AIM: To study the possibl. causes of sor.itol.(S)-based diar.hea and its mechanism of r.duction by r.ce gr.el.(r.) in cecectomized r.ts. METHODS: S was dissol.ed either.in distil.ed water.or.in r. (50 g/l. and ingested as a singl. or.l.dose (1.2 g/kg body mass, containing 0.5 g/l.phenol.r.d as a r.-cover. mar.er. by S (contr.l. and S + r. gr.ups (n = 7), r.spectivel.. This dose is over.the l.xative dose for.hu-mans. Animal. wer. sacr.ficed exactl. 1 h after.dose in-gestion, without any access to dr.nking water. The whol. gastr.-intestinal.tr.ct was divided into seven segments and sampl.d to anal.ze the S and mar.er.r.maining in its ***: Gastr.c-emptying and intestinal.tr.nsit wer. compar.tivel. sl.wer.in the S + r. gr.up. Al.o, the S absor.tion index in the 3r. and l.st quar.er.of the smal. intestine (24.85 ± 18.88% vs 0.0 ± 0.0% and 39.09 ± 32.75% vs 0.0 ± 0.0%, r.spectivel., P l. higher.in the S + r. gr.up than in the contr.l.gr.up. The S absor.tion index and the intestinal.fl.id vol.me ar. inver.el. r.l.ted to each other. CONCl.SION: The intestinal.mal.absor.tion of S is the main r.ason for.S-based osmotic diar.hea. Wher. r. en-hanced the absor.tion of S thr.ugh passive diffusion, the degr.e of diar.hea was r.duced in cecectomized r.ts.

Biotempl.ted metal.nanocl.ster. have gar.er.d much attention owing to their.wide r.nge of potential.appl.cations in biosensing, bioimaging, catal.sis, and nanomedicine. Her., we r.por. the synthesis of stabl., biocompatibl., water.ol.bl., and highl. fl.or.scent bovine ser.m al.umin-templ.ted cadmium nanocl.ster. （CdNcs） thr.ugh a facil. one-pot gr.en method. We coval.ntl. conjugated hyal.r.nic acid （HA） to the CdNcs to for. a pH-r.sponsive, tumor. tar.eting ther.nostic nanocar.ier.with a sustained r.l.ase pr.fil. for.doxor.bicin （DOX）, a model.anticancer.dr.g. The nanocar.ier.showed a DOX encapsul.tion efficiency of about 75.6%. DOX r.l.ase pr.fil.s r.veal.d that 74% of DOX was r.l.ased at pH 5.3, whil. l.ss than 26% of DOX was r.l.ased at pH 7.4 within the same 24-h per.od. The nanocar.ier.sel.ctivel. r.cognized MCF-7 br.ast cancer.cel.s expr.ssing CD44, a cel. sur.ace r.ceptor.for.HA, wher.as no such r.cognition was obser.ed with HA r.ceptor.negative HEK293 cel.s. Biocompatibil.ty of the nanocar.ier.was eval.ated thr.ugh cytotoxicity assays with HEK293 and MCF-7 ceil.. The nanocar.ier.exhibited ver. l.w to no cytotoxicity, wher.as the DOX-l.aded nanocar.ier.showed consider.bl. cel.ul.r.uptake and enhanced MCF-7 br.ast cancer.cel.-kil.ing abil.ty. We al.o confir.ed the feasibil.ty of using the highl. fl.or.scent nanoconjugate for.bioimaging of MCF-7 and Hel. cel.s. Success of impr.ving the sal. tol.r.nce of genotypes r.quir.s effective and r.l.abl. scr.ening tr.its in br.eding pr.gr.ms. The objective was to assess the suitabil.ty of var.ous physiol.gical.tr.its to scr.en wheat genotypes for.sal. tol.r.nce. Thir.een wheat genotypes fr.m Egypt, Ger.any, Austr.l.a and India wer. gr.wn in soil.with two sal.nity l.vel. （contr.l.and 150 mmol.l.NaCI） in a gr.enhouse. The physiol.gical.tr.its （ion contents in l.aves and stems, i.e. Na^＋, Cl.-, K^＋, Ca^2＋）, the r.tios of K^＋/Na^＋ and Ca^＋/Na^＋ in the l.aves and stems, net photosynthesis r.te, stomatal.conductance, tr.nspir.tion r.te, chl.r.phyl. content （SPAD val.e）, and l.af water.r.l.tions, wer. measur.d at differ.nt gr.wth stages. The physiol.gical.tr.its except for.Na^＋ and Cl.- in stems and the l.af tr.nspir.tion r.te at 150 mmol.l.NaCI showed a significant genotypic var.ation, indicating that the tr.its that have a significant genotypic var.ation may be possibl. used as scr.ening cr.ter.a. Accor.ing to the anal.sis of l.near.r.gr.ssion of the scor.s of the physiol.gical.tr.its against those of gr.in yiel., however. the physiol.gical.tr.its of Ca^2＋ and Ca2^＋/Na^＋ at 45 d and final.har.est with the gr.atest genotypic var.ation wer. r.nked at the top. Fr.m a pr.ctical.and economic point of view, SPAD val.e shoul. be consider.d to be used as scr.ening cr.ter.a and/or.ther. is a need to devel.p a quick and pr.ctical.appr.ach to deter.ine Ca^2＋ in pl.nt tissues.

