In VitrAntioxygenic Activity of Ridge Gourd (Luffa acutangula) Pulp, Peel and Their Extracts on Peroxidation Models

Ridge gourd pulp and peel powders as well as their various solvent fractions were evaluated for antioxygenic activity using different methods. Ridge gourd pulp and peel powders at 2% level and their ethanol/water soluble extracts exhibited strong antioxygenic activity in sunflower oil stored at 37?C. The water soluble extract devoid of any antioxygenic activity in sunflower oil. Ridge gourd pulp and peel powders as well as their extracts were evaluated for their antioxygenic activity using linoleic acid peroxidation, β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) methods. Ethanol/water extracts from ridge gourd pulp and peel showed highest antioxygenic activity followed by water extracts, while the petroleum ether extract showed moderate antioxygenic activity. Ridge gourd peel powder and its extracts showed slightly higher antioxygenic activity than ridge gourd pulp powder and its extracts. This may be attributed to the presence of higher amounts of phenolics and flavonoids which have been reported as potential antioxidants.

The antioxygenic activity of Solanum nigrum L. leaves and its various solvent extracts were evaluated using sunflower oil model system. Leaf powder and its methanol/water (80:20) soluble fraction showed strong antioxygenic activity in refined sunflower oil. On the other hand, ethyl acetate fraction exhibited marginal antioxygenic activity, whereas the water soluble fraction was practically devoid of any activity in refined sunflower oil. Thermal stability of different extracts of Solanum nigrum L. leaves heated at 80?C in refined sunflower oil also indicated the strong efficacy of methanol/water (80:20) extract to inhibit thermal oxidation. Solanum nigrum L. contain high levels of magnesium (239.0 mg/100g) and phosphorous (80.3 mg/100g). Fatty acid analysis of the lipid extracted from Solanum nigrum L. leaves indicated the presence of linoleic (59.1%) as a major fatty acid. The result of this study confirmed the presence of antioxygenic compounds in leaves, in particular its methanol/water (80:20) extracts showed great potential as a natural antioxidant to inhibit lipid peroxidation in foods.

Development and Quality Evaluation of Choco Quinoa Nutri Bar during Storage

Choco quinoa nutri bar was developed using quinoa as one of the ingredients to explore its nutritional benefits. Bars were packed in polypropylene (PP, 75 μ) and metallised polyester (12 μ) low density—high density (MP, 100 μ) (with/without vacuum) films, stored under ambient and 37°C temperature conditions for shelf life evaluation. Bar contained 14.43% protein, 14.93% fat with a calorific value of 426.75 k cal/100g. Chemical changes were observed significantly (p < 0.05) more in the samples stored at 37°C than the ones stored at ambient conditions (15°C - 34°C). Bars showed maximum stability at 0.33 aw with less chemical changes. Oleic acid (36.06%) was found to be the major fatty acids in the bar followed by palmitic (29.35%), stearic (17.12%) and linoleic (12.05%) acids. Hardness of the bar enhanced significantly during storage, and was observed significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the samples packed in MP films (with/without vacuum) as compared to bars packed in PP films thus restricting the shelf life of the bar to 6 months in MP films (with/without vacuum) and 9 months in PP films at both the temperature conditions.

Colon cancer is currently the third most common cancer and second most fatal cancer in the United States,resulting in approximately 600,000 deaths *** colorectal cancer death rates are decreasing by about 3%every year,disease outcomes could be substantially improved with more research into the drivers of colon carcinogenesis,the determinants of aggressiveness in colorectal cancer and the identification of biomarkers that could enable choice of more optimal *** carcinogenesis is notably a slow process that can take *** factors that contribute to the development of colon cancer are mutational,epigenetic and environmental,and risk factors include age,history of polyps and family history of colon *** cancers exhibit heterogeneity in their features and are often characterized by the presence of chromosomal instability,microscopic satellite instability,or CpG island methylator *** this review,we propose that centrosome amplification may be a widespread occurrence in colorectal cancers and could potently influence tumor ***,the quantitation of this cancer-specific anomaly could offer valuable prognostic information and pave the way for further customization of treatment based on the organellar profile of *** stratification models that take into account centrosomal status could thus potentially reduce adverse side effects and result in improved outcomes for colorectal cancer patients.

Biochemical Composition and Disease Resistance in Newly Synthesized Amphidiploid and Autotetraploid Peanuts

Genetic diversity in peanut (Arachishypogaea L.) is narrow due to its evolution and domestication processes. Amphidiploids and autotetraploids (newly synthesized tetraploids) were created to broaden its genetic base. Molecular analysis has shown that the newly synthesized tetraploids had broader genetic base;and were genetically divergent when compared to cultivated peanut. Nutritional composition relative to oil, fatty acid composition, O/L ratio, protein, iodine value and presence of plant proteinase inhibitors such as trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitors were studied in the synthesized tetraploids. Some of the newly synthesized tetraploids had higher amounts of proteinase inhibitors. Evaluation of newly synthesized tetraploids revealed several lines resistant to late leaf spot (LLS) and peanut bud necrosis disease (PBND).
