Enhancement of the benthic communities around an isolated island in the Antarctic Ocean

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen Sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sampling was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BEnTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USnEL-type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. Sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. Several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. Significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Abnormal Linguistic Lateralization and Sensory Processing in High Functioning Children with Autism Spectrum Conditions

Brain lateralization for language in high-functioning children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and sensory processing were explored as a part of a neuropsychological profile. A dichotic listening test and the Luria laterality subtest were administered to all participants (including controls) and the sensory profile test only to the ASC group. The usual right ear advantage was not exhibited by children with ASC and anomalies in auditory filtering were found. The sensory profile of 60% of the sample was characterized by hypersensitivity to auditory stimuli, hyposensitivity to vestibular information, high emotional reactions to sensory experiences, poor psychosocial coping strategies, high distractibility and inability to interpret body and facial language. Hyper-responsiveness to environmental auditory stimuli was significantly associated with impaired attention. Similarly, non-adaptive responses to sensory quotidian experiences were strongly connected to poor coping strategies. Our results, although preliminary, contribute to emphasizing the importance of including additional assessment methods such as the dichotic listening and the sensory profile questionnaire in the evaluation of cognitive profile in high-functioning children with ASC to plan an individualized psycho-educative intervention.

Postanesthetic Emergence Delirium in Children: Qualitative Differences between Sevoflurane vs Desflurane: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: Emergence Delirium (ED) is considered a usual complication in pediatric anesthesia. Aim: analyze the quantitative and qualitative differences in ED in children receiving general anesthesia with sevoflurane or desflurane in day case surgery. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and two children, ASA I-II, who required outpatient elective day case surgery, were assigned to receive anesthesia with sevoflurane or desflurane. ED was assessed by a masked investigator using the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale at 5 and 15 minutes (min). Results: Mean time to wake up was shorter with desflurane compared with sevoflurane (6.0 versus 8.3 min, p = 0.0001). The overall incidence of ED was 21.3% and Postoperative Maladaptive Behavior Changes (POMBC) incidence was 22%;however, these were not related. Main factors found to be associated with ED were younger age, postoperative pain and preoperative anxiety. Although there were not statistically significant differences in ED incidence between sevoflurane (26.4%, 95% CI 17.3% - 35.4%) and desflurane anesthesia (16.3%, 95% CI 8.8% - 23.8%) (p = 0.18), scores of items 1 and 2 from PAED scale (eye contact and purposeful actions, items related to the patients’ connection with their surroundings) were significantly higher in sevoflurane than in desflurane group (p = 0.034 and p = 0.021 respectively). Conclusion: Recovery after anesthetic maintenance with desflurane is faster and as safe as sevoflurane, including postoperative behavioral disorders. Although desflurane did not statistically decrease ED incidence as compared with sevoflurane, patients who were agitated with desflurane were qualitatively less disoriented and disconnected from their surroundings.

About an Ambiguity Appearing on the Hamiltonian Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

We study classical and quantum dynamics of the symmetric harmonic oscillator and the symmetric bouncer defined in 2-D. For these systems we get each of them for two different constants of motion, two Lagrangians and two Hamiltonians which describe the same classical dynamics. However, the quantization of these systems (using Schrödinger equation), using their two equivalents Hamiltonian, describes different quantum dynamics for each of them. This represents an ambiguity on the Hamiltonian formulation of the Quantum Mechanics.

Steatosis recovery after treatment with a balanced sunflower or olive oil-based diet: Involvement of perisinusoidal stellate cells

AIM： To analyze the relationship between perisinusoidal stellate cell （PSC） activation and the dietary fat quantity and composition in the treatment of hepatic steatosis. METHODS： Using an experimental rat model of steatosis based on the intake of a hyperlipidic diet （14% fat as olive oil or sunflower oil, HL-O and HL-S, respectively）, we analyzed the liver＇s capability of recovery after the treatment with a normal-lipidic diet （5% fat as olive oil or sunflower oil, nL-O and nL-S, respectively） by immunoo/tochemical and Western blot analysis of glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） expression in PSCs, collagen quantification and serum aminotransferase determination. RESULTS： The fatty infiltration in the steatotic livers decreased after the treatment with both nL diets, indicating liver recovery. This decrease was accompanied with a lower collagen deposition and aminotransferase level as well as changes in the PSC population that increased the GFAP expression. The above-mentioned effects were more pronounced in animals fed on nL-O based diet. COnCLUSIOn： Treatment with a balanced diet enriched in olive oil contributes to the liver recovery from a steatotic process. The PSC phenotype is a marker of this hepatic-recovery model.

