Background: Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that causes bone resorption of bone supporting teeth and leads to change in the normal architecture of the alveolar process. There are instances where the technique sensitive nature of restorative procedures or the faulty restorative margins may inadvertently lead to conditions which could bring about periodontal disease/ destruction. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the impact of dental restorations type on marginal bone among some patients being treated for chronic periodontitis. Material and Methods: Three hundred patients from the periodontics clinics in college of dentistry, King Khalid university were participated in our study. A total of 292 patients completed the study, 152 males and 140 female. They were divided according to dental reconstructions into three groups: Group I was without dental reconstructions (control group), group II patients received amalgam class II fillings and group III received fixed bridge denture. Plaque index (PLI) gingival index (GI), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and marginal bone loss (MBL) were recorded. All data were collected and were analyzed by ANOVA test. Results: In the present study, the restored teeth revealed significantly higher mean values for PLI, GI, CAL and MBL than the non-restored teeth (p-value Conclusion: Although the limitations of the present study, the patients in group II had the highest clinical attachment loss and value of marginal bone loss which can explain the more extension of amalgam fillings into subgingival direction, leading to increased plaque accumulation and increased periodontal destruction.

Flavonoids are natural polyphenolic compounds produced by many aquatic plants and released in their environments. In this study, the effects of several aquatic flavonoids on cyanobacterial Microcystis aeruginosa, especially in relation to the cell growth, photosynthetic activity, cell morphology, and cell membrane integr ity, were investigated. Significant grow th inhibition was observed when the cyanobacteria were exposed to three flavonoids, namely, 5,4’-dihydroxyflavone(DHF), apigenin, and luteolin. Luteolin reduced the effective quantum yield, photosynthetic efficiency, and maximal electron transport rate by 70%, 59% and 44%, respectively, whereas 5,4’-DHF and apigenin slightly affected these parameters, which implies that luteolin disrupts the photosynthetic system. Moreover, 5,4’-DHF and apigenin compromised the membrane integr ity, and induced membrane depolarization in 52% and 38%, and permeabilization in 30% and 44% of the cells, respectively. The 5,4’-DHF and apigenin showed more pronounced effects on M. aeruginosa morphology and membrane integr ity, compared to the luteolin. These results suggest that flavonoids could have significant effects on growth and physiological functions in cyanobacterial species.

Background: Cervical cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer among women in the developing countries. It is preventable by early detection and treatment of the precursor lesions. Cervical cytology became the standard screening test for cervical cancer and premalignant lesions with the introduction of the Papanicolau (Pap) smear. Aim: to determine the uptake, indications and results of cervical cytology in a tertiary health center in Nigeria. Materials and Methods: a 5-year descriptive study of the results of cervical cytology among women who attended the gynaecological outpatient clinic of the Hospital. Results: a total of 597 cases of cervical Pap smears were received at the histopathology department during the study period out of which 20 (3.4%) were inadequate for cytological evaluation. The patients age ranged from 15 to 80 (mean 38.8 SD = 11.4) years. The average annual uptake of the Cervical smear was 9.3% of the total number of patients seen in the gynaecological clinic during the study period and the main indications were routine medical check-up, 256 (42.9%) and cervicitis 76 (12.7%). About 398 (66.7%) were normal smears while 152 (26.3%) were abnormal. Non-specific inflammatory changes were present in 113 (74.3%) cases. Cytology was positive for intraepithelial lesions in 6.8% (39/577) cases. Eighteen percent (7/39) of them were high-grade lesions while squamous cell carcinoma was detected in 12.8% (5/39) cases. Conclusion: the uptake of cervical cytology of 8.7% is low and the main indication was routine check up. Premalignant lesions were detected in 6.8% of cases.

Abnormal levels of plasma lipid have been linked to atherosclerosis, strokes and heart conditions. Variations in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels are considered as risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). Furthermore, triglycerides are a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, measurement of plasma lipid levels is an important mortality predictor. Several factors were associated with irregularity in plasma lipids such as genetic alterations. Recent researches have linked single nucleotides polymorphism (SNP) in ApoA5 gene with these deviations. In this study, we reported the effects of the genetic variant c.553G>T in ApoA5 on the levels of plasma lipids. To explore these effects, a case-control study including 280 male and female subjects (44 of them were assigned as CAD cases while the remaining subjects were categorized as control) was established. All patients in the study were recruited from the western region in KSA. The results have detected minor variations in LDL, HDL and cholesterol levels between CAD patients carrying T allele and CAD patients carrying the WT allele. However, there were no significant effects due to these variations. TG levels in the wild type carriers reached up to 291 mg/dl while T allele carriers, the cases, presented lower levels of TG (170 mg/dl and 71 mg/dl). Although, T allele showed no effects on plasma lipids with the exception of TG levels. We suggest by this study that T allele in this SNP might be considered as a valuable tool in the diagnosis of CAD.

随着人们对与可持续发展相关议题的关注,越来越多的组织被要求报告其可持续发展绩效。与传统的财务报告不同,可持续发展报告多是企业自愿披露,并且可以使用多种准则和框架来指导其披露策略。本文使用一种分类法来分析报告指南常用形式的实质,并探讨这些报告形式结构下理念变化的趋势。我们发现可持续发展报告正在从强调报告的结果转向对公司与可持续性相关的内部运作过程的讨论,这也反映了管理会计对该报告指南日益增强的指导作用。我们也讨论了公司针对过程导向的报告方法而故意"漂绿"(美化)和混淆可持续性表现的潜在问题,以及调整监控方法以减少此类行为的必要性。

Frozen Section in Postmenopausal Women Presented with Suspicious Ovarian Masses, Does It Have a Role?

Background: Frozen section (FS) has a valuable role in the diagnosis of ovarian tumors. It is considered a pivotal point in guiding the surgical therapy, particularly in premenopausal women. In postmenopausal women, it may be required as well to avoid unnecessary surgical staging in benign ovarian tumors. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of intraoperative frozen section in ovarian neoplasms in postmenopausal women. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was done for intraoperative FS for suspected ovarian neoplasms. The study was conducted in Oncology Center, Mansoura University from March 2008 to December 2014. The frozen and paraffin section reports were compared, and overall accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were determined. Results: The study included 105 patients and the overall accuracy of FS in determining malignancy was 81.7%. The sensitivity for malignant tumors was 75.32% with specificity of 100%. For benign tumors, the sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 93%, respectively. Borderline tumors had the lowest sensitivity of 100% with specificity of 95.19%. Conclusion: The present study concurs that frozen section is an accurate test for diagnosis of benign and malignant tumors in postmenopausal women thus determining the extent of surgery done for them. On the other hand, accuracy rates for borderline tumors are low.
