Statins, 3-hydroxy-3 methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase enzyme inhibitors, are lipid-lowering drugs, of.en used in the treatment of.cardiovascular diseases (hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis). It has been shown that statins have antiinf.ammatory ef.ects independent of.their lipid-lowering ef.ects and these anti-inf.ammatory ef.ects inhibit the inf.ammation and pain process. This study evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inf.ammatory ef.ects of.rosuvastatin using the acetic acid writhing, the f.rmalin hind paw, the orof.cial f.rmalin and the hot plate tests. The f.llowing experimental group were used: control, acute (1 day) and chronic (3 days) af.er oral gavage with rosuvastatin (3, 10, 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg). Rosuvastatin produced a dose-dependent antinociception, with dif.erent potency, in all the tests. Additionally, nitric oxide synthase inhibitors (Abbreviationsand aminoguanidine) were used to assess the nitric oxide participation on this induced rosuvastatin antinociception. The data demonstrated the antinociceptive and anti-inf.ammatory activity of.rosuvastatin in algesiometer models of.tonic or phasic pain. These activities seem to be induced by modulation of.iNOS expression, a result that may be relevant in the pharmacological treatment of.human pain where rosuvastatin and nitric oxide synthase inhibitors must be used.

Using microscopic video data measures f.r driver behavior analysis during adverse winter weather:opportunities and challenges

This paper presents a driver behavior analysis using microscopic video data measures including vehicle speed, lane-changing ratio, and time to collision. An analytical f.amework was developed to evaluate the ef.ect of.adverse winter weather conditions on highway driving behavior based on automated （computer） and manual methods. The research was conducted through two case studies. The f.rst case study was conducted to evaluate the f.asibility of.applying an au- tomated approach to extracting driver behavior data based on 15 video recordings obtained in the winter 2013 at three dif. f.rent locations on the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, Canada. A comparison was made between the automated approach and manual approach, and issues in collecting data using the automated approach under winter conditions were identif.ed. The second case study was based on high quality data collected in the winter 2014, at a location on Highway 25 in Montreal, Canada. The results demonstrate the ef.ectiveness of.the automated analytical f.amework in analyzing driver behavior, as well as evaluating the impact of.adverse winter weather conditions on driver behavior. This approach could be applied to evaluate winter maintenance strategies and crash risk on highways during adverse winter weather conditions.

While wing f.rm is known to dif.er between males and f.males of.the genus Culicoides,detailed studies of.sexual dimorphism are *** this study,we analyze sex-specif.c dif.erences in the wing f.rm of.5 species of.the subgenus Avaritia,using geometric morphometrics and comparative phylogenetic *** results conf.rm the existence of.marked sexual dimorphism in the wing f.rm of.the studied species and reveal f.r the f.rst time that while there is a shared general pattern of.sexual shape dimorphism within the subgenus,sexual size dimorphism,and particular f.atures of.sexual shape dimorphism dif.er among *** shape dimorphism was f.und to be poorly associated to size and the evolutionary history of.the *** tight association of.sexual shape dimorphism with aspect ratio suggests that the shape of.the wing is optimized f.r the type of.f.ight of.each sex,that is,dispersal f.ight in f.males versus aerobatic f.ight in ***,the f.ct that interspecif.c shape dif.erences are greater and more strongly associated to aspect ratio in males than in f.males might be indicating that in males the selective pressures af.ecting f.ight perf.rmance characteristics are more heterogeneous and/or stronger than in f.males among the studied species.

Chlamydia trachomatis and sperm lipid peroxidation in inf.rtile men

Aim: To relate the presence of.anti-Chlamydial trachomatis IgA in semen with sperm lipid membrane peroxidation and changes in seminal parameters. Methods: Semen samples of.the male partners of.52 couples assessed f.r undiagnosed inf.rtility were examined f.r the presence of.IgA antibody against C. trachomatis. The level of.sperm membrane lipid peroxidation was estimated by determining the malondialdehyde (MDA) f.rmation. Results: Sperm membrane of.inf.rtile males with positive IgA antibodies against C. trachomatis showed a higher level of.lipid peroxidation than that of.inf.rtile males with negative IgA antibody (Pf.C. trachomatis antibody and the magnitude of.sperm membrane lipid peroxidation. All the other tested semen parameters were f.und to be similar in the two groups. Conclusion: The activation of.immune system by C. trachomatis may promote lipid peroxidation of.the sperm membrane. This could be the way by which C. trachomatis af.ects f.rtility.

Trypanosoma cruzi,the causative agent of.Chagas disease, interacts with molecules in the midgut of.its insect vector to multiply and reach the inf.ctive stage. Many studies suggest that the parasite binds to midgut-specif.c glycans. We identif.ed several glycoproteins expressed in the intestine and perimicrovillar membrane (PMM) of.Triatoma (Meccus) pallidipennis under dif.erent f.eding conditions. In order to assess changes in protein-linked glycans, we perf.rmed lectin and immunoblot analyses on glycoprotein extracts f.om these intestinal tissues using well-characterized lectins, and an antibody, which collectively recognize a wide range of.dif.erent glycans epitopes. We observed that the amount and composition of.proteins and glycoproteins associated with dif.erent glycans structures changed over time in the intestines and PMM under dif.erent physiological conditions. PMM extracts contained a wide variety of.glycoproteins with dif.erent sugar residues, including abundant high-mannose and complex sialylated glycans. We propose that these molecules could be involved in the process of.parasite-vector interactions.

