In estimating emissions reductions brought about by renewables in China, much of existing research assumes that renewables displace coal power. In this paper, this assumption is challenged and the potential environmental effects of photovoltaic （PV） power in North-west China are reevaluated when the marginal generator actually being displaced is taken into account. The annual PV power generation in the North-west Grid is estimated, in this paper, to be as high as 17900GW.h in 2015, roughly equaling to the output of 1.5 nuclear power plants in the US today. The total associated emission reduction in 2015 will at most be 0.36 percent of SO2 and 0.25 percent of NOx emissions from their 2010 levels in China. Further, PV power may render no emissions reduction at all if it displaces hydropower, which is often used to meet peak demand in the North-west Grid in China. These results imply that a more cost-effective area of focus in the short- term may be on desulfurization and denitrification technologies for coal plants.

The paper presents the experimental research findings for the patterns of collisions of water droplets with pressed tableted samples used as substrates and with small particles of a pyrolyzing solid *** coal samples were ***-substrate interactions were studied when varying the droplet diameter in the range from 1 to 4 mm and velocity from 0.5 to 4 m/*** corresponded to the Weber number range of *** coal tablet surface temperature was varied from 20 to 700℃.In the interactions of water droplets(0.7-1.5 mm in diameter,pre-collision velocity from 1 to 3 m/s)with coal particles(with a size of 0.2-1 mm,pre-collision velocity 0.7-2 m/s),the temperature of the latter was varied in the range of 330-480℃.The following regimes of the interaction of droplets with solid particles during chemical reactions and phase transformations were distinguished:spreading/agglomeration and break-up/*** in the characteristics of the interaction of water droplets with coal particles at varying temperatures were ***-particle interaction regime maps for B(We),We(Oh)and We(Ca)were *** collision regime boundaries were described using fitted curves that can be utilized to develop the existing mathematical models of droplet-particle collisions in *** was established that the gaseous volatile production in coal pyrolysis has a modest effect on the regimes and characteristics of the droplet destruction in the temperature range under consideration(20-700℃).

All non-immortalized mesenchymal stem cells have a limited proliferative potential,that is,replicative senescence(RS)is an integral characteristic of the life of all mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs).It is known that one of the important signs of RS is a decrease of cell motility,and that violations of migration processes contribute to the deterioration of tissue ***,the characterization of the properties of the cell line associated with RS is a prerequisite for the effective use of MSCs in restorative *** of the key proteins regulating cell motility is the small GTPase *** main purpose of this work was to study the nuclear-cytoplasmic redistribution of the RhoA protein during RS in MSC lines recently obtained and characterized in our *** study found that a comparative analysis of the intracellular localization of RhoA in three cell lines(MSCWJ-1,FetMSC,DF2)showed a decrease in the nuclear localization of RhoA during RS.

A design of a new heterogeneous code for LBM simulations is *** heterogeneous computing wemean a collaborative computation on CPU and GPU,which is characterized by the following features:the data is distributed between CPU and GPU memory spaces taking advantage of both parallel hierarchies;the capabilities of both SIMT GPU and SIMD GPU parallelization are used for calculations;the algorithms in use efficiently conceal the CPU-GPU data exchange;the subdivision of the computing task is performed with an account for the strong points of both processing units:high performance of GPU,low latency,and advanced memory hierarchy of *** code is a continuation of our work in the development of LRnLA codes for *** LRnLA codes had good efficiency both for CPU and GPU computing,and allowed GPU simulation performed on data stored in CPU RAM without performance loss on CPU-GPU data *** the new code,we use methods and instruments that can be flexibly adapted to GPU and CPU instruction *** present the theoretical study of the performance of the proposed code and suggest implementation *** bottlenecks are *** a result,we conclude that larger problems can be simulated with higher efficiency in the heterogeneous system.

