BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection(CDI)has increased in prevalence during the last *** coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has negatively influenced patient *** majority of the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)-infected patients received antibiotics during *** To analyze the factors that influenced CDI development after SARS-CoV-2 *** Between March 2020 to December 2020,we performed a prospective observational study including 447 patients diagnosed with CDI who were admitted to our tertiary referral university *** diagnosis of CDI was based on the presence of diarrhea(≥3 watery stools within 24 h)associated with Clostridium difficile toxins A or *** excluded patients with other etiology of acute *** Among the total 447(12.5%)patients with CDI,most were male(54.3%)and mean age was 59.7±10.8 ***-six(17.0%)had history of COVID-19,most being elderly(COVID-19:62.6±14.6 years vs non-COVID-19:56.8±17.6 years,P=0.007),with history of alcohol consumption(43.4%vs 29.4%,P=0.017),previous hospitalizations(81.6%vs 54.9%,P<0.001)and antibiotic treatments(60.5%vs 35.5%,P<0.001),requiring higher doses of vancomycin and prone to recurrent disease(25.0%vs 13.1%,P=0.011).Age over 60 years[odds ratio(OR):2.591,95%confidence interval(CI):1.452-4.624,P=0.001],urban residence(OR:2.330,95%CI:1.286-4.221,P=0.005),previous antibiotic treatments(OR:1.909,95%CI:1.083-3.365,P=0.025),previous hospitalizations(OR:2.509,95%CI:1.263-4.986,P=0.009)and alcohol consumption(OR:2.550,95%CI:1.459-4.459,P=0.001)were risk factors of CDI in *** CDI risk is unrelated to history of SARS-CoV-2 ***,previous COVID-19 may necessitate higher doses of vancomycin for CDI.

AIM To study the morphology of the enteric nervous system and the expression of beta-2 adrenergic(B2A) receptors in primary colorectal *** In this study, we included forty-eight patients with primary colorectal cancer and nine patients for control tissue from the excision of a colonic segment for benign conditions. We determined the clinicopathological features and evaluated the immunohistochemical expression pattern of B2 A receptors as well as the morphological changes of the enteric nervous system(ENS). In order to assess statistical differences, we used the student t-test for comparing the means of two groups and one-way analysis of variance with Bonferroni's post hoc analysis for comparing the means of more than two groups. Correlations were assessed using the Pearson's correlation *** B2 A receptors were significantly associated with tumor grading, tumor size, tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis(P 0.05). We observed, on one hand, a decrease of the relative area for both Auerbach and Meissner plexuses with the increase of the tumor grading, and on the other hand, an increase of the relative area of other nervous elements not in the Meissner plexus or in the Auerbach plexus with the tumor grading. For G1 tumors we found that epithelial B2 A area showed an inverse correlation with the Auerbach plexus areas [r(14) =-0.531, P < 0.05], while for G2 tumors, epithelial B2 A areas showed an indirect variation with both the Auerbach plexus areas [r(14) =-0.453, P < 0.05] and the Meissner areas [r(14) =-0.825, P < 0.01]. For G3 tumors, the inverse dependence increased for both Auerbach [r(14) =-0.587, P < 0.05] and Meissner [r(14) =-0.934, P < 0.05] *** B2 A receptors play an important role in colorectal carcinogenesis and can be utilized as prognostic factors. Since its introduction into clinical practice 15 years ago,capsule endoscopy(CE)has become the first-line investigation procedure in some small bowel pathologies,and more recently,dedicated esophageal and colon CE have expanded the fields of application to include the upper and lower gastrointestinal *** this time,CE has become increasingly popular among gastroenterologists,with more than 2 million capsule examinations performed worldwide,and nearly 3000Pub Med-listed studies on its different aspects *** huge interest in CE may be explained by its noninvasive nature,patient comfort,safety,and access to anatomical regions unattainable via conventional ***,CE has several limitations which impede its wider clinical applications,including the lack of therapeutic capabilities,inability to obtain biopsies and control its *** research groups are currently working to overcome these limitations,while novel devices able to control capsule movement,obtain high quality images,insufflate the gut lumen,perform chromoendoscopy,biopsy of suspect lesions,or even deliver targeted drugs directly to specific sites are under *** current limitations,especially as some of them have already been successfully surmounted,and based on the tremendous progress in technology,it is expected that,by the end of next 15years,CE able to perform both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures will remain the major form of digestive *** review summarizes the literature that prognosticates about the future developments of CE.

A Preliminary Study of Three Finishing Materials for Traditional Chinese Furniture

The traditional Chinese furniture evolved as an important part of the Chinese culture and civilization. Alongside design, structure, ornaments, the original finishes applied define the particularities and value of traditional Chinese furniture. This is because wood finishing not only enhances wood natural beauty by colour, gloss and highlighting of wooden texture, but also can be a means of exquisite decoration (e.g. engraved, gilded or painted lacquer works). Chinese lacquer, Tung oil and Chinese wax represent some of the most important finishing materials employed and were, therefore, selected for this study. The paper presents a brief macroscopic, microscopic and FTIR characterization of these materials. These results will be used as starting data in a further study on the ageing properties of these traditional finishing materials, useful for scientific conservation purposes.

Surgical Management of Fracture Neck of Femur in a Medically Unfit ASA3/4 Patient Selection Using Direct Infiltration Local Anaesthesia

Patients who suffer a Fractured Neck of Femur (NOF) have a high mortality and morbidity rate with up to 20% needing long term care post fracture and a further 30% not returning to their pre fracture functioning. Hip fracture accounts for 87% of total fragility fractures. We describe an anaesthetic technique of fixation of fracture of the femoral neck under direct infiltration local anaesthesia;that can be performed on the sick elderly patient. Twenty-eight NOF fractures were included in this series (24 DHS, 4 Hemiarthroplasty);twenty-three procedures were completed (82.14%);no patient required conversion to another form of anaesthesia either general or spinal;five patients required some degree of light sedation due to agitation (17.8%). This method presents itself as an option in managing patient with high comorbidities which can also be implemented in impoverished areas with limited access to operating surgical facilities.

The slippery slope framework explains tax compliance along two main dimensions,trust in authorities and power of authorities,which influence taxpayers’compliance *** frequentist and Bayesian analyses,we investigated the framework’s assumptions on a sample of 2786 self-employed taxpayers from eleven post-communist and non-post-communist countries doing business in five economic *** using scenarios that experimentally manipulated trust and power,our results confirmed the framework’s assumptions regarding the attitudes of the self-employed taxpayers;trust and power fostered intended tax compliance and diminished tax evasion,trust boosted voluntary tax compliance,whereas power increased enforced tax ***,self-employed taxpayers from post-communist countries reported higher intended tax compliance and lower tax evasion than those from non-post-communist *** results offer tax authorities insights into how trust and power may contribute to obtaining and maintaining high tax compliance levels amid global economic challenges,downturns,and increasing tax compliance costs.

Improving extraction of watermarks in color attacked watermarked images

A new approach for modeling color attacks of RGB-color watermarked images is presented in this paper. We have used a based interpolation watermarking algorithm and supposed that the attacks are simulated by a scaling of the colors followed by a translation. Then give bounds for the extracted watermark depending on the original image, the watermark and the attack. Different attacks like LSB, embedding another watermark, Stirmark have been simulated and the quality of the extracted watermark is discussed in each case.
