highest possible prediction accuracy,making genomic selection an effective tool in plant breeding.

Human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) have been reported to completely lack of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) which is composed of Ku protein and the catalytic subunit DNA-PKcs, needed for nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) of DNA double-strand breaks. Promyelocytic HL-60 cells express a variant form of Ku resulting in enhanced radiation sensitivity. This raises the question if low efficiency of NHEJ, instrumental for the cellular repair of oxidative damage, is a normal characteristic of myeloid differentiation. Here we confirmed the complete lack of DNA-PK in PMN protein extracts, and the expression of the truncated Ku86 variant form in HL-60. However, this degradation of DNA-PK was shown to be due to a DNA-PK-degrading protease in PMN and HL-60. In addition, by using a protease-resistant whole cell assay, both Ku86 and DNA-PKcs could be demonstrated in PMN, suggesting the previously reported absence in PMN of DNA-PK to be an artefact.