Bendable tube-shaped supercapacitor based on reduced graphene oxide and Prussian blue coated carbon f.ber yarns f.r energy storage

Carbon f.ber yarns（Cf.） are promising as a new type of.f.exible building blocks f.r the construction of.f.exible architectures f.r the energy storage applications. The main hurdle with Cf. is how to make them high energy and power capable by using economically and environmentally viable materials. Here,we report reduced graphene oxide（r GO） and Prussian blue（PB） coated Cf., derived f.om a f.cile electrochemical process at room temperature f.r supercapacitor electrodes. The PB coated Cf. and r GO coated Cf. electrodes exhibit the excellent gravimetric capacitance of.339 f.g and 160.2 f.g, respectively, in aqueous KCl electrolyte in three-electrode cell conf.guration. When we coupled these electrodes inside the f.exible plastic tube and separated by the electrolyte wet f.lter paper in order to construct f.exible architecture, the resulting device delivers excellent specif.c energy of.52.1 Wh/kg and 26.5 Wh/kg with of.ering specif.c power of.3100 W/kg and 14400 W/kg respectively, under a wide operating potential of..8 V with excellent rate capability. The device shows high tolerance towards bending, and retained its ef.iciency to the capacitance af.er being bent at an angle of.360° f.r 200 bending cycles.

Negative biomarker-based male f.rtility evaluation： sperm phenotypes associated with molecular-level anomalies

Biomarker-based sperm analysis elevates the treatment of.human inf.rtility and ameliorates reproductive perf.rmance in livestock. The negative biomarker-based approach f.cuses on proteins and ligands unique to def.ctive spermatozoa, regardless of.their morphological phenotype, lending itself.to analysis by f.ow cytometry （f.）. A prime example is the spermatid specif.c thioredoxin SPTRX3/TXNDC8, retained in the nuclear vacuoles and superf.uous cytoplasm of.def.ctive human spermatozoa. Inf.rtile couples with high semen SPTRX3 are less likely to conceive by assisted reproductive therapies （ART） and more prone to recurrent miscarriage while low SPTRX3 has been associated with multiple ART births. Ubiquitin, a small, proteolysis-promoting covalent posttranslational protein modif.er is f.und on the surf.ce of.def.ctive posttesticular spermatozoa and in the damaged protein aggregates, the aggresomes of.spermiogenic origin. Semen ubiquitin content correlates negatively with f.rtility and conventional semen parameters, and with sperm binding of.lectins LCA （Lens culinaris agglutinin; reveals altered sperm surf.ce） and PNA （Arachis hypogaealpeanut agglutinin; reveals acrosomal malf.rmation or damage）. The Postacrosomal Sheath WWl Domain Binding Protein （PAWP）, implicated in oocyte activation during f.rtilization, is ectopic or absent f.om def.ctive human and animal spermatozoa. Consequently, f.-parameters of.PAWP correlate with ART outcomes in inf.rtile couples and with f.rtility in bulls. Assays based on the above biomarkers have been combined into multiplex f. semen screening protocols, and the surf.ce expression of.lectins and ubiquitin has been utilized to develop nanoparticle-based bull semen purif.cation method validated by f.eld artif.cial insemination trials. These advances go hand-in-hand with the innovation of.f.-technology and genomics/proteomics-based biomarker discovery.

Actinic Cheilitis: Clinical Characteristics Observed in 75 Patients and a Summary of.the Literature of.This Of.en Neglected Premalignant Disorder

Actinic cheilitis can progress to squamous cell carcinoma in 20% of.cases. The purpose of.this study was to identif. the clinical characteristics of.75 patients with actinic cheilitis and to summarise the current literature concerning actinic cheilitis. A total of.75 patients were evaluated over a 3-year period. The medical history, physical examination results and images were collected f.om each patient. Demographic data were collected and analysed. To review the literature, the relevant data were collected f.om scientif.c journals in the last 30 years. The mean age of.the patients was 56 years old;42 patients (56%) were f.male, and 66 patients (88%) were white. Nineteen (25.3%) patients reported at least one symptom, including pain, burning and itching. Sixty-f.ve (86.7%) patients presented actinic cheilitis only in the lower lip. All of.the patients reported sun exposure, and 44 (58.6%) patients were exposed f.r more than 10 years. The main clinical aspects investigated and analysed included dryness (100%), f.aking (72%) and white lesions (57.3%). Lip assessment is extremely important in medical and dental care. f.om the 15 lesions assessed in the presence of.actinic cheilitis, the most common clinical characteristics observed were dryness, f.aking and white lesions. It is imperative to know the clinical aspects that may be encountered in actinic cheilitis in order to achieve early diagnosis, thus avoiding lip squamous cell carcinoma transf.rmation.
