In this paper a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Strain Rosette is designed, developed and tested. Traditional FBGs measure strain in only one direction. However, in-plane strain at a point consists of two normal strains and one shear strain. Hence a FBG strain rosette needs to be designed. The sensing principle of FBGs as a strain and temperature sensor and fundamental principles of strain transformation and strain gage rosettes are *** strain rosettes are fabricated and embedded in two materials namely, Silicon Gel RTV 146-9 and Glass Fiber Composite Laminates. Experiments were conducted on the FBG strain rosette structures that were embedded in Silicon Gel (RTV 146-9). Initial findings from the experiments as well as preferred embedding material are presented.

The term "photomechanics" describes a suite of experimental techniques which use optics (photo) for studying problems in mechanics. The field has been in existence for some time, but has always lagged behind other experimental and numerical techniques. The main reason for this is that the interpretation of data, which whilst providing whole-field visualization, is not in a form readily amenable to the end-user. Digital image processing has become common within the photomechanics community. However, one approach does not fit all, and subtle variations in technique and method have been developed by different groups working on specific applications. This primer enables the user to get started with their experimental analysis quickly. It is based on the universally popular MATLAB® software, which includes dedicated and optimized functions for a variety of image processing tasks. These can readily scripted, along with the necessary mathematical expressions, for particular experimental techniques. The book provides an introduction to some of the optical techniques, and then introduces MATLAB® routines specific to the image processing in experimental mechanics. There are also case studies on particular techniques. As part of the book, a collection of M-files is provided on CD-ROM, which also contains example images and test code. Digital Holography (DH) has brought a new impetus to the field of holography. The fields of imaging, microscopy and metrology have all benefited from these developments. In this paper some of these developments will be described with some applications in the fields of color imaging, amplitude and phase microscopy and dynamic metrology. It is envisaged that this field will rapidly advance in the next couple of years and become an expected imaging and measurement modality especially in the field of micro, nano and bio sciences.

Residual stress induced during manufacturing of injection molded components such as polymethyl methacrylate （PMMA） affects the mechanical and optical properties of these components. These residual stresses can be visualized and quantified by measuring their birefringence. In this paper, a low birefringence polariscope （LBP） is used to measure the whole-field residual stress distribution of these injection molded specimens. Detailed analytical and experimental study is conducted to quantify the residual stress measurement in these materials. A commercial birefringence measurement system was used to validate the results obtained to our measurement system. This study can help in material diagnosis for quality and manufacturing purpose and be useful for understanding of residual stress in imaging or other anolications.

相位恢复与定量相位成像是光学测量与成像技术领域的一个重要课题。传统干涉测量法依赖高度相干光源的干涉叠加,干涉装置复杂,测量环境要求苛刻,引入的散斑噪声极大地限制了传统干涉测量法在显微成像领域的应用。光强传输方程(TIE)作为最具代表性的相位恢复方法之一,为定量相位成像提供了一种新的非干涉手段。近些年来,该方法在国内外得到广泛研究与关注,发展迅速,成果显著,在自适应光学、X射线衍射光学、电子显微学、光学显微成像等领域展现了巨大的应用潜力。从光强传输方程的基本原理、方程求解、光强轴向微分的差分估计、部分相干成像与光场成像等几方面综述了光强传输方程在光学成像领域,特别是定量相位显微成像领域的研究现状与最新进展,并针对现存问题以及今后的研究方向提出了建议。

Infrared thermography determines the surface temperature of an object or human body. It is a promising imaging technology for medical and biological observations due to its contactless and completely non- invasive properties. However, traditional two-dimensional （2D） infrared thermography cannot retain the spatial information, and thus provides only qualitative diagnosis information. A novel real-time three- dimensional （3D） infrared imaging system which takes full advantages of high-speed, high-quality, high- sensitivity, and low-cost in 3D thermograph is presented. We demonstrate the real-time 3D thermal imaging at the speed of 24 frmnes per second （fps）, with resolution of 640 ×480 points. Experimental results demonstrate quantitatively measurement of temperature distribution of 3D surfaces in real-time is realized with this system.

This article focuses on health monitoring of structures using multiple smart *** this research,two fiber-optic sensors,namely fiber Bragg grating(FBG)and fiber-optic polarimetric sensor(FOPS),are investigated for damage detection in the beam *** is used for local strain measurement while FOPS is used for global strain *** FBG and FOPS show significant changes in the strain due to damages in the ***,at the center of the specimen,piezoelectric wafer active sensor(PWAS)is *** electromechanical admittance(EMA)signature of the specimen beam is recorded by *** changes in the amplitudes of the peaks obtained at various frequencies in this EMA signature are analyzed,and it is shown that the peak amplitudes respond differently to damages and to change in ***,multiple smart materials(FBG,FOPS,and PWAS)are used to get improved information on the health of the beam.

Accurate phase retrieval from single fringe pattern is significant for dynamic phase measurement. Although it brings issues of speckle noise and severe non-sinusoidal waveform, the interference fringe pattern by coherent light is still often used for profile measurement, especially for measuring target with low reflective surface. Both simulation and experiment are carried out to study performance of two-dimensional Fourier transform, windowed Fourier transform（including windowed Fourier filtering and windowed Fourier ridges）, and wavelet transform methods. The influence of the speckle noise and non-sinusoidal waveform to those phase retrieval methods is compared and discussed.
