Model Study: The genus Acinetobacter is composed of opportunistic pathogens that mainly affects immunocompromised and patients during a prolonged hospitalization period. A. baumannii can survive in the hospital setting at various locations such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis machines, ventilation systems, water sources, skin and mucous membranes of health professionals and patients, drug preparations and disinfectants among others. Antimicrobials are essential for the treatment of infections, so their use has become common, and often inappropriate and abusive. This pathogen has presented multi-resistance to several classes of antimicrobials and has become a major cause of death in hospitals. Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of Acinetobacter baumannii in clinical samples from the Laboratory of Clinical analyzes, HCSL of Pouso Alegre, MG. Methods: All the samples referring to the patients of the Samuel Libanio Clinical Hospital including most of the specialties were evaluated. From the positive samples for Acinetobacter baumannii the medical records of hospitalized patients were evaluated. From the medical records, data were obtained as gender and age of the patient, place of hospitalization, together with month and year of the laboratory procedure. Result: A total of 14,859 samples of diverse materials were evaluated, being 80 (0.5%) samples positive for Acinetobacter baumannii. Of these positive samples, the largest occurrences were identified in male patients 59 (73.7%), aged over 60 years 37 (46.3%). The most affected hospital sector was Adult ICU with 44 (55.0%) of the cases. In May 2015, there were 5 (6.3%) cases registered and in May 2016, 16 (20.0%) cases. The clinical material with the highest occurrence of Acinetobacter baumannii was Mini Bal 29 (36.3%). Treatment of Chronic Oxaliplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Oxaliplatin is a platinum-derivative chemotherapeutic agent used in digestive tumours, in the adjuvant and metastatic setting. Oxaliplatin can cause a chronic peripheral sensory neuropathy which impacts the quality of life and is dose limiting. To date, no therapeutic strategies have proved effective in the treatment of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OIPN). Methods: A computerized search of the literature on PubMed database was performed. Publisher original articles were included if they focused on treatment of peripheral neuropathy among patients submitted to oxaliplatin. Eleven out of 242 reviewed papers met our inclusion criteria and were subjected to a 19-item quality checklist. Results: The included studies differed with respect to study design, patient population and sample size, neuropathic symptoms assessment and efficacy measure. Most studies had an adequate quality. Ten trials tested one drug, and one pilot study tested a non-pharmacological treatment—the neurofeedback. Of these, 3 trials included only patients submitted to oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. Duloxetine showed moderate efficacy in 3 trials. Topical treatment with capsaicin or 10% amitriptyline was promisors in 2 single-arm trials with a few samples.

Use of High Definition Multileaf Colimator for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia

In the present work, a treatment technique for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) using LINAC radiosurgery is shown. The technique is based on the optimization of ten static arcs in such a way as to minimize the overlapping of the treatment fields with the brainstem. We will call this technique brainstem-optimized (BO). The results are compared with another technique described in the literature known as a virtual cone (VC). The comparison of dosimetry results that have been carried out essentially shows that the doses in the brainstem V12Gy-brainstem, D0.5cm3-brainstem and D0.035 cm3-brainstem are lower in the BO versus VC technique, and with the parameters V50% (whole brain) and V12Gy-cerebrum higher in BO versus VC. Our goal is to keep the dose to the brainstem as low as possible and, if possible, at most between 12 Gy and 15 Gy. The BO technique meets our purposes and is considered clinically acceptable at our institution.

Canine Leptospirosis Serology in Southern Mexico City

Background: Leptospirosis is an important zooanthroponotic disease spread worldwide which infection is recognized as a re-emergent disease. Leptospirosis is a systemic disease of humans and domestic animals, mainly dogs, cattle and swine, characterized by fever, renal and hepatic insufficiency, pulmonary manifestations and reproductive failure. Objective: To study the seroprevalence of anti-Leptospira antibodies in an urban canine population. Materials and Methods: The study was performed in March 2014 in stray dogs that had been captured in the districts of Coyoacan, Iztapalapa, Iztacalco and Benito juarez in Mexico City;117 dogs were analyzed, from each of which 5 ml of blood were obtained. Serology was performed using a MAT test (Microscopic Agglutination Test), finding that the antigens corresponded to 13 serotypes of Leptospirainterrogans. Three age groups were formed: Group 1) younger than a year (n = 28), Group 2) 1 to 6 years (n = 75), and Group 3) older than 6 years (n = 14). Results: Of the analyzed sera, 28.2% were seropositive to one or more Leptospira serotypes, 74% of the positive seracoagglutinated with two or more serotypes. The most frequent serotypes were: Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae and Portland-vere. Serotypes Canicola, Pyrogenes, and Bratislava resulted statistically significant (p 0.001). The presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies in the blood of animals of 1 to 6 years resulted with a p 0.001. The sera from Iztapalapa reacted to nine serotypes. Conclusion: The 28.2% of seropositivity indicates Leptospira transmission in the canine population that was studied could exhibit a potential public health risk.

