Predicting the potential of sludge dewatering liquors to recover nutrients as struvite biominerals

Phosphorus and nutrient recovery from wastewater as mineral salts can support local replenishment of fertilisers and reduce mining,contributing to the circular *** and related streams are rich in nutrients,however;there is need to develop bio-based processes to recover *** study investigates the fractions of phosphorus(P)used by Brevibacterium antiquum to form struvite biominerals(bio-struvite)in wastewater sludge dewatering *** 72h of incubation,25.6 mg P/l were recovered as bio-struvite from 12.4 mg P/l organic plus condensed P and 13.2 mg P/l of *** potential of sludge dewatering liquors to recover nutrients as struvite was investigated by characterising ten types of sludge liquors(originating from primary,secondary sludge,feed to anaerobic digester and digestate,from 3 types of wastewater treatment plants)for their P fractions together with other parameters relevant for *** *** indicated that liquors obtained from primary sludge,feed to anaerobic digesters and digestate were the most suitable to produce biostruvite,as these were found to frequently have a high content of organic and condensed P,between to 276-732 mg P/***,from all the investigated sites,presented a higher potential for bio-struvite production than with conventional struvite *** study demonstrated that *** could convert organic and condensed P into bio-struvite,and this opens up a completely new way to recover forms of phosphorus that are not typically available for nutrient recovery in a single process.

Fern extracts potentiate fluconazole activity and inhibit morphological changes in Candida species

Objective: To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species lygodium venustum(l. venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos(P. calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis ***: The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity, as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MiC), minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also ***: The extract obtained from l. venustum presented a MiC > 8 192 mg/m l, while the extract obtained from and P. calomelanos presented a MiC = 8 192 mg/m l, indicating that they present weak antifungal activity. However, combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug. At different experimental conditions, such as concentration of the extract and type of strain, the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation, indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the ***: The extracts obtained from the fern species l. venustum and P. calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity. However, P. calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species, indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology. Therefore, novel studies are required to characterize the interference of these extracts in the virulence and pathogenicity of Candida species as well as the potential of fern species to treat fungal infections.

Objective: To identify the main chemical classes of compounds from aqueous extract of Enterolobium contortisiliquum(E. contortisiliquum) seed bark and to evaluate its antibacterial activity, as well as its potential to increase the activity of antibiotics against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia ***: Different classes of compounds in the aqueous extract of E. contortisiliquum were evaluated based on the visual changes in the coloration and the formation of precipitate after the addition of specific reagents. The antibacterial activity of the extract and its potential to increase of antibiotic activity of antibiotics drugs, gentamicin and norfloxacin was determined by using the microdilution ***: Our results demonstrated that the following secondary metabolites were presented in E. contortisiliquum seed bark: flavones, flavonols, xanthones, flavononols,chalcones, aurones, flavones and catechins. The extract itself had very low antibacterial activity against all bacterial strains tested(MiC ≥ 1024 μg/m l), but there was an increase in the antibiotic activity of gentamicin and norfloxacin when combined in the subinhibitory concentration(i.e., MiC/8).Conclusions: Our data suggests that E. contortisiliquum seed bark may be an alternative source for new drugs with the potential to increase antibiotic activity against different strains of bacteria.

The present study aims to demonstrate the chemical composition of the ethanolic extract of Sarcomphalus joazeiro bark and to evaluate its antibacterial and antibiofilm *** that,the ethanolic extract of the stem bark was prepared,and chemical characterization was carried out in *** inhibitory concentration and antibiotic modification test were performed by the microdilution *** and antiformation assays were evaluated by the crystal violet *** the chemical characterization,the presence of 24 peaks was *** activity showed minimum inhibitory concentration≥2048μg/*** the evaluations of the potentiating activity,synergism was the most *** the formation analysis,it was observed that most strains showed moderate biofilm *** was concluded that saponin derivatives are the major secondary metabolites in the analyzed extract and that it presents relevant synergism with the antibiotics studied and a significant ability to inhibit bacterial biofilm formation.

Risk Factors Associated with Acinetobacter baumannii infections in Patients in an intensive Care Unit of a Public Hospital in Paraná

To identify risk factors for A. baumannii infection in patients hospitalized in an intensive Care Unit (iCU) of a tertiary public hospital in Paraná, Brazil, a retrospective paired case-control study (ratio 1:2) was conducted from January 2018 to December 2020. Patients in the case group were hospitalized in the iCU with A. baumanni (n = 68 cases) and were compared with patients in the control group, without infection by A. baumannii (n = 136). Both were matched by age (±10 years), sex, and iCU stay (±5 days). Conditional multiple logistic regression was used to determine statistically significant risk factors based on the results of bivariate analyses. Mortality was higher in infected (cases) than in non-infected patients (51.5% vs. 39.7%). The incidence and bacterial resistance increased annually. At bivariate analysis, cases had longer hospital stays (median 35 vs. 22 days, p A. baumannii and antimicrobial resistance. There is need for surveillance, and constant evaluation of control actions. Risk factors were colonization, previous hospitalization, and hospitalization time. This is essential for the decision-making of professionals and optimization of prevention, control, and therapeutic management actions.
