Although it has been proven that porous,heteroatomic,and defective structures improve Na storage performance,they also severely affect the initial Coulombic efficiency(ICE)due to the huge irreversible capacity in the first cycle,which always limits the practical application of carbon anodes in commercial Na-ion batteries(NIBs).Here,we show the successful synthesis of nanocrystalline cellulose and the derivative hard carbons.A series of treatments including acid hydrolysis,hydrothermal carbonization,and hightemperature pyrolysis help tune the pores,heteroatoms,and defects to achieve an optimized balance between superior ICE and reversible capacity of up to 90.4%and 314 mAh g^(−1).This study highlights that tailoring the electrode microstructure could be an important strategy in the future design of carbonaceous anode materials for high-performance Na-ion batteries.

Procalcitonin as a marker of infection in febrile neutropenia:A systematic review

Aim: Management of febrile neutropenia is challenged by lacking microbiological and clinical documentation of infection. Procalcitonin is emerging as a new promising biomarker of infection. We aimed to undertake a systematic review evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin as a marker of infection in febrile neutropenia. Methods: We performed a systematic re- view of the literature using the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library including a search of the grey literature (e.g. unpublished data, web sides of relevant societies). The methodological quality was assessed using predefined criteria. The relevant data were extracted and analyzed by two authors. Results: The literature search yielded a total of 193 studies of which nine were eligible for inclusion. There was a great variation in the quality of the methodological design. A notable heterogeneity exists regarding the studied populations and the definition of the reference standards. Among the nine included studies the sensitivity ranged from 42% to 72% and the specificity ranged from 64% - 89% at a cut off value ranging from 0.5 - 0.8 ng/ml. The studied endpoint was either microbiologically or clinically documented infection. Four studies found procalcitonin superior to Creactive protein in discriminating infection from the various other causes of fever. Conclusion: Procalcitonin appears to be a promising biomarker and might add new diagnostic information in the management of febrile neutropenia.

Doctor,Ease My Mind!Associations between Cancer Patients’Emotional Distress and Their Perception of Patient-Centeredness during Oncology Consultations

Objective: To investigate whether perceived patient-centered communication during oncology consultations relates to patient satisfaction and degree of emotional distress following the medical encounter. Methods: 226 cancer patients attending an oncology outpatient clinic completed questionnaires before and after a consultation including the Physician-Patient Relationship Inventory, the brief Profile of Mood States, and the Information satisfaction questionnaire. Results: Patients who perceived the communication during the consultations to be highly patient-centered were more likely to be maximally satisfied with information provided by the oncologist. Additionally, adjusting for pre-consultation distress, as well as sociodemographic, clinical, and consultation-related variables, patients who perceived the oncologist to communicate in a highly patient-centered manner, experienced lower levels of emotional distress after the consultation. Conclusion: Patient-centered communication may be an important quality in oncology as an approach to positively influence patient outcomes, including emotional distress. However, the findings in the present study of an effect of PCC on patient satisfaction and emotional distress are modest, and no firm conclusions can thus be drawn. Practice Implications: Oncology settings may benefit from the positive effects of patient-centered care and physicians should acknowledge the potential of their own relational competence in order to facilitate patient-centered communication.

Microbial fuel cells(MFCs)rely on microbial conversion of organic substrates to *** optimal performance depends on the establishment of a microbial community rich in electrogenic *** this microbial community is established from inoculation of the MFC anode chamber with naturally occurring mixed *** this study,the electrochemical performance of MFCs and microbial community evolution were evaluated for three inocula including domestic wastewater(DW),lake sediment(LS)and biogas sludge(BS)with varying substrate loading(L_(sub))and external resistance(R_(ext))on the *** electrogenic bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens was identified in all inocula and its abundance during MFC operation was positively linked to the MFC *** LS inoculated MFCs showed highest abundance(18% ± 1%)of ***,maximum current density [I_(max)=(690 ± 30)m A·m^(-2)] and coulombic efficiency(CE = 29% ± 1%)with acetate as the *** CE increased to(1780 ± 30)m A·m^(-2)and 58% ± 1%,respectively,after decreasing the R_(ext) from 1000 Ω to 200 Ω,which also correlated to a higher abundance of ***(21% ± 0.7%)on the MFC anodic *** data obtained contribute to understanding the microbial community response to Lsub and R_(ext)for optimizing electricity generation in MFCs.
