New risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes

This paper presents a new risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes. This new empirical-statistical *** assessment m. ethodology （SSAM! is intended for use by geotechnical engineers at both the design review and operational stages of a mine＇s life to categonse the risk of an excavated coal mine slope. A likelihood of failure is determined using a new slope stability classification system for excavated coal mine slopes developed using a database of 119 intact and failed case studies sourced from open cut coal mines in Australia. Consequence of failure is based on slope height and stand-off distance at the toe of the excavated slope. Results are presented in a new risk matrix, with slope risk being divided into low, medium and high categories. The SSAM is put forward as a new risk assess- ment methodology to assess the potential for, and consequence of, excavated coal mine slope failure. Unlike existing classification systems, assumptions about the likely failure mode or mechanism are not required. Instead, the SSAM applies an approach which compares the conditions present within the exca- vated slope face, with the known past performance of slopes with similar geotechnical and geometrical conditions, to estimate the slope＇s propensity for failure. The SSAM is novel in that it considers the depo- sitional history of strata in an excavated slope and how this sequence affects slope stability. It is further novel in that it does not require explicit measurements of intact rock, rock mass and/or defect strength to rapidly calculate a slope＇s likelihood of failure and overall risk. Ratings can be determined entirely from visual observations of the excavated slope face. The new SSAM is designed to be used in conjunction with existing slope stability assessment tools.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the safety and effi cacy of trans-epithelial accelerated corneal cross-linking（TE-ACXL） in children with progressive ***,case-series of 23 eyes of 14 children who underwent *** were performed at baseline and 1,3,6,12 and 18 mo *** follow-up time of 23.82±3.15 mo and mean age was 13.7±1.4 y（range 11 to 16 y）.Mean preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity changed from 0.92±0.45 log MAR（20/160） to 0.71±0.40 log MAR（20/100）（P=0.001）.Mean keratometry（Km） changed from 53.87± 6.03 to 53.00±5.81（P=0.001）.Pachymetry did not have significant changes at last follow-up（P=0.30）.The mean preoperative sphere was-5.58±2.48 and-4.89±4.66 D（P=0.11） at last follow-up;refractive cylinder from-5.58±2.48 to-5.02±2.23（P=0.046）.In conclusion,tomographic and refractive stability are shown in over 91% of eyes with pediatric progressive keratoconus who underwent TE-ACXL.

In this work,we focus on the structural and electronic properties of lanthanum mono-nitride s under high *** on firstprinciples calculations and crystal structure predictions,we identified an anti-ferroelectric orthogonal phase with space group *** is predicted to be thermodynamically stable from 20 to 60 GPa,above which the tetragonal phase without the antiferroelectric distortion will substitute ***,the anti-ferroelectric distortion can be enhancedby reducing the pressure,and a phase transition to a NiAs-type(B8,P63/mmc) structure occurs at about 20 *** calculated double-well potential for La atoms along the c direction in the B8 phase reveals that it should exhibit ferroelectric properties at low *** calculations well confirm their phase transition sequences under high *** properties calculations suggest that all the newly identified phases are semiconductors and the corresponding structural distortions can increase their *** increasing the pressure to 50 GPa,the tetragonal phase undergoes a semiconductor-to-semimetal *** the spin-orbit coupling into account,the semimetal phase becomes a topological insulator with a small ***,given the similarities between the ionic compounds LaN and BaO,we predict that the most stable phase for BaO at about 25 GPa should also be the anti-ferroelectric orthogonal phase instead of the tetragonal phase.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide,being the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of cancer-related *** incidence of HCC has been rising in the USA over the last 20 *** transplanta-tion is an optimal treatment option,as it eliminates HCC as well as the underlying liver *** Milan criteria(1 lesion greater than or equal to 2 cm and less than or equal to 5 cm,or up to 3 lesions,each greater than or equal to 1 cm and less than or equal to 3 cm)have been adopted by many transplant societies worldwide as the criteria to determine whether patients with HCC can move forward with liver ***,many believe that the Milan criteria may be too strict in regard to its size require-ments for *** has led to a number of expanded criteria for liver transplantation,concerning both overall size and number of lesions,as well as incorporation of other markers of tumor *** markers,such as alpha-fetoprotein,can also be used to follow treatment of HCC and possibly exclude patients from *** presenting beyond Milan criteria can also be down-staged with locore-gional *** response to locoregional therapy and longer wait times after locoregional therapy prior to transplant can serve as surrogate markers of tumor biology as well.

