Birds and other animals are frequently killed by cars,causing the death of many million individuals per *** some species are killed more often than others has never been *** this work hypothesized that risk taking behavior may affect the probability of certain kinds of individuals being killed disproportionately ***,behavior of individuals on roads,abundance,habitat preferences,breeding sociality,and health status may all potentially affect the risk of being killed on *** used information on the abundance of road kills and the abundance in the surrounding environment of 50 species of birds obtained during regular censuses in 2001 2006 in a rural site in Denmark to test these *** frequency of road kills increased linearly with abundance,while the proportion of individuals sitting on the road or flying low across the road only explained little additional variation in frequency of road *** having accounted for abundance,we found that species with a short flight distance and hence taking greater risks when approached by a potential cause of danger were killed disproportionately *** addition,solitary species,species with a high prevalence of Plasmodium infection,and species with a large bursa of Fabricius for their body size had a high susceptibility to being killed by *** findings suggest that a range of different factors indicative of risk-taking behavior,visual acuity and health status cause certain bird species to be susceptible to casualties due to cars.

many organisms are characterized by strikingly contrasting black and white coloration,but the function of such contrasts has been inadequately *** this article,we tested the function of black and white contrasting plumage in white stork Ciconia ciconia *** found greater abundance and diversity of microorganisms on black compared with adjacent white *** addition,nest size was positively correlated with the abundance and diversity of microorganisms on white *** initiation distance(FID),defined as the distance at which adult white storks took flight when approached by a human,was negatively correlated with most measurements of microorganism *** success was generally positively correlated with the abundance and diversity of microorganisms on black *** feather growth rate was positively correlated with some and negatively correlated with other measurements of microbial abundance and ***,chick growth was negatively correlated with the number of microbial species on black feathers and positively with the abundance and diversity of microorganisms on white *** findings are consistent not only with the role of microorganisms in the maintenance of a benign microbial environment which differs between black and white feathers,but also with the hypothesis that several taxa of microorganisms found in black and white plumage are virulent,with negative effects on the fitness of their hosts.

Background:Floods and other extreme events have disastrous effects on wetland breeding ***,such events and their consequences are difficult to study due to their rarity and unpredictable ***:Here we compared nest-sites chosen by Reed Parrotbills(Paradoxornis heudei) during June-August 2016 in Yongnianwa Wetlands,Hebei Province,China,before and after an extreme flooding ***:Twenty-three nests were identified before and 13 new nests after the *** was no significant difference in most nest-site characteristics,such as distance from the road,height of the reeds in which nests were built,or nest volume before or after the ***,nests after the flood were located significantly higher in the vegetation compared to before the flood(mean ± SE:1.17 ± 0.13 m vs.0.75 ± 0.26 m,p monstrated behavioral plasticity in their nest-site ***,they appeared to increase the height of their nests in response to the drastically changing water levels in reed wetlands,to reduce the likelihood that their nests would be submerged again by ***,predation rate also increased significantly after the flood,suggesting that the change in nest height to combat the threat of flooding made the nests more susceptible to other threats,such as ***' response to rare climatic events,such as flooding,may produce ecological traps if they make the animals more susceptible to other kinds of threats they are more likely to continue to encounter.

Selection due to cuckoo parasitism is responsible for the evolution of anti-parasitism defenses in *** host species breeding sympatrically with a single parasitic cuckoo may evolve different strategies to reduce the risk of counter cuckoo parasitism,resulting in different interactions between cuckoos and hosts in areas of ***,we studied the coevolutionary interactions between Himalayan cuckoos Cuculus saturatus and 2 sympatric and closely related potential hosts belonging to the family Pycnonotidae,the brown-breasted bulbul Pycnonotus xanthorrhous and the collared finchbill Spizixos *** investigated parasitism rates and nest-site selection(nest height,nest cover,human disturbance,perch height,forest distance,and degree of concealment)related to parasitism risk,nest defense against a cuckoo dummy,and egg rejection against cuckoo model *** used specific nest sites that were further away from forests than those of finchbills,and they behaved more aggressively toward cuckoos than *** contrast,bulbuls possessed moderate egg rejection ability,whereas the finchbill rejected 100%of cuckoo model *** suggest that selection of a nest site away from forests by the bulbul explains the absence of parasitism by Himalayan *** suggest that these interspecific differences in nest-site selection and nest defense indicate alternative responses to selection due to cuckoos.

Hole-nesting tits Parus *** been classified as"unsuitable"hosts for cuckoo parasitism because cuckoos cannot enter a cavity if the entrance is too ***,Chinese tits could re-ject alien eggs and egg ejection rate increased with the local diversity of parasitic cuckoo *** behavior among Chinese tits may have evolved due to greater size variation among sympatric cuckoo *** raises the question of whether differently sized parasitic cuckoos pose different threats to Chinese tits.A green-backed tit Parus monticolus population that is sym-patric with Asian emerald cuckoo Chrysococcyx maculatus(eme-cuckoo,small-sized parasite)and common cuckoo Cuculus canorus(com-cuckoo,large-sized parasite),and a cinereous tit *** population that is only sympatric with com-cuckoo were chosen as study *** observed behavioral response and recorded alarm calls of the 2 tit species to eme-cuckoo,com-cuckoo,chipmunk Tamias sibiricus(a nest predator)and dove Streptopelia orientalis(a harm-less control),and subsequently played back alarm calls to conspecific incubating *** dummy experiments,both tit species performed intense response behavior to chipmunk,but rarely responded strongly to the 3 avian *** playback experiments,both tit species responded strongly to conspecific chipmunk alarm calls,but rarely responded to dove alarm *** inten-sity of response of incubating female green-backed tits to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm calls were similar to that of chipmunk alarm calls,while the intensity to eme-cuckoo alarm calls was higher than the intensity to dove alarm calls which was similar to that of com-cuckoo alarm *** contrast,few female cinereous tits responded to eme-cuckoo and com-cuckoo alarm *** findings indicated that the threat level of eme-cuckoo was slightly greater than that of com-cuckoo for sympatric green-backed tits,but not for allopatric cinereous tits.

