Surface Modification on Ti-30Ta Alloy for Biomedical Application

Titanium and titanium alloys are currently being used for clinical biomedical applications due to their high strength, corrosion resistance and elastic modulus. The Ti-30Ta alloy has gotten extensive application as the important biomedical materials. The substrate surface of the Ti-30Ta alloy was altered either by chemical or topographical surface modification. The biocompatibility of an implant is closely related to its surface properties. Thus surface modification is one of effective methods for improving the biocompatibility of implants. The development status of biomedical materials has been summarized firstly, the biomedical application. In this study Ti-30Ta alloy surface was investigate as-casting (Group 1) modified with alkaline and heat-treatments in NaOH with 1.5M at 60°C for 24 hrs (Group 2), alkaline and heat-treatments with SBF-coatings by immersion in NaOH and SBFX5 for 24hrs (Group 3), anodization process was performed in an electrolyte solution containing HF (48%) and H2SO4 (98%) with the addition of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) 35V for 40 min (Group 4) and ion beam etching with 1200 eV ions with a beam current of 200 mA for a 3 hrs etch (Group 5). SEM was used to investigate the topography, EDS the chemical composition, and surface energy was evaluate with water contact angle measurement. SEM results show different structure on the surface for each group. EDS spectra identified similarity on Group 1, 4 and 5. The results indicate for group 2 an amorphous sodium tantalate hydrogel layer on the substrate surface and for group 3 the apatite nucleation on substrate surface. The Group 4 shows unorganized and vertically nanotubes and Group 5 shows a little alteration in the topography on the substrate surfaces. Overall the contact angle shows Group 5 the most hydrophobic and Group 4 the most hydrophilic. The study indicates Group 3 and 4 with potential for biomedical application. Subterranean termites （Isoptera： rhinotermitidae）： Exploitation of equivalent food resources with different forms of placement

Coptotermes gestroi and Heterotermes tenuis have been described as important urban pests in Brazil. The establishment of control technologies using baits that consider the social behavior of termites requires a better knowledge of their foraging behavior. Thus, this study analyzed the feeding behavior of these species with three different forms of food placement： food on the surface of a substrate and food either partially or completely buried in the substrate. Experimental arenas were composed of a central chamber connected to three food chambers. Each central chamber contained 550 foragers of C. gestroi or 517 foragers of 11. tenuis. Blocks of pinus elliottii were placed in the different food chambers. After 28 days, the consumption of each wood block and the percentage of foraging individuals recruited for food chambers were verified in relation to the total survival rate obtained for each one of the 20 replicates. results showed that completely buried food was most consumed for H. tenuis and presented a higher recruitment rate of workers and soldiers for both species. Although the consumption had non-significant differences for C. gestroi, these termites exhibited a tendency to prefer completely buried food. In these conditions, it can be concluded that the forms of food placement used in the present research influenced the recruitment of individuals for both species. Data also suggests that when the foraging subterranean termites find food resources in the tunneling substrate, they tend to concentrate their efforts on it, a behavior regime that reduces exposure to external environment.

Visual reweighting in postural control is less adaptative in older adults

postural control is based upon the fusion of sensory cues coming from multiple sources requiring continuously adaptation that may be altered due to aging, leading to the poor postural equilibrium in older adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the adaptation in the relationship between the visual information and the body sway in older adults. Fifteen older (70 ± 7.6 years) and 15 younger adults (19 ± 1.1 years) stood upright inside of a moving room. Each participant performed 7 trials, each lasting 60 s, in which in the first 3 trials the room oscillated at 0.2 Hz, amplitude of 0.6 cm, and peak-to-peak velocity of 0.6 cm/s. In the fourth trial, the room oscillated at 0.2 Hz but with amplitude of 3.5 cm and peak-to-peak velocity of 3.5 cm/s. In the following 3 trials, the room oscillated with the same parameters of the first three trials. Body sway magnitude was examined through mean sway amplitude, and the relationship between visual information and induced body sway was examined through coherence and gain. Visual manipulation induced corresponding body sway in both older and younger adults, with no difference being observed between groups in the first three trials. In the fourth trial, mean sway amplitude, coherence and gain values were higher for the older compared to younger adults. Moreover, in the last three trials, older adults still showed higher gain values than observed for the younger adults. Taken together, these results suggest that older adults adapt to abrupt changes in visual cues, but not with the same magnitude as younger adults. Yet, older adults do not take advantage of experienced sensory changes in order to adapt the use of the vision information in the following experiences, indicating the less capability of adaptation to the sensory changes.

