On the winter enhancement of adaptive humoral immunity: hypothesis testing in desert hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii: Cricetidae, Rodentia) kept under long-day and short-day photoperiod

We tested the winter immunity enhancement hypothesis(WIEH)on male desert hamsters(Phodopus roborovskii)kept under long-day(LD)and short-day(SD)*** assumed that under SD in a laboratory,the adaptive humoral immune responsiveness to the antigenic challenge would be enhanced due to the lack of winter physical stressors and food shortages and/or because of the action of an endogenous winter bolstering mechanism,while under LD the immune responsiveness would be suppressed by the activity of the reproductive *** results support the WIEH in *** did not find a difference in antibody production in response to sheep erythrocytes between SD and LD hamsters,but SD males had the lower number of granulocytes and the higher number of lymphocytes in white blood cell *** activity was lower in SD *** males demonstrated an increase in their mass-specific resting metabolic rate,their mass-specific maximal metabolic rate and their level of *** result of a generalized linear model analysis indicates the negative effect on secondary immunoresponsiveness to sheep erythrocytes of mid-ventral gland size,the organ characterizing individual reproductive quality,and designates a tradeoff between antibody production and reproductive *** mass-independent maximal metabolic rate also negatively affected antibody production,indicating a tradeoff between maximal aerobic performance and the adaptive immune *** higher stress in SD males seems to be the most likely reason for the lack of the effect of daylight duration on antibody production.

Females choose gentle, but not healthy or macho males in Campbell dwarf hamsters （Phodopus campbelli Thomas 1905）

Androgen-dependent male sexual traits （STs） as well as immunocompetence are theoreticallyassumed to be key indicators of a male＇s quality for the mate-choosing female. We studied matechoice by sexually motivated （Sm） females of Campbell＇s dwarf hamsters. Females chose between2 tethered male siblings that differed in expression of STs. males were unrelated to the female andable to contact and copulate with her. In both males, we measured sex-related morphology ofbody mass, mid-ventral specific skin gland, ano-genital distance, and external testicular *** also estimated levels of blood testosterone and cortisol, specific T- and B-cell immune re-sponses to antigens, as well as aggressive and sexual dominance in sibling males through add-itional encounter experiments with another Sm female （male sibs could freely compete for thefemale）. We found that Sm females chose a partner among 2 male sibs and spent over 80% of theirtime on average with the preferred male compared with the non-preferred one. Her choice was notassociated with the first visit of the chosen male, with a higher expression of sex-related traits,higher levels of blood testosterone, or with aggressive dominance. The choice was not associatedwith the intensity of T-cell immune response to phitohemagglutinin （PHA）. Instead there was a ten-dency for a negative relationship with the expression of STs and B-cell response to the antigenchallenge. The only character that unambiguously influenced female choice was the non-aggressive male to female grooming during sexual contact. There was no difference in breedingsuccess between preferred and non-preferred males paired with virgin females.

Effects of short photoperiod on energy intake,thermogenesis,and reproduction in desert hamsters(Phodopus roborovskii)

Desert hamsters(Phodopus roborovskii)are the least known species in the genus Phodopus with respect to ecology and physiology,and deserve scientific attention,particularly because of their small body ***,the responses of energy metabolism and reproductive function to short photoperiods in desert hamsters were *** and female desert hamsters were acclimated to either long day(LD)(L:D 16:8 h)or short day(SD)photoperiods(L:D 8:16 h)for three months,and then the females were transferred back to an LD photoperiod for a further five months,while at the end of the SD acclimation the males were killed and measurements were taken for serum leptin as well as molecular markers for *** found that like the other two species from the genus Phodopus,the desert hamsters under SD decreased body mass,increased adaptive thermogenesis as indicated by elevated mitochondrial protein content and uncoupling protein-1 content in brown adipose tissue,and suppressed reproduction compared to those under ***,different from the other two species,desert hamsters did not show any differences in energy intake or serum leptin concentration between LD and *** data suggest that different species from the same genus respond in different ways to the environmental signals,and the desert adapted species are not as sensitive to change in photoperiod as the other two species.

