Evaluation of fire smoke control in underground space

The main goal of the fire management strategy is to avoid people interaction with fire hazards,therefore several studies are carried out for optimal escape route planning as well as smoke management and mechanical ventilation *** spaces are a special case of study due to their technical characteristics that create different fire spread conditions compared to conventional *** this paper,a comparative study on the fire smoke propagation is carried out taking into account the use and performance of smoke mitiga-tion *** Underground Hazardous Waste Management Repository of Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park in Greece,is selected as a case study to achieve the paper objectives.A Computer Fluid Dynamic software is used to simulate various fire scenarios based on the specific characteristics of the underground *** that have significant impact on evacuation procedure and human health such as visibility and carbon monoxide concentration are ***,the results are presented and an evaluation method is proposed based on evacuation simulation results,in order to predict the impact of the smoke control design on the conditions inside the underground *** results reveal that the ventilation shaft(passive system)offers an effective smoke control without any other combined control system and that the installation of smoke curtains,which are activated on time,offers significant improvement on smoke spread control extending the available egress time(ASET)in case of fire.

Accurate medical diagnosis,which involves identifying diseases based on patient symptoms,is often hindered by uncertainties in data interpretation and *** fuzzy set theories have emerged as effective tools to address these *** this paper,new mathematical approaches for handling uncertainty in medical diagnosis are introduced using q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets(q-ROFS)and interval-valued q-rung orthopair fuzzy sets(IVq-ROFS).Three aggregation operators are proposed in our methodologies:the q-ROF weighted averaging(q-ROFWA),the q-ROF weighted geometric(q-ROFWG),and the q-ROF weighted neutrality averaging(qROFWNA),which enhance decision-making under *** operators are paired with ranking methods such as the similarity measure,score function,and inverse score function to improve the accuracy of disease ***,the impact of varying q-rung values is explored through a sensitivity analysis,extending the analysis beyond the typical maximum value of *** Basic Uncertain Information(BUI)method is employed to simulate expert opinions,and aggregation operators are used to combine these opinions in a group decisionmaking *** results provide a comprehensive comparison of methodologies,highlighting their strengths and limitations in diagnosing diseases based on uncertain patient data.

Upper oesophageal images and Z-line detection with 2 different small-bowel capsule systems

Transmission of oesophageal images may vary between different small-bowel capsule endoscopy models. A retrospective review of 100 examinations performed with 2 different Small-bowel capsule endoscopy （SBCE） sys- tems （PillCam and MiroCam） was performed. The oral cavity/aero-digestive tract （i.e., tongue, uvula and/or epiglottis） was captured/identified in almost all （99%） of PillCam videos but in none of MiroCam cases, P 〈 0.0001. Furthermore, oesophageal images （i.e., from the upper oesophageal sphincter to the Z-line were cap- tured in 99% of PillCam videos （mean =1= SD, 60.5 ± 334.1 frames, range： 0-3329 frames） and in 66% of Mi- roCam cases （mean ± SD, 11.1 ± 46.5 frames, range： 0-382 frames）, P 〈 0.0001. The Z-line was identified in 42% of PilICam videos and 17% of MiroCam, P = 0.0002. This information might be useful when perform- ing SBCE in patients with high risks for aspiration.

Diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis: An update on leucocyte esterase reagent strips

Ascites remain the commonest complication of decompensated cirrhosis. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is defined as the infection of ascitic fluid (AF) in the absence of a contiguous source of infection and/or an intraabdominal inflammatory focus. An AF polymorphonuclear (PMN) leucocyte count ≥ 250/mm 3 -irrespective of the AF culture resultis universally accepted nowadays as the best surrogate marker for diagnosing SBP. Frequently the results of the manual or automated PMN count do not reach the hands of the responsible medical personnel in a timely manner. However, this is a crucial step in SBP management. Since 2000, 26 studies (most of them published as full papers) have checked the validity of using leukocyte esterase reagent strips (LERS) in SBP diagnosis. LERS appear to have low sensitivity for SBP, some LERS types more than others. On the other hand, though, LERS have consistently given a high negative predictive value (> 95% in the majority of the studies) and this supports the use of LERS as a preliminary screening tool for SBP diagnosis. Finally, an AF-tailored dipstick has been developed. Within the proper setting, it is set to become the mainstream process for handling AF samples.