Vapor Phase Decarbonylation of Furfural to Furan over Nickel Supported on SBA-15 Silica Catalysts

Vapor-phase transformations of furfural over SBA-15 silica supported Ni catalysts under H2 in a continuous-flow reactor at atmospheric pressure and 170°C and 230°C were investigated. Two different samples having Ni loadings of 5 and 20 wt% (denoted here by SBA-5Ni and SBA-20Ni, respectively) were prepared by impregnation and characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy, N2 sorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Furan and furfuryl alcohol were two primary products resulting, respectively, from decarbonylation and hydrogenation of furfural. Under the conditions of the study, both reactions exhibited structure sensitivity evidenced by changes in product selectivities with variable Ni loadings. Compared with SBA-20Ni, the 5 wt% Ni catalyst showed better catalytic activity, reaching a furfural conversion of 100 mol% and a selectivity to furan of 98 mol%, after 5 h of time-on-stream at 230°C.

Objective： analysis of abstinence rates of smokers per gender at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months in a Smoking Cessation Unit from january 2008 to December 2009. Methods： Descriptive retrospective study. analysis of socio-demographic variables, smoking patterns, associated comorbidities, continuous abstinence rates, success, relapses, failure and dropping out. Results： 278 smokers started treatment （33%）; 55.4% males and 44.6% females （mean age of 48.3 and 44.06 years, respectively）. The main associated comorbidities were： psychiatric （38.7%）, cardiovascular （dyslipemia 25%） and respiratory （COPD （chronic obstructive pulmonary disease） 9.7%） in females; cardiovascular （dyslipemia 34.4%）, psychiatric （34.4%） and respiratory （COPD 19.5%） in males. VRN （Varenicline） was prescribed in 40.2% males and 32.2% females; NRT （nicotine replacement therapy） was used in 46.6% and 38.7%, respectively; bupropion was employed in 6.5% and 21.8%, respectively. Psychological counseling was offered only to 7.8% males and 8.1% females. The continuous abstinence rates in males at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months were 51.3%, 37.7%, 32.5% and 30.5%, respectively, and were 45.2%, 29.8%, 25.0% and 24.2% for females. Failure was 9.7% for females and 18.8% for males. Success was more frequent for those on VRN （n = 41 males; n = 12 females）. No relapses were indicated for 42 females and 71 males. The percentage of relapses was higher at 3 months （29.0% females, 19.5% males）. Conclusions： The study observed differences in treating abstinence between genders （in the abstinence rates and failure index）. This implies having to consider incorporating the gender variable into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of smoking.

Influence of Technological Operations in the Dissolved Oxygen Content of Wines

Oxygen plays a crucial role in oenology. The oxygen leads to changes in the chemical and sensory profile of wines. On one hand, the impact of moderate oxygen exposure of red wine has a positive effect in its colour, aromatic bouquet and mouth-feel properties. On the other hand, oxygen has a negative effect on white wine＇s quality, as well as the sensory and compositional levels. The purpose of this study was to quantify the dissolved oxygen in red and white wine, during different cellar operations such as racking, tartaric stabilization, filtering and bottling. The techniques that contribute most to the enrichment of oxygen in wine are： cold tartaric stabilization （2.29 mg/L, white wines）, bottling （1.38 mg/L red wines and 1.11 mg/L white wines） and bag-in-box filling （2.47 mg/L red wines; 2.22 mg/L white wines）. After identifying the most critical technical operations in wine making, preventive and corrective measures had to be taken to reduce the dissolved oxygen content of wines, as well as preventing their depreciation.

Contribution of endosonography in an uncommon case of pancreatic cysts

Here we present the case of a 35-year-old female patient with long standing dyspepsia and imaging studies showing the presence of multiple cysts in the head and tail of the pancreas. The patient underwent endosonography that confirmed the presence of multiple simple cysts throughout the entirety of the pancreas without dilation of the pancreatic duct. The majority of the cysts were less than one centimeter in size, and the largest cyst showed a honeycomb *** of aspirates from the two largest cysts was compatible with benign pancreatic cysts. Endosonography also revealed cysts within the left kidney and spleen. Genetic testing confirmed Von Hippel-Lindau disease. We highlight this case because it is unusual for Von Hippel-Lindau disease, a rare clinical entity, to present solely with cysts in the absence of more common manifestations, such as hemangioblastomas in the central nervous system and malignancy.