Although egg color polymorphism has evolved as an effective defensive adaptation to brood parasitism,spatial variations in egg color polymorphism remain poorly ***,we investigated egg polymorphism in 647 host species(68 families and 231 gen era)parasitized by 41 species of Old Word cuckoos(1 family and 11 gen era)across Asia,Europe,Africa,and *** diversity of parasitic cuckoos differs among continents,reflecting the continent-specific intensities of parasitic selection pressure on ***,host egg polymorphism is expected to evolve more frequently on continents with higher cuckoo *** identified egg polymorphism in 24.1%of all host species and 47.6%of all host *** common cuckoo Cuculus canorus utilized 184 hosts(28.4%of all host species).Hosts of the common cuckoo and of Chrysococcyx species were more likely to have polymorphic eggs than hosts parasitized by other *** the number of host species and the host families targeted by the cuckoo species were positively correlated with the frequency of host egg *** host species and most hosts exhibiting egg color polymorphism were located in Asia and *** egg polymorphism was observed less frequently in Australia and *** results also suggested that egg polymorphism tends to occur more frequently in hosts that are utilized by several cuckoo species or by generalist cuckoo *** suggest that selecti on pressure on hosts from a given contin ent in creases proportionally to the number of cuckoo species,and that this selection pressure may,in turn,favor the evolution of host egg polymorphism.

Background:The abundance of insects has decreased considerably during recent decades,resulting in current abundance showing 70-80%reductions in more than 15 studies across temperate climate *** reduc-tions in the abundance of insects are likely to have consequences for other taxa at higher trophic levels such as preda-tors and ***,fertilizers and agricultural land use are likely candidates accounting for such reductions in the abundance of ***:Here we surveyed the abundance of flying insects,and the reduction in the abundance of insects as a consequence of intensive reduction in agricultural practice linked to fertilizer use and pesticide *** we dem-onstrated consistency in abundance of birds among study ***:We demonstrated that the use of fertilizers and pesticides had reduced the abundance of insects,with consequences for the abundance of insectivorous bird species such as Barn Swallows(Hirundo rustica),House martins(Delichon urbicum)and Swifts(Apus apus).Juvenile Barn Swallows were negatively affected by the reduced abundance of insects and hence the reproductive success of insectivorous bird *** effects imply that the abundance of insects could be reduced by the availability of insect ***:These effects of intensive agriculture on insect food abundance are likely to have negative impacts on populations of insects and their avian *** hypothesis was validated by a reduction in the abundance of insects,linked to an increase in the abundance of fertilizers and a general change in farming practice.

Sex differences in plumage color are common in bird *** bird species are regarded as sexually monochromatic in human visual systems,and in recent years,some species are found to be of cryptic(to human)sexual dichromatism by spectrophotometric ***,the functions of plumage color are still less understood in these ***,we focused on plumage color traits in the Chestnut Thrush(Turdus rubrocanus),which is considered as a sexually monochromatic bird by human *** used spectrometer analyses and avian visual modeling to investigate the color traits of males and females,and whether these color traits are involved in assortative *** found that Chestnut Thrush showed sexual dichromatism in bill,throat and wing,and pairs mated assortatively with colorations of throat,chest,crown and *** also found that color of tarsus was different between two consecutive *** results revealed that Chestnut Thrush is sexually dichromatic in the avian visual system,and plumage color traits play important roles in mate choice.

岛屿动物中的性选择强度不高 ,其原因可能是由于岛屿种群的遗传变异性水平较低。本文作者检验了鸟类岛屿种群是否具有较低的遗传变异性、性选择强度大的种群是否具有较高的突变输入率 (rateofmu tationalinput) ,在鸟类岛屿种群中是否具有较低的性选择强度 (可以根据配偶外父亲身份的频率来估计 )。小卫星共有谱带系数 (minisatellitebandsharingcoefficient)可确定无亲源关系个体之间的遗传变异性 ,对与遗传变异性有关的雄性个体的父亲 (paternity)进行了成对比较以检验如下假说 :在具有较多遗传变异的种群中 ,雌性个体更经常地进行配偶外交配。在小卫星共有谱带系数较低的鸟类种群中 ,配偶外父亲的频次较高。对岛屿和大陆鸟类进行的第二个比较分析表明 :岛屿种群中的配偶外父亲频次较低 ,遗传变异性也较低 ,其部分原因在于突变输入 (mutationalinput)减少。上述发现表明 :( 1)父亲确认程度 ( par ternity)随遗传变异性的数量而增加 ;( 2 )在遗传变异性较大的种群中 ,突变率较高 ,性选择的程度更激烈 ;( 3)岛屿种群中性选择的强度一般比大陆种群弱。这对于理解遗传变异性的空间变异、理解岛屿种群和其它隔离种群的保护问题有重要启示。
