Motivations for and barriers to innovation in non-profit organizations: The case of nursing homes in Northern Portugal

To contribute to the empirical literature on innovation in non-profit organizations,this study examines innovation in Private Social Solidarity Institutions with social responses for the elderly in Northern *** enriches the literature by clarifying the concept of innovation applied to non-profit organizations,which represents a perspective different from the business ***,it is important to support the innovation decisionmaking process in similar non-profit *** this study,the population was surveyed through questionnaires based on the PUBLIN research project,which has already been applied in different countries,and the targets were employees of organizations with social responses for the *** sample is small,with 28 respondent institutions and 51 employees,but it is representative,as it includes institutions from all districts in Northern *** study employed a quantitative approach,particularly factor analysis,multiple linear regression,and correlation analyses,using scales already applied in other dimensions of the social sector,to understand the effect of each innovation dimension/determinant on creativity and innovation in nonprofit *** results show that in these organizations with social responses for the elderly,learning orientation,risk-taking,and job satisfaction have a positive impact on innovation.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with electrical conductivity associated to mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) on neuro-muscular regeneration after ***: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-polypyrrole(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibialis anterior muscles were processed for stereological studies after 20 wk. The functional recovery was assessed serially for gait biomechanical analysis, by extensor postural thrust, sciatic functional index and static sciatic functionalindex(SSI), and by withdrawal reflex latency(WRL). In vitro studies included cytocompatibility, flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and karyotype analysis of the MSCs. Histopathology of lung, liver, kidneys, and regional lymph nodes ensured the biomaterials biocompatibility. RESULTS: SSI remained negative throughout and independently from treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the acute effect of ingesting ginger infusion on energy metabolism,appetite responses,and food intake in healthy *** is a clinical(RBR-9ZJGQM),randomized,open,and crossover study with a minimum interval of seven days between *** drinks,ginger infusion(2 g)and water(control)were served with a standard *** has 21 volunteers of both sexes(18–40 years old,18.5–26 kg/m2).Consumption of ginger tea increased on average 95.5±27.4 kcal/day the non-nitrogen energy expenditure after 240 min of ingestion(p=0.002).There was a significant effect of ginger on diet-induced thermogenesis(difference between ginger tea treatment ***:113.0±43.0 kcal/day,p=0.016).However,appetitive responses and prospective food intake did not differ between ginger tea and water intake.

BACKGROUND Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency(AATD)is a codominant autosomal hereditary condition that predisposes patients to the development of lung and/or liver disease,and Pi*Z allele is the most clinically relevant *** To evaluate the impact of clinical parameters and AATD phenotypes,particularly the Pi*Z allele,in liver *** Cross-sectional cohort study including consecutive patients with AATD followed in Pulmonology or Hepatology *** Included 69 patients,49.3%had Pi*MZ phenotype and 10.1%Pi**** age≥55 years,age at diagnosis≥41 years and AAT at diagnosisdaemia,metabolic syndrome,and regular alcohol consumption were more likely to have a NFS not excluding advanced fibrosis(P<0.001,P=0.002,P=0.008,P<0.001,P=0.033).Patients with at least one Pi*Z allele and type 2 DM were 8 times more likely to have liver stiffness measurement≥7.1 kPa(P=0.040).CONCLUSION Risk factors for liver disease in AATD included an age≥50 years,age at diagnosis≥41 years,metabolic risk factors,regular alcohol consumption,at least one Pi*Z allele,and AAT value at diagnosis<77 mg/*** created an algorithm for liver disease screening in AATD patients to use in primary care,selecting those to be referred to Hepatology consultation.

The new properties of engineered nanoparti- cles drive the need for new knowledge on the safety, fate, behavior and biologic effects of these particles on organisms and ecosystems. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used extensively for a wide range of applica- tions, e.g, self-cleaning surface coatings, solar cells, water treatment agents, topical sunscreens. Within this scenario increased environmental exposure can be expected but data on the ecotoxicological evaluation ofnanoparticles are still scarce. The main purpose of this work was the evaluation of effects of TiO2 nanoparticles in several organisms, covering different trophic levels, using a battery of aquatic assays. Using fish as a vertebrate model organism tissue histological and ultrastructural observations and the stress enzyme activity were also studied. TiO2 nanoparticles （Aeroxide~ P25）, two phase composition ofanatase （65%） and rutile （35%） with an average particle size value of 27.64-11 nm were used. Results on the ECs0 for the tested aquatic organisms showed toxicity for the bacteria, the algae and the crustacean, being the algae the most sensitive tested organism. The aquatic plant Lemna minor showed no effect on growth. The fish Carassius auratus showed no effect on a 21 day survival test, though at a biochemical level the cytosolic Glutathione-S-Transferase total activity, in intestines, showed a general significant decrease （p〈0.05） after 14 days of exposure for all tested concentrations. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates were observed in the intestine lumen but their internalization by intestine cells could not be confirmed.