To document the medicinal plants used for the treatment of malaria by the Tetun ethnic people in West Timor–Indonesia. Methods: The ethnobotany and anthropology methods were used in the field surveys. Ninety four informants from 29 villages of 15 sub-districts in Belu and Malaka were interviewed since April to December 2017. Medicinal plants specimen were collected from the field and identified according to taxonomic methods. Results: Ninety six medicinal plants species belong to 41 families were found to be used by the Tetun ethnic people in their traditional medicine for the treatment of malaria. These plants have been used in various formulas for drinking, massage, bath, inhalation or cataplasm. Strychnos ligustrina, Calotropis gigantea, Cleome rutidosperma, Physalis angulata, Alstonia spectabilis, Carica papaya, Melia azedarach, Alstonia scholaris, Jatropha curcas, Garuga floribunda, and Tamarindus indicawere the most cited plants. Conclusions: The documented plants are valuable sources for the future development of new drugs and strategies to support malaria eliminating programs that are culturally acceptable in these areas.

THE ZnO powder （micro-crystallites）, an important functional material, has a wide applica-tion in the fields of ceramics, coatings and electronic devices. Leaf color patterns vary depending on leaf age,pathogen infection,and environmental and nutritional stresses;thus,they are widely used to diagnose plant health statuses in agricultural *** visible-near infrared-shortwave infrared(VIS-NIR-SWIR)sensor measures the leaf color pattern from a wide spectral range with high spectral ***,spectral information has only been employed to understand general plant health statuses(e.g.,vegetation index)or phytopigment contents,rather than pinpointing defects of specific metabolic or signaling pathways in ***,we report feature engineering and machine learning methods that utilize VIS-NIR-SWIR leaf reflectance for robust plant health diagnostics,pinpointing physiological alterations associated with the stress hormone,abscisic acid(ABA).Leaf reflectance spectra of wild-type,ABA2-overexpression,and deficient plants were collected under watered and drought ***-and ABA-associated normalized reflectance indices(NRIs)were screened from all possible pairs of wavelength *** associated NRIs showed only a partial overlap with those related to ABA deficiency,but more NRIs were associated with drought due to additional spectral changes within the NIR wavelength *** support vector machine classifiers built with 20 NRIs predicted treatment or genotype groups with an accuracy greater than those with conventional vegetation *** selected NRIs were independent from leaf water content and chlorophyll content,2 well-characterized physiological changes under *** screening of NRIs,streamlined with the development of simple classifiers,serves as the most efficient means of detecting reflectance bands that are highly relevant to characteristics of interest.

This study investigates the testate amoeba communities of a large peatland in Central China. The ecology and seasonal variability of testate amoeba communities were studied during 2009-2010. Investiga- tion of environmental controls using ordination showed that the relationship between testate amoeba communities and depth to water table （DWT） and pH are extremely weak. The small proportion of variance explained by water table depth here （only 1.9% in the full data） shows that the hydrological control is weaker than we expected in this peatland, and weaker than any study we are aware of using a similar methodology. Attempts to develop species- environment （transfer function） models or identify indi- cator species for future palaeoecological studies were unsuccessful. Previous large-scale studies of peatland testate amoeba ecology have been largely restricted to Europe and North America and results have been relatively consistent among studies. Our results contrast with this consensus and suggest that at least in minerotrophic peatlands in China testate amoeba communities may be primarily controlled by different environmental variables. In China, testate amoebae have been relatively little studied but may prove to be valuable for a variety of applications in palaeoecology and biomonitoring and much further work is required.