Structural and magnetic studies of monophasic maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) magnetic nanocrystallites (MnCs) synthesized by the co-precipitation chemical route are reported in this paper. For the synthesis, a starting precursor of magnetite (Fe3O4) in basic medium was oxidized at room temperature by adjusting the pH = 3.5 at 80°C in an acidic medium without surfactants. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows widened peaks indicating nanometric size and Rietveld Refinement confirms only one single-phase assigned to γ-Fe2O3 MnCs. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) demonstrates the formation of nanoparticles with diameter around D ≈ 6.8 ± 0.1 nm which is in good agreement with Rietveld Refinement (6.4 ± 1 nm). A selected area electron diffraction pattern was carried out to complement the study of the crystalline structure of the γ-Fe2O3 MnCs. M(H) measurements taken at different temperatures show almost zero coercivity and remanence indicating superparamagnetic domain and high magnetic saturation.

BACKGROUnD: This study aimed to compare the rates of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies and outcomes in patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Spain from 2003 to 2013. METHODS: We collected all cases of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomies using national hospital discharge data and evaluated the annual cholecystectomy rates stratiifed by T2DM status. We analyzed tendency for in-hospital mortality (IHM). We also analyzed the impact of T2DM on IHM in patients who underwent cholecystectomies. RESULTS: We identiifed 611 533 cholecystectomies (71.3%laparoscopic) in the patients, in whom 78 227 (12.8%) patients had T2DM. The rates of open cholecystectomies were 3-fold higher (130.0/105 vs 41.1/105) in patients with T2DM than in those without T2DM, and the rate of laparoscopic cholecys-tectomies was almost 2-fold higher (195.2/105 vs 111.8/105) in patients with T2DM. The annual rate of laparoscopic pro-cedures showed an 11-year relative increase of 88.3% (from 117.0/105 to 220.3/105) in T2DM and 49.2% (from 79.2/105 to 118.2/105) in patients without T2DM (Pn procedures showed an 11-year relative decrease of 27.6% in patients with T2DM and 37.9% in those without T2DM (Pncy laparoscopic cho-lecystectomy was increased in the 11 years, whereas the rate of emergency open cholecystectomies was decreased (both Panalysis revealed that older age, higher comorbidity and emergency cholecystectomy were associated with a higher IHM. Compared with patients without T2DM, patients with T2DM demonstrated a lower IHM after open cholecystectomy [OR=0.82 (0.78-0.87)], but a higher IHM after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (OR=1.18 (1.03-1.35))Time-trend analyses showed a signiifcant reduction in IHM in patients with or without T2DM after the two procedures. Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the second leading cause of cancer-related death *** five-year survival rate of CRC patients depends on the stage at diagnosis,being higher than 80%when CRC is diagnosed in the early stages but lower than 10%when CRC is diagnosed in advanced *** against specific CRC autoantigens(tumor-associated antigens(TAAs))in the sera of patients have been widely demonstrated to aid in early ***,we herein aim to identify autoantigens target of autoantibodies specific to CRC that possess a significant ability to discriminate between CRC patients and healthy individuals by means of liquid *** that end,we examined the protein content of the exosomes released by five CRC cell lines and tissue samples from CRC patients by means of immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry analysis.A total of 103 proteins were identified as potential autoantigens specific to *** bioinformatics and meta-analysis,we selected 15 proteins that are more likely to be actual CRC autoantigens in order to evaluate their role in CRC prognosis by Western blot(WB)and immunohistochemistry(IHC).We found dysregulation at the protein level for 11 of these proteins in both tissue and plasma exosome samples from patients,along with an association of nine of these proteins with CRC *** validation,all but one showed a statistically significant high diagnostic ability to distinguish CRC patients and individuals with premalignant lesions from healthy individuals,either by luminescence Halotag-based beads,or by a multiplexed biosensing platform involving the use of magnetic microcarriers as solid support modified with covalently immobilized Halotag fusion proteins constructed for CRC *** together,our results highlight the usefulness of the approach defined here to identify the TAAs specific to chronic diseases;they also demonstrate that the measurement of autoantibody levels in plasma against the TAAs identified here

Decrease in the Hospital Stay of neonates with Suspected nosocomial Sepsis with the Use of a Molecular Biology Technique

Introduction: Diagnostic alternatives that allow microbial identification in blood, such as molecular biology;have shown utility in neonatal sepsis. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a Light Cycler SeptiFast test (LCSF) on days of hospital stay and the use of newborn (nB) antibiotics with suspected sepsis. Methods: We included nB with LCSF test and blood culture (cases) and nB with only blood culture (controls). We evaluated the days of stay, days of antimicrobial use and number of deaths. Statistic analysis: Descriptive statistics was used. The association between the use of LCSF and variables such as mortality, days of stay, use of antimicrobials, and use of mechanical ventilation was analyzed by odds ratio with 95% CI. Results: We included 20 subjects in the case group and 40 in the control group. 8 (40%) of the cases were positive vs 6 (15%) of the controls in the control group. In the controls, the average days of stay were 65 + 15 vs 35 + 10 days of the cases (p Conclusions: The LCSF test influences the days of hospital stay, but does not impact mortality or the use of antimicrobials.