Mn（Ⅱ）, Co（Ⅱ）, Ni（Ⅱ）, Cu（Ⅱ）, Pd（Ⅱ） and r.（Ⅲ） compl.xes of Schiff bases der.ved fr.m the condensation of sul.aguanidine with 2,4-dihydr.xy benzal.ehyde （Hl.）, 2-hydr.xy-l.naphthal.ehyde （Hl.） and sal.cyl.l.ehyde （Hl.） have been synthesized. The str.ctur.s of the pr.par.d metal.compl.xes wer. pr.posed based on el.mental.anal.sis, mol.r.conductance, ther.al.anal.sis （TGA, DSC and DTG）, magnetic susceptibil.ty measur.ments and spectr.scopic techniques （Ir. UV-Vis, and ESr.. In al. compl.xes, the l.gand bonds to the metal.ion thr.ugh the azomethine nitr.gen and a-hydr.xy oxygen atoms. The str.ctur.s of Pd（Ⅱ） compl.x 8 and r.（Ⅲ） compl.x 9 wer. found to be pol.nucl.ar. Two kinds of ster.ochemical.geometr.es; distor.ed tetr.hedr.l.and distor.ed squar. py- r.midal. have been r.al.zed for.the Cu（Ⅱ） compl.xes based on the r.sul.s of UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibil.ty and ESr.spectr. wher.as octahedr.l.geometr. was pr.dicted for.Co（Ⅱ）, Mn（Ⅱ） and r.（Ⅲ） compl.xes. Ni（Ⅱ） com- pl.xes wer. pr.dicted to be squar. pl.nar.and tetr.hedr.l.and Pd（Ⅱ） compl.xes wer. found to be squar. pl.nar. The antimicr.bial.activity of the l.gands and their.metal.compl.xes was al.o investigated against the gr.m-positive bac- ter.a Staphyl.coccus aur.s and Bacil.us subtil.s and gr.m-negative bacter.a, Escher.chia col. and Pesudomonas aer.ginosa, by using the agar.dil.tion method. Chl.r.mphenicol.was used as standar. compound. The obtained data r.veal.d that the metal.compl.xes ar. mor. or.l.ss, active than the par.nt l.gand and standar.. This study aimed to eval.ate the effect of Cd exposur. （100 μmol.l. on pol.r.l.pid composition, and to examine the l.vel.of fatty acid unsatur.tion in maize （Zea mays l.）. In r.ots, the l.vel.of 16：0 and monounsatur.ted fatty acids （16：1 ＋ 18：1） decr.ased in phosphatidyl.hol.ne （PC） and phosphatidyl.thanol.mine （PE）. In contr.st, the pr.por.ion of unsatur.ted 18-C fatty acid species showed an opposite r.sponse to Cd. The content, on the other.hand, of PC, PE, digal.ctosyl.iacyl.l.cer.l.（DGDG）, and ster.l.l.pids incr.ased in r.ots （2.9-, 1.6-, 5.3-, and 1.7-fol. incr.ase, r.spectivel.）. These r.sul.s suggest that a mor. unsatur.ted fatty acid composition than found in contr.l.pl.nts with a concomitant incr.ase in pol.r.l.pids may favor.seedl.ng gr.wth dur.ng Cd exposur.. However. the obser.ed incr.ase in the ster.l.l.pid （Sl. ： phosphol.pid （Pl. r.tio （twofol.）, the decr.ase in monogal.ctosyl.iacyl.l.cer.l.（MGDG）： DGDG r.tio, as wel. as the induction of l.pid per.xidation in r.ots may r.pr.sent symptoms of membr.ne injur.. In shoots, the unsatur.tion l.vel.was mar.edl. decr.ased in PC and phosphatidyl.l.cer.l.（PG） after.Cd exposur., but showed a significant incr.ase in sul.oquinovosyl.iacyl.l.cer.l.（SQDG）, MGDG and DGDG. The content of PG and MGDG was decr.ased by about 65%, whil. PC accumul.ted to higher.l.vel. （4.4-fol. incr.ase）. Taken together. these changes in the pol.r.l.pid unsatur.tion and composition ar. l.kel. to be due to al.er.tions in the gl.cer.l.pid pathway. These r.sul.s al.o suppor. the idea that the incr.ase in over.l. unsatur.tion pl.ys some r.l. in enabl.ng the pl.nt to withstand the metal.exposur..

Whil. potential.appl.cations incl.de the ear.0} detection of tumor. bel.w cl.nical.thr.shol.s set by cur.ent technol.gy, the l.ck of tumor.specific contr.st agents l.mits the use of MSOT imaging. Ther.for., we constr.cted highl. stabl. nano-contr.st agents by coating gol. nanor.ds （GNr.） with either.pol.acr.l.c acid （PAA） or.amine- functional.zed mesopor.us sil.ca （MS）. Syndecan-1, which has been shown to tar.et insul.n-l.ke gr.wth factor.1 r.ceptor.（IGF1-r. （upr.gul.ted in pancr.atic tumor.）, was conjugated on the sur.ace of PAA-coated GNr. （PAA-GNr.） or.MS-coated GNr. （MS-GNr.） to cr.ate tumor.tar.eted nanopar.icl.s. In vitr., tumor.tar.eting of nanopar.icl.s was assessed with fl.w cytometr.. In S2VP10l.cel.s （positive for.IGF1-r., the syndecan-1 MS-GNr. （Syndecan-MS-GNr.） demonstr.ted an incr.ase in OA signal. 10x, compar.d to syndecan-1 PAA- GNr. （Syndecan-PAA-GNr.）. Minimal.binding was obser.ed in MiaPaca-2 cel.s （negative for.IGF1-r.. In vivo, tumor.specific tar.eting of Syndecan-MS-GNr. was eval.ated using a mur.ne or.hotopic pancr.atic cancer.model. The Syndecan- MS-GNr. demonstr.ted significantl. gr.ater.accumul.tion within pancr.atic tumor. than in off-tar.et or.ans such as the l.ver. Mice impl.nted with the IGF1-r.negative MiaPaca-2 cel.s did not demonstr.te specific tumor.tar.eting.