目的:比较圆锥角膜患者角膜交联(CXL)、等渗(IR)和低渗核黄素(HR)的结果。方法:回顾性研究,包括29例29眼圆锥角膜患者行角膜交联术,IR组15眼,HR组14眼。参数分析包括(随访1a):最佳矫正视力(BCVA),球体和柱体,中央和较薄处角膜厚度,平均和最大角膜曲率(分别为Km和Kmax),并发症及进展。结果:观察到两组的BCVA提高:治疗前IR组为0.26±0.57,HR组为0.47±0.72。术后1a,IR组为0.13±0.79,HR组为0.29±1.52,IR组BCVA更高(P=0.018)。术后1mo,两组中央角膜厚度(μm)均减少,但在接下来的数月中增加:术前IR组为497±28μm,HR组为432±14μm;术后1a,IR组为480±31μm,HR组为424±15μm。较薄处角膜厚度也是如此,术前IR组为487±29μm,HR组为410±20μm;术后1a,IR组为468±33μm,HR组为413±13μm。两组中Km和Kmax均降低。每组6眼呈现短暂的混浊,无持续性混浊。结论:在中央角膜厚度<400μm的患者中,HR的使用似乎是一个有效的替代执行传统CXL的技术。

The Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) stands out among the chronic non-transmissible pathologies that impact the cause and/or aggravation of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) on a global level, as the disease is an underestimated disorder due to non-perceptive symptoms and associated with factors and risk markers of another CVD. Therefore, establishing the risk of progression and aggravation of the SAH, according the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), allows to reducing morbidity and improving preventative measures for DCVs. This observational and transversal study approaches the data collection of patient records at the Health Family Strategy of Senhor do Bonfim, BA, which established differences by descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (correlation and regression). The aspects of hypertension associated with risk factors for atherosclerosis were analyzed, determining the risk of developing cardiovascular events in 10 years by FRS. From 432 families, 746 patients were selected, of which 340 are hypertensive individuals (SAH = 45.57%) and 406 (NSAH = 54.42%) non-hypertensives. Among the SAH the majority (31.17%) was in the age range of 63 - 77, but, in both groups, women were in stronger number. There was greater prevalence in SAH for all the characteristics analyzed, smoking (13.20%), sedentary (29.41%) and cardiovascular accident (22.60%). The SAH group is more susceptive to the CVD progress in 10 years by FRS (P analyzed as was expected, without differences between the linear correlation and regression, indicating the physio-metabolic equilibrium of the factors and markers evaluated by FRS. Already in SAH group, despite the correlations have been significant too, the regression analysis revealed that only Total Cholesterol (P = 0.0086);LDL (P < 0.0001), Glucose (P < 0.0006) and Age (P < 0.0001) have significative association with FRS. Grapes are important sources of antioxidants compounds and one of the most used varieties to elaborate juices is ＂isabel＂, or ＂isabella＂, as it is called in North-America. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of isabella grape juices from the tropical semi-arid climate produced in Brazil on March and September, 2010. Total phenolics and anthocyanins were determined, as well as the antioxidant capacity by DPPH, FRAP and hydrophilic ORAC methods. Test T was used to compare statistical difference at 5% of significance level. As expected, the results showed that the season can play a significant role on phenolics content and antioxidant power. Polyphenols content in juices varied from 82.9 ± 0.92 to 102.2± 1.59 mg GAE 100 mL1- and anthocyanins content ranged from 44.3 ± 2.01 to 129.5 ± 2.82 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside 100 mL-1. Regression analyses showed a high correlation of antioxidant capacity and anthocyanins content. Grapes from Sao Francisco River Valley demonstrated to be a good source of antioxidant for human diet.