Balanced Truncation Based on Generalized multiscale Finite Element method for the Parameter-Dependent Elliptic Problem

In this paper,we combine the generalized multiscale finite element method(GmsFEm)with the balanced truncation(BT)method to address a parameterdependent elliptic ***,in progress of a model reduction we try to obtain accurate solutions with less computational *** is realized via a spectral decomposition from the dominant eigenvalues,that is used for an enrichment of multiscale basis functions in the *** multiscale bases computations are localized to specified coarse neighborhoods,and follow an offline-online process in which eigenvalue problems are used to capture the underlying system *** the BT on reduced scales,we present a local-global strategy where it requires the observability and controllability of solutions to a set of Lyapunov *** the Lyapunov equations need expensive computations,the efficiency of our combined approach is shown to be readily flexible with respect to the online space and an reduced *** experiments are provided to validate the robustness of our approach for the parameter-dependent elliptic model.

The determination of white dwarf parameters in dwarf novae by optical spectral modeling

This paper presents the results of a model analysis of optical spectra and determination of the parameters of three individual SU Uma and WZ Sge type dwarf *** moderate resolution spectra of TY Psc,FL Psc and V455 And were obtained at the 6-m BTA of the SAO RAS in the low state of these systems with the determination of white dwarf *** theoretical spectra were calculated using the grid models of hydrogen dwarf atmospheres of white dwarfs by varying the parameters(T_(eff) and log g) to reach the best agreement with the observed *** highlight different effects of the parameters on the shape and intensity of the HI ***,it is possible to unambiguously determine T_(eff) and log g from the analysis of *** fundamental parameters of white dwarfs(m and R) were found by comparing the parameters of atmospheres with theoretical models of the internal *** obtained parameters of the primaries of TY Psc,FL Psc and V455 And are consistent with the average values for SU Uma and WZ Sge *** a result,we demonstrate the efficiency of the method for determining the parameters of such systems based on the analysis of a limited set of observed optical spectra.

Numerical modeling of zero-offset laboratory data in a strong topographic environment: results for a spectral-element method and a discretized Kirchhoff integral method

Abstract Accurate simulation of seismic wave propaga- tion in complex geological structures is of particular interest nowadays. However conventional methods may fail to simulate realistic wavefields in environments with great and rapid structural changes, due for instance to the presence of shadow zones, diffractions and/or edge effects. Different methods, developed to improve seismic model- ing, are typically tested on synthetic configurations against analytical solutions for simple canonical problems or ref- erence methods, or via direct comparison with real data acquired in situ. Such approaches have limitations,especially if the propagation occurs in a complex envi- ronment with strong-contrast reflectors and surface irreg- ularities, as it can be difficult to determine the method which gives the best approximation of the ＂real＂ solution, or to interpret the results obtained without an a priori knowledge of the geologic environment. An alternative approach for seismics consists in comparing the synthetic data with high-quality data collected in laboratory experi- ments under controlled conditions for a known configuration. In contrast with numerical experiments, laboratory data possess many of the characteristics of field data, as real waves propagate through models with no numerical approximations. We thus present a comparison of laboratory-scaled measurements of 3D zero-offset wave reflection of broadband pulses from a strong topographic environment immersed in a water tank with numerical data simulated by means of a spectral-element method and a discretized Kirchhoff integral method. The results indicate a good quantitative fit in terms of time arrivals and acceptable fit in amplitudes for all datasets.

Photodynamic therapy(PDT)is one of the most appealing photonic modalities for cancer treatment based on anticancer activity of light-induced photosensitizer-mediated reactive oxygen species(ROS),but a limited depth of light penetration into tissues does not make possible the treatment of deep-seated neoplasms and thus complicates its widespread clinical ***,we introduce the concept of genetically encoded bioluminescence resonance energy transfer(BRET)-activated PDT,which combines an internal light source and a photosensitizer(PS)in a single-genetic construct,which can be delivered to tumors seated at virtually unlimited depth and then triggered by the injection of a substrate to initiate their *** illustrate the concept,we engineered genetic NanoLuc-miniSOG BRET pair,combining NanoLuc luciferase flashlight and phototoxic flavoprotein miniSOG,which generates ROS under luciferase-substrate *** prove the concept feasibility in mice bearing NanoLuc-miniSOG expressing tumor,followed by its elimination under the luciferase-substrate ***,we demonstrate a targeted delivery of NanoLuc-miniSOG gene,via tumor-specific lentiviral particles,into a tumor,followed by its successful elimination,with tumor-growth inhibition(TGI)coefficient exceeding 67%,which confirms a great therapeutic potential of the proposed *** conclusion,this study provides proof-of-concept for deep-tissue“photodynamic”therapy without external light source that can be considered as an alternative for traditional PDT.