Impact of earthquake-induced bridge damage and time evolving traffic demand on the road network resilience

Damage from recent earthquakes has shown that substandard bridges are particularly vulnerable to strong ground motions being the weakest components of a road *** and foundation damages in bridges lead to a significant loss related to both repair process and a prolonged traffic disruption, which in turn results in large indirect loss in the affected area. Along these lines, the estimation of the overall loss related to earthquake-induced damage in highway bridges and overpasses must be based on a wider network analysis rather than on a single structural assessment. Key concept in such a comprehensive loss estimation procedure is the network resilience, expressing the extent of both direct and indirect loss, as well as the system's ability to quickly recover its preearthquake state. In this paper, a recently developed framework for assessing the loss and resilience associated with seismic impact on the structural and geotechnical components of a road network, as well as the relevant software developed are extended to further consider the implications of post-earthquake traffic demand variation. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is conducted for a case study network to investigate the impact of traffic demand variation after a major earthquake event and the subsequent trip cancelations on the time-variant, cumulative cost at a network level. The results clearly highlight that not only the seismic resilience of a highway network should be assessed in a holistic manner coupling seismic hazard, structural and traffic analysis, but the latter shall include realistic scenarios with respect to the potential variation of origin-destination demand after the earthquake and during the recovery period.

Distinct colonoscopy findings of microscopic colitis:Not so microscopic after all?

Microscopic colitis(MC) is considered an "umbrella term",comprising two subtypes,i.e.,collagenous colitis(CC) and lymphocytic colitis(LC).They are classically associated with normal or unremarkable *** the last few years,reports have been published revealing findings that are thought to be characteristic or pathognomonic of MC,especially CC.A systematic electronic and manual search of PubMed and EMBASE(to December 2010),for publications on distinct endoscopic findings in MC,resulted in 42 relevant reports for inclusion in this *** eight patients with collagenous colitis were *** one publication describing a distinct endoscopic pattern in LC was *** findings in CC are alteration of the vascular mucosal pattern,mucosal nodularity,a sequence of change from mucosal defects to mucosal cicatricial lesions,and perhaps(although of doubtful relevance) mucosal pseudomembranes.A causal connection of mucosal defects with the use of lansoprazole seems to *** of the proposed lesion description herein is recommended in order to improve homogeneity of future reports.

Malware-Propagative Mobile Ad Hoc Networks:Asymptotic Behavior Analysis

In this paper, the spreading of malicious software over ad hoc networks, where legitimate nodes are prone to propagate the infections they receive from either an attacker or their already infected neighbors, is analyzed. Considering the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible （SIS） node infection paradigm we propose a probabilistic model, on the basis of the theory of closed queuing networks, that aims at describing the aggregated behavior of the system when attacked by malicious nodes. Because of its nature, the model is also able to deal more effectively with the stochastic behavior of attackers and the inherent probabilistic nature of the wireless environment. The proposed model is able to describe accurately the asymptotic behavior of malware-propagative large scale ad hoc networking environments. Using the Norton equivalent of the closed queuing network, we obtain analytical results for its steady state behavior, which in turn is used for identifying the critical parameters affecting the operation of the network. Finally, through modeling and simulation, some additional numerical results are obtained with respect to the behavior of the system when multiple attackers are present, and regarding the time-dependent evolution and impact of an attack.

Comparison of blood rheological models in patient specific cardiovascular system simulations

Newtonian, Quemada and Casson blood viscosity models are implemented in order to simulate the rheological behavior of blood under pulsating flow conditions in a patient specific iliac bifurcation. The influence of the applied blood constitutive equations is monitored via the wall shear stress （WSS） distribution, magnitude and oscillations, non-Newtonian importance factors, and viscosity values according to the shear rate. The distribution of WSS on the vascular wall follows a pattern which is independent of the theological model chosen. On the other hand, the WSS magnitude and oscillations are directly related to the blood constitutive equations applied and the shear rate. It is concluded that the Newtonian approximation is satisfactory only in high shear and flow rates. Moreover, the Newtonian model seems to overestimate the possibility for the formation of atherosclerotic lesions or aneurysms at sites of the vascular wall where the WSS are oscillating.
