The volatile cons.ituents.of the es.ential oils.from leaves.from the weed plants.Parthenium hys.erophorus.and Ambros.a polys.achya were identified and quantified by GLC-Ms.and GLC. Allelopathic activities.were determined by methods.that evaluated the volatile effects.and the direct application of thes. es.ential oils.on the s.ed germination and s.edling vigor of lettuce. We identified 27 compounds.in the es.ential oil from P. hys.erophorus. and the main cons.ituents.were germacrene-D (35.9%), trans.β-ocimene (8.5%) and β-myrcene (7.6%). In the es.ential oil from A. polys.achya, 40 cons.ituents.were identified and the principal compounds.were germacrene-D (29.3%), trans.β-ocimene (13.6%) and β-caryophyllene (9.8%). In both methods. the es.ential oil from A. polys.achya pres.nted a greater potential for reducing s.ed germination and s.edling vigor in lettuce than the es.ential oil from P. hys.erophorus. and this.activity might be attributed to its.higher content of monoterpenes.

This.work des.ribes.the chemical compos.tion of the es.ential oils.extracted from fres. leaves.of Lippia origanoides.Kunth. and Mentha s.icata L. and their antioxidant and ins.cticidal activities. The es.ential oils.were extracted by s.eam dis.illation us.ng a modified Clevenger apparatus.and s.bs.quently analyzed by gas.chromatography-flame ionization detector and gas.chromatography-mas. s.ectrometry. The antioxidant activities.were determined by the β-carotene-linoleic acid method and by s.ques.ration of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hidrazila radical. The concentrations.of the es.ential oils.and the s.nthetic s.andard, butylated hydroxyltoluene, were 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 500 μg mL-1. Ins.cticidal activity was.analyzed by non-preference with choice and no choice agains. the aphid Myzus.pers.cae s.lzer. Gas.chromatography analys.s.of the es.ential oil from Lippia origanoides.Kunth. revealed carvacrol (41.51%), p-cymene (18.36%), γ-terpinene (17.03%) and thymol (4.86%) as.major cons.ituents. and the es.ential oil from Mentha s.icata L. contained piperitona (81.18%), piperitenone (14.57%) and limonene (1.47%) as.the principal components. The es.ential oils.and the s.andard exhibited dos.-dependent antioxidant activities.at the concentrations.tes.ed. The es.ential oils.were s.own to be potential agents.in the integrated management of the aphid Myzus.pers.cae s.lzer.
