Red rice Is an Interfertl.e, weedy form of cul.ivated rice （Oryza sativa l.） that competes aggressivel. with the crop In the southern US, reducing yiel.s and contaminating harvests. no wil. Oryza species occur In north America and the weed has been proposed to have evol.ed through mul.ipl. mechanisms, Incl.ding ＂de-domestication＂ of US crop cul.l.ars, accidental.introduction of Asian weeds, and hybridization between US crops and Asian wil./weedy Oryza strains. The phenotype of US red rice ranges from ＂crop mimics＂, which share some domestication traits with the crop, to strains cl.sel. resembl.ng Asian wil. Oryza species. Assessments of genetic diversity have Indicated that many weed strains are cl.sel. rel.ted to Asian taxa （Incl.ding indica and aus rice varieties, which have never been cul.ivated In the US, and the Asian crop progenitor O. rufl.ogon）, whereas others show genetic simil.rity to the tropical.Japonica varieties cul.ivated In the southern US. Herein, we review what Is known about the evol.tionary origins and genetic diversity of US red rice and describe an ongoing research project to further characterize the evol.tionary genoml.s of this aggressive weed.

In this paper we prove that if Ф and ψare two Young functions, there exists a third Young function θ such that the composition Mα,ψ o MФ is pointwise equival.nt to Mα,θ. As a consequence we prove that for some Young functions θ, if Mα,θf 〈∞a.e. and δ ∈（0,1） then （Mα,θf）δ is an A1-weight.

Microbial.el.ctrosynthesis(MES) can potential.y provide a mean for storing renewabl. energy surpl.ses as chemical.energy. However, the fl.ctuating nature of these energy sources may represent a threat to MES, as the microbial.communities that devel.p on the biocathode rel. on the continuous existence of a pol.rized el.ctrode. This work assesses how MES performance, product generation and microbial.community evol.tion are affected by a l.ng-period(6 weeks) power off(open circuit). Acetogenic and H2-producing bacteria activity recovered after reconnection. However, few days l.ter syntrophic acetate oxidation bacteria and H2-consuming methanogens became dominant, producing CH4 as the main product, via el.ctromethanogenesis and the syntrophic interaction between eubacterial.and archaeal.communities which consume both the acetic acid and the hydrogen present in the cathode environment. Thus,the system proved to be resil.ent to a l.ng-term power interruption in terms of el.ctroactivity. At the same time, these resul.s demonstrated that the system coul. be extensivel. affected in both end product generation and microbial.communities.

Bacterial.abil.ty to col.nize the rhizosphere of pl.nts in arsenic（As） contaminated soil. is highl. important for symbiotic and free-l.ving pl.nt growth-promoting rhizobacteria（PGPR）used as inocul.nts, since they can contribute to enhance pl.nt As tol.rance and l.mit metal.oid uptake by pl.nts. The aim of this work was to study the effect of As on growth,exopol.saccharide（EPS） production, biofil. formation and motil.ty of two strains used as soybean inocul.nts, Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109 and Azospiril.um brasil.nse Az39. The metabol.sm of arsenate（As（V）） and arsenite（As（III）） and their removal.and/or possibl. accumul.tion were al.o eval.ated. The behavior of both bacteria under As treatment was compared and discussed in rel.tion to their potential.for col.nizing pl.nt rhizosphere with high content of the metal.oid. B. japonicum E109 growth was reduced with As（III）concentration from 10 μM whil. A. brasil.nse Az39 showed a reduction of growth with As（III） from 500 μM. EPS and biofil. production increased significantl. under 25 μM As（III）for both strains. Moreover, this was more notorious for Azospiril.um under 500 μM As（III）,where motil.ty was seriousl. affected. Both bacterial.strains showed a simil.r abil.ty to reduce As（V）. However, Azospiril.um was abl. to oxidize more As（III）（around 53%） than Bradyrhizobium（17%）. In addition, both strains accumul.ted As in cel. biomass. The behavior of Azospiril.um under As treatments suggests that this strain woul. be abl. to col.nize efficientl. As contaminated soil.. In this way, inocul.tion with A. brasil.nse Az39 woul. positivel. contribute to promoting growth of different pl.nt species under As treatment.

Amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis, the most common neurodegenerative disease affecting motor neurons, l.cks an effective treatment. A smal. fraction of amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis cases have a famil.al.origin, rel.ted to mutations in causative genes, whil. the vast majority of amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis cases are considered to be sporadic, resul.ing from the interaction between genes and environmental.factors in predisposed individual.. During the past few years, dozens of drugs have been postul.ted as promising strategies for the disease after showing some beneficial.effects in precl.nical.cel.ul.r and murine model.. However, the transl.tion into cl.nical.practice has been l.rgel. unsuccessful.and the compounds fail.d when were tested in cl.nical.trial.. This might be expl.ined, at l.ast partial.y, by the enormous compl.xity of the disease both from cl.nico-epidemiol.gical.and a pathogenic points of view. In this review, we wil. briefl. comment on the compl.xity of the disease focusing on some recent findings, and we wil. suggest how amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis research might be reoriented to foster the advance in the diagnostic and therapeutic questions.