Mammal diversity during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition in Eastern Europe

Fossil record data on the mammal diversity and species richness are of importance for the reconstruction of the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene *** Eastern Europe,the transformations during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition consisted mainly in changes in zonal structure and local fauna composition(Markova&Kolfschoten 2008).We investigated the species richness and the analogues of theα,βdiversity indexes(in the sense of Whittaker 1972)of large and medium size mammals for 13 climate-stratigraphic units dating to the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene,from the Hasselo Stadial(44-39 kBP)to the Subatlantic period and the present *** biological diversity of the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM)and the Holocene thermal optimum was investigated in more detail using information about all mammalian taxa(PALEOFAUNA database;Markova 1995).One of our results show that theα,βdiversity values show only a negative correlation with the temperature conditions during the Late Pleistocene,the period that is characterized by the so-called‘Mammoth Fauna’*** the Holocene faunas the diversity indexes are nearly independent from physical conditions;theαdiversity index decreased and theβdiversity index *** relatively lowαdiversity and highβdiversity indexes for the present-day faunas are referred to the decrease of the population number of some forest species in historical time and the increase of the dominance of unspecialized species or the species connected with intra-zonal *** study shows furthermore the occurrence of several East European‘centers’with a high mammal diversity,which are relatively stable during the Pleistocene-Holocene *** orientation of the boundaries between the large geographical mammal assemblages depended,particularly in the northwestern part of Eastern Europe,on the expansion of the Scandinavian ice sheet.

A comprehensive study is presented for empirical seismic vulnerability assessment of typical structural types, representative of the building stock of Southern Europe, based on a large set of damage statistics. The observational database was obtained from post-earthquake surveys carried out in the area struck by the September 7, 1999 Athens earthquake. After analysis of the collected observational data, a unified damage database has been created which comprises 180,945 damaged buildings from/after the near-field area of the earthquake. The damaged buildings are classified in specific structural types, according to the materials, seismic codes and construction techniques in Southern Europe. The seismic demand is described in terms of both the regional macroseismic intensity and the ratio αg/ao, where αg is the maximum peak ground acceleration （PGA） of the earthquake event and ao is the unique value PGA that characterizes each municipality shown on the Greek hazard map. The relative and cumulative frequencies of the different damage states for each structural type and each intensity level are computed in terms of damage ratio. Damage probability matrices （DPMs） and vulnerability curves are obtained for specific structural types. A comparison analysis is fulfilled between the produced and the existing vulnerability models.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. NAFLD is considerably more frequent in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than in the general population and is also more severe histologically in this group. Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, the newest class of antidiabetic agents, appear to represent a promising option for the management of NAFLD in patients with T2DM. In a number of studies, treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors resulted in a reduction in hepatic steatosis and in transaminase levels. However, existing studies are small, their follow-up period was short and none evaluated the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on liver histology. Accordingly, larger studies are needed to verify these preliminary results and define the role of SGLT2 inhibitors in the treatment of NAFLD in patients with T2DM.

Objective: The relationship between cause-specific mortality and regional socio-economic and environmental indicators remains poorly studied in Russia. The study first aims to study regional differences in cause-specific mortality among the population aged 20 years and older in Russia, and second to investigate the association between regional deprivation and cause-specific mortality. Material and methods: Russian deprivation index was used to measure level of deprivation. The index consists of three components: social, economic and environmental. The index measures general deprivation, and its components measure social, economic and environmental deprivation. The mortality data by age (five-year groups) and sex in the subjects of Russia from 2006 to 2022 were extracted from the Russian Fertility and Mortality Database of the Center of Demographic Research of the New Economic School. Results: In the most general deprived areas, mortality rate from infectious and parasitic diseases increased by more than twice in the total population, women and men as compared to the least deprived quantile (Q1). Fully adjusted negative binomial regression showed an increase in mortality rate from injuries, poisoning and external causes and infectious and parasitic diseases in more social deprived areas as compared to Q1 in the total population, women and men. In men, there was a significantly higher mortality rate from neoplasms and from infectious and parasitic diseases in more economic deprived areas as compared to Q1. Both in total population and in women, there was a trend towards an increase in mortality from neoplasms depending on the level of environmental deprivation. Conclusions: This is the first study examining the relationship of contextual factors with cause-specific mortality that takes into account sex, age and year of death at the population level in Russia. General, social, economic and environmental deprivation are associated with cause-specific mortality. © 2024
