The global financial crisis at the turn of the decade has generated regional divergences with long-term global implications,symbolised by the fast-tracked establishment of the G20(cooper & Subacchi 2010).But is this an association of regional powers by contrast to the G3 of emerging states?This paper suggests that,in terms of prospects for both North,including a diminished Anglo-American centre & an EU of the PIIGS,and the‘global South ’,we need to distinguish between‘emerging powers’(Shaw,cooper & Chin 2009),‘emerging societies’ (Pieterse & Rehbein 2009) &‘emerging economies’or companies(Goldstein 2007);ie varieties of capitalisms(Bruff 2008)& of civil societies which impact national & regional *** the BRICs become alternative centres of attraction,other regions like Africa & the Caribbean

Validation of Treatment Planning Dose Calculations: Experience working with medical Physics Practice Guideline 5.a.

Recently published medical Physics Practice Guideline 5.a. (mPPG 5.a.) by American Association of Physicists in medicine (AAPm) sets the minimum requirements for treatment planning system (TPS) dose algorithm commissioning and quality assurance (QA). The guideline recommends some validation tests and tolerances based primarily on published AAPm task group reports and the criteria used by IROC Houston. we performed the commissioning and validation of the dose algorithms for both megavoltage photon and electron beams on three linacs following mPPG 5.a. we designed the validation experiments in an attempt to highlight the evaluation method and tolerance criteria recommended by the guideline. It seems that comparison of dose profiles using in-water scan is an effective technique for basic photon and electron validation. ImRT/VmAT dose calculation is recommended to be tested with some TG-119 and clinical cases, but no consensus of the tolerance exists. Extensive validation tests have provided the better understanding of the accuracy and limitation of a specific dose calculation algorithm. we believe that some tests and evaluation criteria given in the guideline can be further refined.

Potential Groundwater Pollution Risks by Heavy metals from Agricultural Soil in Songon Area(Abidjan,Cote d’Ivoire)

The soil samples were collected taking into account the land use in Songon area. The hydraulic conductivity (K) of soils was characterized in-situ when specific yield (Sy), pHw and concentrations of cooper, Iron, Zinc, Cadmium, Chromium and Lead were measured in the laboratory. Pollution load indices (PLI) were calculated to evaluate the soil contamination levels. The soils were neutral and alkaline (6.7≤ pH ≤ 9.20), permeable (1.9 í 10-5?m·s-1?≤ K ≤ 8.2 í 10-4?m·s-1), with a high specific yield (13.33% ≤ Sy ≤ 33.33%) which can favor the pollutants transfer. The heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb) have very high concentrations in soils. The integrated pollution indices (PLI) indicate that almost 70% of Songon soils are moderately contaminated by the investigated heavy metals, with windows presenting high indices of pollution related to the intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides. The establishment of new boreholes in the Songon area should consider these heavy metals, so as to avoid the risk of groundwater pollution due to the physical properties of soils.

Objective: To evaluate concurrent and predictive validity for low-contrast le tter acuity (L-CLA) testing as a candidate visual component for the multiple Sc lerosis Functional Composite (mSFC). methods: L-CLA testing was conducted in tw o mS patient cohorts. In the mSFC Validation Study, 137 participants from a Phas e III trial of inteferon beta-1a (Avonex) for relapsing-remitting mS were foll owed. A second cohort included 65 patients with secondary progressive mS who par ticipated in a substudy of the International mS Secondary Progressive Avonex Con trolled Trial (ImPACT). The total number of letters read correctly at four contr ast levels (100, 5, 1.25, and 0.6%)was correlated with Expanded Disability Stat us Scale (EDSS), mSFC, Sickness Impact Profile, multiple Sclerosis Quality of Li fe Inventory, and brain parenchymal fraction (BPF), as determined by mRI. Result s: Low-and high-contrast letter acuity scores correlated with BPF at follow-u p in the mSFC Validation Study (5%: r=0.40, p with EDSS (5%: r=-0.35, p mSFC(5%: r=0.47, p mPACT Substudy, change in L-CLA scores from baseline to year 1 predicted sub sequent change in the EDSS from year 1 to 2 at the 5%(p=0.0142) and the 1.25%( p=0.0038) contrast levels, after adjusting for change in mSFC scores from baseli ne to year 1. Conclusions: Low-contrast letter acuity (L-CLA) scores demonstra te concurrent and predictive validity in patients with relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (mS). L-CLA testing provides additiona l information relevant to the mS disease process that is not entirely captured b y the multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite.