Genotoxic potential of the Insecticide Imidacloprid in a Non-Target Organism (<i>Oreochromis niloticus</i>-pisces)

The indiscriminate use of pesticides has become a serious environmental concern. Insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) is the second most widely used pesticides worldwide. In 2010, 1.934 tons of IMI were sold in Brazil, mostly to be used in sugarcane crops. Several studies have detected its presence in the aquatic environment constituting a risk to non-target organisms. The aquatic animals are organisms used for environmental biomonitoring worldwide. They are considered excellent genetic models to detect environmental mutagens. Among animal species, the fish Oreochromis niloticus, commonly known as Nile tilapia, has been used to evaluate DNA damage. The present study therefore evaluated the effect of IMI on the genetic material of Oreochromis niloticus (pisces) erythrocytes exposed to different concentration (250;125 and 62.5 μg/L) of IMI used in growing sugarcane. The effect of the IMI was measured using the comet assay and the micronucleus (MN) test, assays that detected genotoxic damage. The results in the comet assay demonstrated that the concentrations tested induced primary damage to DNA. They also proved the occurrence of MN and nuclear abnormalities at the higher concentration used in the micronuclei and other nuclear abnormalities test. The insecticide IMI induced primary DNA damage at all concentrations and damage at the chromosomal level at the highest concentration tested. The results of this study show the potential risk of IMI in a non-target organism.

本文报道纳特竖蟾(Eupemphix nattereri Steindachner,1863)巴西3个产地标本的核型,均为2n=22,由1对端部和10对中或亚中部着丝点染色体组成。仅一对NOrs位于No.11染色体对长臂端部,而其位置有别于常见的具有标志性意义的近着丝点位置。该NOrs的位置为rDNA为探针的荧光原位杂交(FISH)所确认。各染色体对中,着丝点C-带明显,插入或端带偶见。某些标本的No.8同源染色体对间C-带的大小随异染色质化的程度不同而变化。居于较小的实验标本量,这种在3个产地的雌或雄性标本之一中观察到的C-带异型现象可能为种下细胞地理学变异,亦或为细胞学意义的性染体分化。3产地之一的标本核型的No.11着丝点C-带异染色质化的程度较高。CMA3染色检测到部分GC-rich区域,DApI染色未显示任何AT-rich区。成功获得BrdU复制带,并将其与滑背蟾类动物(leiuperid)中近缘属及物种进行对比分析。比较结果表明,纳特竖蟾的核型与斑符泡蟾种组(physalaemus signifergroup)难以相互区别,而与肿肋蟾属(pleurodema Tschudi,1838)极为相似。核型数据支持形态学上将纳特竖蟾、二光肿肋蟾[pleurodema diplolister(peters,1870)]和短头肿肋蟾[***(Cope,1869)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of silver nitrate in the in vitro development and conservation of passion fruit plants. Experiments were carried out at the Laboratory of Culture and Tissues, in the National Cassava and Fruits research Center (EMBrApA), using microcuttings of passiflora gibertii N. E. Br., previously cultivated in vitro. The microcuttings were placed in MS media supplemented with silver nitrate at concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mg·L-1, and, during 30, 60 and 90 days, the following variables were identified: Shooting length (cm), number of roots, number and coloration of leaves. A completely randomized design with 30 replications in a split-plot scheme was employed. polynomial regression equations were adjusted in analysis of variance to compare averages of treatments. The obtained results support the assumption of high sensitivity of passion fruit tissues to ethylene, which reflects in the lost of vigor and in the induction of culture senescence by its accumulation. Based on obtained results, and in order to mitigate this problem, it is possible to indicate an addition of 2 mg·L-1?of silver nitrate in culture media, for the micropropagation of passion fruit plant, allowing the controlling of the atmosphere inside the culture test tubes, during the establishment of explants and other steps of the process.
